charli XcXShe has been on our Radar for a while Charli XCX is a teenager from Hertfordshire who writes her own songs and sings them in a brazenly mockney-fied Home Counties accent– she's a pubescent MIA, the computer-pop Kate Nash, Lily Allen lost in space, the female Frankmusik, the Fisher Price Fischerspooner and Lykke Li's grimy young British cousin.

Editorial

Welcome to spring Remixed, re-issued, borrowed, copied the best artists are the ones who steal ideas and remarry them together into original new forms innovating as they go. Here at the Institute we’re not precious and tend to shed our skin like a snake with the coming of different seasons.

Spring is on the horizon and Summers Blossom is in the air, we have 3 bank holidays coming up and here’s a top tip if you take off the four days after Easter you get 11 days off work. Our much anticpated Avant Garden Pop-Up Dance Venue kicks off at the end of April for 6 whole weeks (see p8-9) , The Art-Car-Bootique at Chapter Sunday 17th April (see p6 ) and we start taking submissions for our Summer Piss Artists exhibition. Check out our website cardiffartsinstitute.org and meet our new in-house presenter Holly who’ll be interviewing bands and people on our new YouTube TV show. This is your venue, if you’ve got any ideas and we can help make them happen, get in touch and get involved.

Artist Prolfie

Who is Pure Evil?

To truly understand Pure Evil it is useful to know that he is a descendant of the late Sir Thomas More, the Lord Chancellor who wrote the controversial work Utopia and who was later beheaded by King Henry VIII.

It seems only natural then, that Pure Evil should explore the darker side of the wreckage of Utopian dreams and the myth of the Apocalypse, a belief in the life-changing event that brings his-tory with all its conflicts to an end.

In 1990 PURE EVIL left the Poll Tax Ri-ots of London behind and went to live in California where he spent 10 years ingesting weapons grade psychedelics, thinking about stuff , making electronic music and printing t-shirts .

Inspired by skateboard culture and the west coast character graffiti of Twist, he returned to London and picked up a spraycan and started painting weird fanged vampire bunnies everywhere.

Pure Evils ancestry is alleged to in-clude eight saints: Vladimir the Great, Saint Anna of Russia, the Holy Martyrs Boris and Gleb, Saint Stephen of Hun-gary, Saint Margaret of Scotland and Saint Mathilde together with Saint Tho-mas More, Humbert III of Savoy and several European royal families.

He also claims to be descended from the Old English Chieftain Ailric, Kings Thane to Edward the Confessor, who held Cawthorne and much of South Yorkshire before the Conquest.

SWN Column

so. sWn?

Some people guessed it might be 'South Wales Noise'. If only we'd been that clever eh?

In reality SWN is pronounced 'soon' and is Welsh for 'sound'. I thought I'd clear up the pronunciation first, other-wise you might keep reading this col-umn and wondering what SWN stood for.

For those of you who don't know us, we began as a three day festival around a whole host of Cardiff venues in the autumn of 2007. As we approach our fifth festival this October (Oct 20-22nd if you'd like to put it in your diaries) we've grown a little as both a festival and as promoters of music. We bring concerts into Wales - mostly into our hometown of Cardiff, but sometimes around Wales - and we also help curate at other peoples' festivals - like Cam-

den Crawl, Stag & Dagger, In The City and HowTheLightGetsIn - where we usually take (mostly) Welsh bands out to play to new audiences.

The shows we do in Cardiff vary in size - from lovely small venues like the Norwegian Church, to the hip town centre spaces of Cardiff Arts Institute, Clwb Ifor Bach and Buffalo Bar - up to bigger events in the Students Union and Millennium Music Hall.

We like lots of different music, so the shows can be quite varied, but you might find a thread through upcoming shows from Cold Cave, Warpaint, Dar-win Deez, Three Trapped Tigers and James Vincent McMorrow, to name a few.

Thanks to CAI we'll have this new regular column - not just to plug our shows - but to share with you the new music that we - like them - love. That's our intro over. Nice to meet you. See you next time.

