CS4HS at Sydney is a free two day workshop for high school math, science and computing teachers.
The next CS4HS @ Sydney workshop will be held on the 27th and 28th September. Registrations are now open.
Previous workshops have introduced participants to the design and study of algorithms that are used daily in applications such as Internet search engines, online advertising auctions, algorithmic trading on the stock market, genome sequencing, and artificial intelligence and that have made an impact in our society.
The CS4HS workshops are sponsored by Google and include informative talks by industry and academic leaders and demonstrate engaging ways to introduce recent developments in IT into high school computing classes, as well as incorporating computer science skills into high school science and mathematics classes in line with the proposed national curriculum. Participants also have the opportunity to interact with senior software engineers from Google.
Our workshops aim to provide teachers with support, materials and real world examples of computation in action for use in a classroom setting, including text materials and data for experiments. We present recent developments in the field of computer science and the exciting problems that students can work towards.
Discussion opportunities include a panel of industry representatives, academics and current university students, with a specific focus on how IT skills and algorithmic thinking are necessary for many careers, not just in computer science but also encompassing engineering, science, medical research, architecture and the arts.
We also showcase some of the extension activities and programs run by the university to extend academically gifted students, such as the National Computer Science School and NCSS Challenge.
The workshop is free of charge and seats are limited. For teachers outside the Sydney area a limited number of travel grants are available. Enquiries to Nicky Ringland, Outreach Officer, University of Sydney, [email protected]
Robotics in the classroom High-school students will soon be benefiting from Macquarie's expertise in robotics through a new program that brings high-tech computing into the classroom. Conducted as part of Google's CS4HS (Computer Science 4 High School), the program promotes computer science and computational thinking in high schools by training teachers how best to engage their students in Years 7-10. It was established in 2010 and this year saw schools participate in Europe, North America, Canada, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. Teachers who participated in Macquarie's program were provided with a robotics kit valued at $1000 to take back to their schools. They have been encouraged to enter a team of students from their school into the FIRST Tech Challenge National Tournament, to be held at Macquarie in December. To prepare for the challenge, student teams are required to design, build, program and test their robot. They must keep an engineering notebook documenting what they do, along with their communication and interaction with the community. Support for the workshop was provided by Macquarie's Pro-Vice Chancellor - Social Inclusion and the Australian Government's Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program, which aims to increase participation in higher education by students from low socio-economic backgrounds. Learn more about Google's Computer Science 4 High School initiative and find out how your school can get involved.

Pre-apprenticeships Pre-employment Pre-vocational An apprenticeship is a combination of work and structured training which leads to a nationally recognised trade qualification. Apprenticeships generally last four years and cover traditional trade areas. For people unable to secure an apprenticeship, a great alternative is a pre-apprenticeship course. Pre-apprenticeship courses help students start their career by providing preliminary skills for an apprenticeship. Students can get credit for up to the first year of an apprenticeship. Pre-apprenticeships also provide an opportunity for students to experience a trade area and decide if it’s the right one for them. Pre-employment and Pre-vocational courses are similar in that they provide training in basic skills for a specific industry area. These skills may assist in securing an apprenticeship or traineeship and give students practical skills for the workforce, as well as improve their chances of gaining employment. Entry requirements There are no formal educational requirements for pre-apprenticeship/employment courses. Often participants will be required to attend an Information Session prior to admission into these courses.
