NEW DELHI, Dec 13:
Statutory rights of over 10crore elderly persons in Indiamust be recognised and imple-mented, the Supreme Court saidtoday, directing the Centre toobtain information from allStates and Union Territoriesabout the number of old agehomes in each district.
It also suggested a relook atthe pension for the elderly so asto make it is more realistic.
Emphasising the social jus-tice aspect, the apex court saidthat state is obligated to ensurethat right to live with dignity,shelter and health of citizens,including the elderly, are notonly protected but alsoenforced.
A bench of Justices Madan BLokur and Deepak Gupta direct-ed the Centre to obtain informa-tion from all the states about themedical facilities and geriatric
care available to senior citizensin each districts.
It said based on the informa-tion gathered by the Centre, aplan of action should be pre-pared for giving publicity toprovisions of the Maintenance
and Welfare of Parents andSenior Citizens Act, 2007 tomake the elderly aware abouttheir constitutional and statutoryrights.
The court said status reportsbe filed by the Centre on these
issues by January 31.It said the Centre must exer-
cise its power and issue appro-priate directions to the states foreffective implementation of theprovisions of the 2007 Act andalso conduct a review for the
purposes of monitoring itsprogress.
Referring to the ongoingschemes of the Governmentwhich are meant for elderly, thebench said, “It is high time thatthe Government of India has are-look at these schemes andperhaps overhaul them with aview to bring about convergenceand avoid multiplicity”.(PTI)
