Parenthetical CitationsShortened school weeks are becoming more and more

common across the United States. “The four-school week is an increasingly visible example of the impact of state budget problems on rural education. This fall, fully one-fourth of South Dakota's districts will have moved to some form of the abbreviated schedule. Only Colorado and Wyoming have a larger proportion of schools using a shortened week. According to one study, more than 120 school districts in 20 states, most in the west, now use four-day weeks” (Brokaw). The shift to shorter school weeks can have positive outcomes. Research has shown that attendance among teachers and students increases, which saves districts money on substitute teachers. Student test scores have gone up as well (Turner). The increase in test score and attendance could be hard evidence to work against. With districts looking for ways to save money, but continue student success, the 4-day week might be the best solution.
