A very warm welcome to the July 2017 issue of ‘I’ll be there’ - the first of three newsletters for the 2017/18 campaign.

I am sure that, like me, you are looking forward to the season following the summer break - possibly more this year than last, as we did not have the European Championships to fill the gap!

From a personal view point I feel far more optimistic about our chances at the moment. Last season the managerial appointment of Paul Trollope was at best a gamble. This year Neil Warnock will be in post from game one and had a significant part of last season to assess the players he was given to work with. More importantly, he has had the benefit of a full pre-season run in with the squad. Hopefully this will have enabled him to get players to the necessary fitness levels and allowed time to bring in the players needed to fill the gaps and improve quality in specific areas.

Pre-season preparation has gone well, with six first team fixtures played during this period. To date we have recorded victories against Taff’s Well, Tavistock, Bodmin Town, Plymouth Argyle and Livingston, with our only defeat coming away at Shrewsbury Town.

The game at Taff’s Well was in aid of Velindre and Cancer Research Wales, worthy charities that undertake fantastic work. The game drew an excellent crowd who provided support for the team vocally and donations for the charity by putting their hands in their pockets – a good night all round. Neil then took the squad to the West Country for a week and I am sure that the smaller clubs we played during that period were extremely grateful to both him and Cardiff City for

supporting them. Hopefully the games generated adequate interest to benefit the clubs financially.

It was nice to see an old Bluebird in Neil Alexander at CCS for the Livingston friendly and I am happy to report that he had not forgotten how to do the Ayatollah – his Ninian Park training was not wasted!

Although the pre-season friendlies - whether played locally or abroad – are enjoyable, you cannot read too much into the results. For me it’s about fitness and using the games to get the right starting line-up for the first competitive match. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see goals and positive results – wins against teams at any level generates confidence. But the first real test will be away to Burton Albion on 5th August. The Brewers are fancied to finish bottom of the Championship so they will have a point to prove. We lost at the Pirelli Stadium last season and this defeat heralded the end of our previous manager. Let’s hope the game on the 5th will be the start of something memorable for our current one. We really need a positive start to the season, we certainly don’t want to be find ourselves in the position we were last year having to play catch up.

On a positive note Neil Warnock has managed to retain those players he felt were key to success. As well as this, he has brought in seven new additions to the squad. Players brought in during the close season include goalkeepers Lee Camp and Neil Etheridge, Callum Paterson, Loic Damour, Nathanial Mendez-Laing, Lee Tomlin and Danny Ward. I am sure you would all like to welcome them to Cardiff City and hope that their time with us playing in the blue shirt will be both enjoyable and successful.

4 The CCSC Newsletter - August 2017I’ll be there

It would be amiss of me not to mention one of the players who left the club during the summer - Peter Whittingham. ‘Whitts’ joined the Bluebirds from Aston Villa in January 2007 and made 459 appearances for the City. He has entertained City fans for the last ten years, scoring some fantastic goals and helping us to reach both FA and League Cup Finals. Whitts has been a fantastic servant to the club and we wish him well in his time at Blackburn Rovers. So sadly, no more will we hear the famous lines ‘He does what he wants! He does what he wants! He’s Peter Whittingham! He does what he wants!’ And it’s fair to say that he did it very well and I am sure he will continue to do so – except against us please, Peter, should you return to the CCS!

On the merchandise front, we still have a limited number of badges from the Euro 2016 tournament available - including match badges for the last 3 games of the tournament against Northern Ireland, Belgium and Portugal. Also available are a limited supply of match badges for the current World Cup campaign plus a wide range of CCFC badges. Wales’ badges are priced at £3.00 and CCFC and CCSC badges at £2.50 - these can be purchased from the Supporters’ Club shop on match days.

CCSC away travel to Welsh fixtures for the World Cup campaign will resume with the away game against Moldova in September, with Georgia the following month.

Anyone interested in information on Wales away travel should call into the Supporters Club shop on match days or view the Wales travel page on our website for details.

Just a reminder to everyone - the Supporters Club will be selling match day programmes from both the CCSC shop and immediately outside the shop. We also have Cardiff City scarves and bobble hats and Wales scarves available all very reasonably priced.

Also, don’t forget to call into the shop to join or renew your CCSC membership.

Paul Randall and Paul Corkrey have decided to stand down from the committee for the forthcoming season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for the time and effort they have committed to the Supporters Club over the time they have been involved.

So, enjoy the remainder of this newsletter and the season ahead and thank you once again for your continued support.

Come on you Bluebirds!

All the best Clive

PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2016-17

The Awards dinner at the end of last season was a great night for all and the players and management of Cardiff City helped us finish last season on a high. The Player of the Year award went to Aron Gunnarsson and the Young Player award to Kenneth Zohore. A special award was presented to Peter Whittingham in recognition of 10 years’ at the Club and we wish him well for the future.

After a summer of speculation in the press regarding the future of Sean Morrison, Neil re-instated Sean as skipper for the new season and he has signed a new 3-year contract.

