Our program is nationally accredited through The Council on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) in both the Invasive (Cardiac Catheterization) and Noninvasive (Adult Echocardiography) cardiology concentrations. Graduates of the CPCC Cardiovascular Technology Program are eligible to take the cardiovascular technology registry prior to or immediately upon graduation through Cardiovascular Credentialing International or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Nationally, Cardiovascular Technology is a rapidly advancing specialty in high demand. Within a very technically-focused and satisfying scope of practice, Cardiovascular Technologists are in demand across the nation with the future employment outlook being very good. The median income for professionals in the field is $58,000 per year according to the US Department of Labor. Higher income is possible through "on-call" hours (remaining available to work overnight or on weekends). Non Invasive A cardiac sonographer/echocardiographer is a healthcare professional who uses ultrasound of the heart to assess cardiovascular anatomy and associated disease abnormalities. Echocardiographers performs 2-D and/or 3-D echocardiograms with advanced Doppler quantitative calculations utilizing specialized high-tech imaging equipment to acquire detailed information to evaluate the heart structure, function and size, blood flow patterns and valvular issues. They also assist with stress echocardiography, and cardiovascular intra-operative transesophageal echocardiography. Echocardiographers are the healthcare professionals who are able to work independently in direct contact with the patient. Echocardiographers and physicians work as a team to accurately evaluate and assess for optimal diagnoses and management of care. Invasive The invasive cardiovascular technologist is a health care professional who assists cardiologists in the field of interventional cardiology and electrophysiology (EP) using specialized, high-tech equipment, devices and computers. Invasive specialists assist with locating and opening blockages in arteries in the heart and throughout the body, preventing or stopping heart attacks and improving quality of life by restoring normal blood flow. Invasive specialists also work in electrophysiology (EP) labs where problems associated with the heart’s electrical system are analyzed and treated using a variety of methods including ablation therapy, pacemaker and defibrillator implants.

Non Invasive

Admissions Process

(All buildings listed below can be located on the Central Campus map.)

CPCC College Admission 1. Attend a Cardiovascular Technology (CVT) Program Information Session at CPCC.

The CVT program hosts information sessions for students interested in a detailed description of the program and the

admission process. Dates and locations of these sessions will be posted on the CPCC Cardiovascular Technology program

website.

2. Complete the CPCC College Admission Application.

If not currently enrolled at CPCC, go to the Student Success Center in the Central High Building, and complete an

application to the college or submit an online application. Designate Cardiovascular Technology as the program of

interest. If you are a current student see Admissions to change your program of study. (A55280C)

3. Meet with a college counselor.

4. Request an official copy of your high school and college transcripts be sent to CPCC Student Records, PO Box 35009,

Charlotte, NC 28235-5009.

Transcripts are processed in the order of which they are received. Please allow up to four weeks for processing. You will

be notified to your CPCC student email when the evaluation is completed.

5. If your high school or college transcripts are not from the United States, you will need an International Transcript Evaluation

reviewed by an agent outside of Central Piedmont Community College.

A list of International Evaluators is available in the Counseling Department in the Central High Building on the CPCC

Central Campus or through the National Association of Credential Evaluating Services (NACES) website. There is a fee for

this service.

Required Testing

1. All applicants must take the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). You will need to schedule an appointment

online at the Testing Center website.

Admission into the Cardiovascular Therapy program is competitive and is determined by the TEAS results and

completed general education courses (page 3).

A study guide for the TEAS is available at www.atitesting.com.

The TEAS test is required for all applicants, even if the applicant has a prior college-level degree.

A copy of your TEAS test results MUST be attached to the application.

Program Admission

1. Submit a completed Cardiovascular Technology Program application and related documentation by the application deadline

(page 1).

2. The application and all related documentation should be turned into the locked drop-box in the mailroom BL (Belk/Health

Careers Building) 3545, sent by mail, or emailed to the Admissions Specialist (page 5).

3. Nine students are admitted for the Invasive track and nine students are admitted for the Non-invasive track. Applicants are

admitted to their chosen track in the order of the highest accumulated points. There is no minimum requirement.

4. Students will be notified of decisions at the beginning of May. Accepted students will then be required to attend a mandatory

orientation meeting at the end of May to discuss additional requirements for admitted students.

5. Upon acceptance into the Cardiovascular Technology program, in order to participate in clinical education experiences at

health care facilities students are required to:

Submit results of a North Carolina and/or national criminal background check at their own expense.

Students must also complete a medical exam, provide record of immunizations, show proof of medical insurance and

carry CPCC’s accident insurance.