Call For Submissions

Piss artists

The Institute puts out a call for local artists flush with creativity...

People say that most Art is a crock of shit and completely up it’s own arse. Some of the most profound artistic statements I have ever come across have been while sitting in the toilet and admiring someone's biro on wall. Usu-ally this toilet poetry sits alongside the classic marker pen giant knob and the glory hole phone number.

Toilet art is a long celebrated tradition and during the month of June, Cardiff Arts Institute is inviting selected artists to take over its toilet cubicles. For two months these cubical installations will provide a backdrop to those private inti-mate moments of thought - the perfect time to soak up some culture. Urban Outfitters are taking over the larger toi-let at the top of the stairs and turning it into something very special. If the idea of this exhibition has got you thinking of a shit idea - it’s probably great for the piss-artists exhibition.

We will commission eight of the best ideas and make them a reality with the exhibition opening in the 1st week of June which will be the only time you’ll really want to hang out in the toilets.

Please send your cubicle exhibition/installation ideas and any proposed imagery direct to

[email protected]

Submissions close: Sunday 1st May

Music Geek MonthlyHave you ever wondered why

there are no music groups that are like reading groups? Me too! As a result, every month Music Geek Monthly will be exactly that. Each month, new album re-leases will be reviewed in a 'hit, miss or maybe style'. There will also be a chance to preview any upcoming gigs. Then, between each group meeting, members will listen to 2 albums, 1 band spanking new and 1 genuine classic, to be discussed at the next meeting. Just like a book group.

ach month a different person will choose the albums. You might just find some musical gems that you didn't know exist-ed. If this sounds like your kind of thing, come along to Music Geek Monthly.

1992 Fashion

Green Flash Trainers? You cannot be serious

‘A Fashion dealer called Trevour Norris started selling loads of old school train-ers. Where did he get them? He found them in mental hospitals in america’

How to spot house fashion: rule of thumb - if they’re dressed like five year olds, they had an E once. Either that or they’re real five yearolds. The E-driven retrogression to childhood meant that anything an infant was forced into in 1975 is desirable street wear now. Courduroy trousers, retro trainers and big-brother sized jeans, with a record bag instead of a satchel. At the height of rave some wretched creatures were tearing around with dummies in their mouths. Rumour has it was to stop them sucking their thumbs.

Blame E, but everyone was feeling like a kid again it did horrible things to fashion. Pigtails, romper suits, le-sly Judd pinafore dresses... Old school

trainers harked back to non-existent halcyon days where life was all space-hoppers and noggin The Nog. If we re-ally went back to our childhood we’d be wearing round pants that came up to our navels with a thumb in our mouths and a finger up our nostril. Life wasn’t a perpetual summer rollerdisco where our parents grooved with Sly and the Family Stone; it rained a lot and big kids were liable to wee in our plimsol bags.

The revival of Green trainers was a sign that things had gone too far. Like nylon shirts, the Generation Game and easy listening records, they were shit then and they’re still shit now. Style aside, old school trainers have wafer-thin soles and eventually you will end up walking like Jamiroquai, only forever.

1992 Style Blunders:

Goatees: testicle chins abound. High heelend calf-lenght motor-

bike boots: Christ! Liza Minelli chokers: Sausage

necks everywhere.

@cardiffarts: Okay, let's kick this off Bruce Forsyth style, what's your name and where are you from?

@PeteLawrie: My name is Pete and I'm from Cardiff Wales, via Liverpool and a touch of Scottish

@cardiffarts: give us you brief musi-cal history

@PeteLawrie: born to musician par-ents. Bought a trumpet at tender ten years old. Parents Played Paul Simon and Nina Simone. Fell in love

@cardiffarts: So was the trumpet al-ways going to be your musical calling? When did you discover your other talents?

@PeteLawrie: at about 15 I started skateboarding, through that I found Hip Hop and Ska Punk. Started getting as much as I could into my ears

@cardiffarts What about your latest musical direction?

