• There are fewer jobs than there used to be.
• But, there is still work to be done and money to
be made.
• Take a look around your community for all the
people who are self-employed or operating small
businesses.
• Some of these small businesses are not much
more than one person with a pick-up truck who
is willing to do physical labor.
WC NLDI Online 13
Career and Professional
Development 4
• Self-employment may not be your long term
goal.
• You might want to consider it as a way of adding
to your income while you are looking for a
steady job.
• Develop a business plan whether self-
employment is a short, medium or long term
goal.
WC NLDI Online 14
Career and Professional
Development 4
• Remember, a good job will match your interests
and work preferences.
• Due to changes in the work world, you must be
open-mined towards self-employment and part-
time or short-term work.
• Spend as much time as you can looking at all of
the different jobs that are available.
• You will be much more successful in your job
search if you are clear about the type of work
that you want.
WC NLDI Online 15

in life.