I recently spoke to Sean about his first three years with the Bluebirds as he looks forward to the challenges of the new season.

“It was good to have a break at the end of last season but after a few weeks, I am ready to get back and start working towards the new season.”

Having been signed by Ole in August 2014, who left the Club only a few weeks later, Sean has been a regular in the starting line up for the past 3 topsy-turvy post-Premiership years but has noticed a major positive change in the Club since Neil Warnock arrived.

“There has been no continuity at the club on or off the pitch over the past few years and it has shown on times in our performances. The fans play a big part in that and you know in the first 10 minutes if the fans are with you or not.

“Since the new gaffer came in and from the middle of last season, there is a togetherness about the whole Club and you sense that the fans are with us, especially over the last few months of last season. It is our job to continue that into the new campaign.”

A summer of stability has led to signing new players early and they have settled into the squad.

“Neil has not only signed good players, but great characters who fit into the dynamic of the team and it is important to keep that going.

Competition for places along the back line?

“Definitely. We have some great players at the Club and it is important to keep playing well. I’m pleased that we managed to keep Bruno and with Sol, Connors and Pelts around, I know I’ve got to perform but I love that competition as it brings out the best in me.”

SEAN MORRISON INTERVIEW

A product of Plymouth youth before playing for Swindon, Huddersfield and Reading, was it good to go back to your old Club for the recent friendly?

“I am Plymouth born, a Plymouth fan and was a season ticket holder in my early teens. My parents live about a mile from the ground and it’s great that they got promoted last season. Matty Kennedy had a great time there and has come back in good form during the pre-season games.

Sheffield Wednesday – press talk or a real offer?

“Yes, they came in with an offer and I sat down with Neil, who just asked me where my head was at. I told him I was settled and happy to stay as I could see that the Club was moving in the

right direction. The gaffer is a straight, honest talker and motivator and I love that. I’ve signed a new contract and am looking forward to the new season with a great deal of optimism.

“We all know that there are a lot of good teams in the Championship and how competitive it can be. It is important to get off to a good start and not be playing catch up like we did last year but the squad is in good shape to take on the challenges of the new season.”

“ We have the best team spirit since I’ve been at the Club and I’ll be looking to better my previous best season of scoring (7) in the season ahead.”

Thanks Sean and good luck to you and the whole squad for the coming season – let the fun begin!

The shop stocks a wide range of programmes from Cardiff City past games but also Wales fixtures and other games.

You can browse through the in-shop selection or ask Clive if he can source that ‘missing programme’ from a past game. If Clive can’t help, we don’t think anyone can.

2017/2018 A NEW SEASON

NEW SEASON, NEW PLAYERS

Neil Etheridge (27) – GoalkeeperBorn in London, Neil has played over 50 times for the Philippines, qualifying through his mother. A youth player at Chelsea and Fulham, a lot of his career has been spent on loan until the last two seasons as the number one keeper at Walsall.

Lee Camp (32) – GoalkeeperHaving played against the Bluebirds on many occasions over his career, Lee has notched up over 450 games, mainly for Derby County, QPR, Nottingham Forest and latterly at Rotherham, where he played under Neil Warnock at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Following a string of great results towards the end of last season, the focus for all the players, management and fans is fully on the new campaign, with a renewed optimism for better times ahead as Neil Warnock aims for a record breaking promotion campaign.

The stability of retaining a settled management team under Neil means there has been the opportunity to review the current squad and identify the key areas for improvement for the new campaign.

Unfortunately, it means losing some players and it will seem especially strange to watch the Bluebirds without our familiar number 7 for the past 10 years, namely Peter Whittingham. We wish him well at Blackburn Rovers and thank him for the memories of those years and that sweet left foot.

However, planning the coming season from the position of stability has resulted in a range of new signings early in the transfer window and at the time of printing, there is still over a month to go until the end of the transfer window.

2017/2018 A NEW SEASON

Loic Damour (26) – MidfielderHaving represented France at all levels up to U-20, Loic has spent much of his career to date in the French and Belgian second tier for various clubs including Strasbourg, Boulogne and two seasons at Bourg-en-Bresse. Good reviews during the pre-season will ensure competition for places in midfield this season.

Callum Paterson (22) – Right backAveraging a goal every 4 games, Callum is an attacking full back, who has also played in central defence, midfield or as a striker when required. Formerly with Hearts, where he let his contract expire, the Scottish international likes to get forward at every opportunity and should be fit to start his Bluebirds career around October.

2017/2018 A NEW SEASON

Apart from Callum Paterson and Lee Camp, who have been injured, all the players seem to have had a good runout in the friendlies and appear to be settling in well.

Add to this the re-emergence of players such as Matty Kennedy, who spent much of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, and the

squad looks very strong to tackle the demands of the forthcoming season and the push towards promotion.

We wish all the new players and the rest of the squad the best of luck for the coming season.