@PeteLawrie: I was a rubbish skateboarder. I got to the music I make now by discovering Dylan, Bon Iver and Ryan Adams.

@PeteLawrie: I've hit a good patch of writing of late, it's back to the hip hop influence, but with songs on top.

@cardiffarts: Is that your River Kids 'Hip-hop covers' project, or all new material?

@PeteLawrie: All new material. The River Kids project got me back into that world and mindset, production style. I have dusted off my sampler!

@PeteLawrie: I really enjoy the proc-ess of manipulating an old sound. The crackle from the vinyl. You can't recreate that sound, that warmth

@cardiffarts: Would you prefer if your new album was released exclusively on vinyl?

@PeteLawrie: and cassette! I'll have

to try and shift a few downloads first, or whatever it is the kids do nowadays. I miss tapes.

@cardiffarts: RT@PeteLawrie One of the benefits of twitter is that I am mid interview, whilst also buying bread from the deli in my slippers

@cardiffarts: Speaking of the album, we'd better give it a plug! What's it called, when's it out and who's releasing it?

@PeteLawrie: it's called A Little Brighter, it's out on May 4th and will be released by the lovely people at Island Records

@cardiffarts: And you're coming to launch it with us over here right? Can't beat live experience, as this twitter interview proves. Bread & Slip-pers aside that is :)

@PeteLawrie: Indeed. We cannae wait for that show. Nice to come home once in a while

@cardiffarts: Ah yes 'we', can't forgot your marvelous band, give us a small fact about each.

@PeteLawrie: there is @shanklemail bass and hair master. Great hairline. There is @elliotsworld on drums, he likes inter-pretative dance

@PeteLawrie: @shanklemail has a hairline so impressive infact, that it has now got its own twitter ac-count @quiff_alicious.

@cardiffarts: Lastly can you tweet us one of your vids you feel is most defini-tive.

@PeteLawrie: Here is one with all of us (Mike Hair included) http://bit.ly/co9ztj It's about Cardiff to some degree

@cardiffarts: Which brings us rather fittingly to the end, nice one for tweeting to us Pete!

@PeteLawrie: no worries. See you soon CAI.

catapult recordsDarkhouse Family// CRST Stabwound// Redeye (Catapult Records)The top spot has to go to the first release on own label from the Darkhouse Family and CRST. Darkhouse Family rule the A side with Stabwound: a much more frenetic stretch than their previous releases, but still retains the duos redeyed drum patterns and future boogie synth lines. CRST on the flip offer a slice of chrome coated tribal garage, this is a nasty dance floor beast.

Julio Bashmore Batty Knee Dance (3024)

This may be Julio Bashmore’s finest moment to date and its fair to say he’s had some pretty fine moments. Batty Knee Dance really is a glorious piece of emotive dance music, before you give it a listen just remember that it is okay to cry maybe not in public mind you. This record is fucking immense.

Fudge Fingas Now About How (Prime Numbers)It’s fair to say that Prime Numbers is one of those labels that grabbed our attention right from the start and have continued to holdn it with each new release. Now About How from Edinburgh’s Fudge Fingas displays all the multi-dimensional influences this label excel in, across two plates of sweet-sweet house music.

Burial Street Halo (Hyperdub)

‘Street Halo’ follows the hyperbole of Burial's col-laboration with Four Tet and Thom Yorke - Ego. In our opinion, ‘Street Halo’ and the accompanying B sides ‘NYC’ and ’Stolen Dog’ are sheer brilliance. They display all the low slung excellence we experienced on his ‘Untrue’ album with hallmark androgynous yearning vocals and his muted post club 4AM spectral rhythms. We hope we don’t have to wait another 4 years for more solo work from this incredible producer.

Kassem Mosse Workshop 12 (Workshop)No one does deep and arresting house music better than Kassem Mosse and Kassem Mosse doesn’t do deep arresting house music better than when he releases on Workshop. This is a tough and raw chugger of deep space house music. He does all the simply things right, raw drum patterns, infectious grooves and sensual vocals, that’s pretty much all you need in our opinion.

