Notes:
1. Know your goals – The first step here is obviously to set goals. Set realistic, short term and long term goals. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do, but you can set goals around what you do know you want for your career. If you set your goals too narrow when you’re not sure, you might miss other great opportunities.
2. Examine yourself – Spend some time thinking about whether or not you have any self defeating behaviours, (For example: Negativity/cynicism, lateness/procrastination, low self‐efficacy/lack of confidence) or if anything else is holding you back in your life. Are you prepared to/able to relocate for work?
3. Take every development opportunity. Teach as many different classes as possible – volunteer to teach EAP, IELTS prep and Cambridge classes – if you want to manage, you need to understand as much as possible. Put your hand up for everything – team leader positions, curriculum development work, even if it is unpaid and takes up more of your time – look at it as an investment. They can all be put on a CV. Participate in all internal professional development and seek external opportunities.
4. Manage your boss and tell them your goals. If you don’t have a great relationship with your boss, what can YOU do to improve the relationship. What are your boss’ pressures and what do they need from you. If you went for another position, would your boss be able to give you a glowing reference? You must also

communicate what you want and not wait quietly to be recognized.5. Get qualified. Aside from the benefit of learning new skills and being prepared for
opportunities, there are sometimes just boxes that need to be ticked. Accept this and get busy getting the necessary qualifications. If you can, don’t take the cheapest/easiest option. As an example, we have a teacher qualification assessment service at NEAS, and far too often, we meet people who took a shortcut or didn’t do enough research and have found themselves in a position where they have to spend more time and money to make up for the shortcomings of their qualifications.
6. Be proactive. Proactively identify the company’s biggest problems and contribute to solving them. Chase opportunities and go back for second, third attempts. Subscribe to NEAS News.
7. Own your mistakes. Always own your mistakes and take responsibility for fixing any mistakes with your name attached to them. Cover your butt. Involve your boss in the mistake or issue early on so that the issue doesn’t escalate.
8. Network. Connect with staff at any NEAS, EA or other events you attend. Get business cards. Follow up with a polite email.
9. Be prepared to move ‘sideways’ or ‘downwards’. It might be necessary for you to consider working in a different company in order to achieve your goals. Don’t be too fussy. Go overseas if you can – sometimes progression is faster.
10. Create a LinkedIn profile – a good way to showcase yourself, follow organisations and institutes you’re interested in, stay updated with industry news and to network online. Resumes: Make sure you highlight any relevant achievements. Tailor your CV to the
position. Selection Criteria: Use the STAR method to respond to selection criteria. Interviews: Be ready for behavioural interview questions – have some examples pre
prepared that show the qualities you believe they will ask about.

I would like to leave you with an invitation to our conference, which will be even bigger and better than last year’s. The 2018 NEAS Management Conference will be held on the 9th, 10th and 11th of May. The theme is Beyond the Digital Revolution in Education and Training and we are particularly interested in highlighting how English Language Teaching is changing, being blended and conducted virtually by our providers.