Lee Tomlin (28) – Striker / Attacking midfielderHaving played over 400 games and averaging a goal every 5 games, Lee has gained a reputation as a strong creative midfielder or second striker with a great shot. He has spent most of his career in the Championship, plus a brief spell in the Premiership with Bournemouth. Lee will give invaluable support to Kenneth Zohore and be a vital link between midfield and attack.

Danny Ward (26) – Left winger / ForwardNever a prolific scorer, Danny’s career has seen 2 lengthy spells at Huddersfield and Rotherham, averaging 1 goal in 10 games and 5 games at the respective clubs, plus experience of the highs and lows of the play offs. His best goal tally for a season came at Rotherham last year where he top scored with 12 goals in a struggling team that was eventually relegated.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (25) – WingerIncluding loan spells, Cardiff City is Nathaniel’s 8th club with the bulk of his previous games having been for Peterborough United, on loan and permanent deals, and at his last club, Rochdale, where he scored 15 goals in 71 games.

15The CCSC Newsletter - August 2017

After a long and gruelling season following our beloved Bluebirds, most fans decided to take a break from football for a few months and recuperate in readiness for the pre-season friendlies and the next Championship campaign - but not everyone. A die-hard band from the Supporters Club decided to commit to a short summer break in Belgrade to take in the Wales competitive fixture against Serbia.

In the early hours of Saturday 10th June about 45 committed lunatics boarded the coach that would take us to Heathrow for the early flight to Belgrade via Vienna. Following a fairly uneventful journey with the usual liquid breakfast at Heathrow and liquid lunch in Vienna, we arrived at our hotel in the Serbian capital at around 4pm. Time for an hours shut eye - well, that was the intention before the fire alarm went off! Fortunately it was false alarm!

This was my third visit to Belgrade or Beograd, the capital of Serbia, and the largest city in the country. It is a wonderful city located on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. The name translates to ‘White city’. Its location has

always meant it holds a strategic position and as a result has been battled over in 115 wars and raised to the ground 44 times. There you go, that’s the history lesson done!

One of the things I like about Eastern Europe is the climate between June and October. Generally you can guarantee great weather - usually t shirt and shorts or a light summery dress (if you’re that way inclined) is usually the right attire. The other great thing about Belgrade is the vibrant night life, with many clubs open until dawn particularly the barges spread along the banks of the Sava and Danube rivers. There are plenty of bars and restaurants spread throughout the city and the old bohemian neighbourhood is worth a visit.

After a few hours in the main square we set off on the tram and found a lovely little local bar and spent some considerable time before kick-off building relations with the locals and drinking as much of their beer as possible. Over the four days, everywhere we went we found our hosts most hospitable and friendly and extremely

welcoming – and strangely relieved that Gareth Bale was unavailable for the game through suspension!

As most football fans will be aware Belgrade is home to Serbia’s two biggest and most successful football teams - Red Star and Partizan - no love lost here! Both teams big European clubs in the past but now sadly far less influential with success outside their domestic league far more difficult to come by for both.

The game was played at Red Star’s ground the Rajko Mitic Stadium on the Sunday evening. One of our group was detained outside the ground for carrying an offensive weapon - a banana - but was sent on her way when she said she would start singing - don’t worry I won’t mention any names Karen!

In my opinion a very wise decision by the armed police and military personnel deployed to deal with characters who turn up at the turnstiles carrying bananas! Knives, flares and batons are fine but bananas, no chance, absolutely lethal!

WALES IN SERBIA

17The CCSC Newsletter - August 2017

The game was good to watch, competitive and ending in a 1-1 draw. Optimism was high following Ramsey’s successful conversion from the penalty spot, however an equaliser from Aleksander Mitrovic 15 minutes from time salvaged a point for the Serbs. In anyone’s eyes a draw in Belgrade is a good result as believe me this is not an easy place to play. Add to this that the team were without Gareth Bale and the result is even more impressive.

On Monday our adventure continued with an ‘Allyson Rees Special Tour’ on what was probably, weather wise the hottest day of the four. The trip took in The Red Star football club’s trophy room/museum, a very impressive church (I won’t go into detail about this Vince but you won’t be winning Britain’s Got Talent or the Voice any time soon), a fortress with lovely views over the rivers and finishing with a 3 hour river cruise with as much beer as you could drink.

I believe the amount of alcohol consumed in those three hours put the company into receivership. After an hour of trying (and failing)

to educate the group plus a dodgy mic, the guide gave up, put the mic down and joined us on the beer! She did say we were the funniest and nicest group she had dealt with for quite some time. Thanks Allyson - you did us proud!

The group arrived back in Cardiff on the Tuesday evening, having had, as always, a great time. Each time I visit Belgrade it makes me want to return, it’s a great city full of history, culture, bars and restaurants. So if you get the chance to visit take the opportunity and if it happens to coincide with a football match even better.

A win against Austria in Cardiff is now critical if we are looking to retain any chance of qualification for the World Cup tournament in Russia. Then come two tough away games against Moldova and Georgia before finishing the tournament at home in Cardiff against the Republic. It will be tough but who knows. Still whatever the result against Austria, we will still be there in Moldova and Georgia cheering the team on.