Higher Learning

Metabeats & Mudmowth Sledgehammer KissesTwo of Wales’ finest combine for a seriously strong EP. Another string in the bow for the Associated Minds label, proving them to be one of the UK’s top independent Hip-hop labels. Metabeats is possibly the city’s best all round producer and Swansea boy Mudmowth is now based in Indone-sia but continues to make waves over here.

Tyler The Creator YonkersXL get their hands on an album (Goblin) from the unofficial head of Hip-hop’s most hyped crew since Wu Tang Clan, ‘Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’. This is the incredible yet slightly disturb-ing first single.

Action Johnson Barry HorowitzAn ode to the 80’s WWF underdog wrestler, from the Ginger bearded, Polo wearing Queens rapper with a classic New York sound, kinda like an early Fat Joe meets Ghostface Killah. From his debut album Dr Lecter which is fast gaining him a solid reputation on the underground.

Astroid Boys Roundabout

With a sound that mixes up classic Hip-hop with Dubstep and Grime, these fellas are definitely leading a new school of Welsh rhymers and have been tearing up live shows. This is the B Side to their long awaited ‘Welcome To The Zoo’ single, which is backed up by a killer video.

Louis Boston SmileThe first single from his Money Making Brothers mixtape alongside Killer Tomato, on a smoother tip than the rest of this selection as Louis lament love lost. Check online for a free copy and a great video.

DJ Jaffa

Kleeer Intimate Connection Despite seeming like this track is way ahead of it’s time, this 1984 slice of laid back Boogie is not actually talking about an ‘internet connection’. It is a great tune however.

Loose Ends Gonna Make You MineActually the B Side of their single ‘Stay a Little While, Child’ but definitely the funkier. Undoubt-edly one of the best British Soul groups of all time.

Gwen Guthrie 7th Heaven

This classic 4th & Broadway 1983 Boogie release was actually produced by Reggae dons, Sly and Robbie and featured a remix from US Garage legend Larry Levan on the flipside.

BB+ Q DreamerFrom the ‘Brooklyn, Bronx & Queens Band’s’ last album ‘Genie’ which came out in 1985. It’s impos-sible not to smile when this tune comes on, it’s total summer.

Caprice 100%Produced by Leroy Burgess and released in 1985 on the Aleem Twins’ ‘NIA’ label. Great tune.

The Raveonettes Recharge And RevoltWith a new album 'Raven in the Grave' out soon, Raveonettes return typically drifting between sweet surfer-rock and dark shoegaze.

XXXY Ordinary ThingsMixing up House, Techno and Garage into a driv-ing anthemic bass music beauty. This Manchester producer is undoubtedly one to watch, especially going into the summer.

Yuck Get AwayYoung London 4 piece trading slacker-pop. Lots of layering guitars with noise and rich ringing tones.

PJ Harvey The Last Living Rose :

Central sounding guitars, wreathed in echo -as if they're playing somewhere in the middle distance. Scattered muzzy electric piano, smears of brass, off-kilter samples and musical quotations.Wonderful.

Stagga Wild For The NightThe Welsh Dubstep champion’s 2nd single for Starkey’s Slit Jockey label, takes in all his trade-mark twisted futuristic sounds, a Wu Tang sample and more than a hint of Juke. Look out for the album dropping on Rag & Bone.

the Music Geeks

The Cave Singers Black Leaf

Taken from the Music Geek new release album of the month. Folky/indie/bluesy brilliance.

Wagon Christ Manalyze this!A big hit at the last meeting. Hip-hop infused elec-tronica from Luke Vibert AKA Wagon Christ.

Braids LemonadeFrom my album of the year so far. Beautifully layered experimental indie. Vocal shades of Bjork on some tracks.

Great vocal sample at the starts the speeds off into catchy danceable electro pop.
