Assessment & Discovery

• Strategies used to support individuals to identify skills, interests and set direction for employment and career development

• Key strategies include:– Career Planning– Discovery– Assessments– Action plans

• Career Planning– Person-centered– Results focus on what makes sense for

the person– Uses a team of supporters that know the

person best– It is not a “formal” funding driven plan

(IP, IPE, IEP, etc.)– Results are used to drive “formal” plans

• Resource: Career Discovery Guide

• Employment PathwayPlanning your road to

Employment

DISCOVERY

• Definition: to see, get knowledge of, learn of, find, or find out; gain sight or knowledge of (something previously unseen or unknown):

• Discovery– Discovery is not a strict “model” or

“process”– Discovery never stops– Discovery is all about “seeking answers”– The 4 most critical aspects to discover

• Conditions• Preferences• Contributions• Support Needs

• Discovery– Strategies

• Interviews (Individual, Team, etc.)• Observation (all environments)• Record Review (files, school records, etc.)• Past Experiences (work, social, recreation, etc.)• Career Exploration

• Assessments– Strategies• Interest Inventories and

other “pencil-paper” tests• Tests/Assessments utilized

by Workforce Development• Strategies used in Discovery

• Action Plans– Developed from all the information

gathered through Career Planning and Discovery. If done properly, it should paint a picture of the types of jobs that make sense for the person.

– These plans set the direction for job search efforts

– Note: If the picture isn’t clear, the plans focus on more discovery/career exploration activities

Putting it all Together• All the information gathered begins to paint a

picture of “What” a good job and career goal will be

• What types of jobs is the person interested in?• Types of jobs that match skills/interests• What type of work are they good at and enjoy

doing?• The team begins to look at preferred job tasks

and identify what types of jobs have those• Focus on “Tasks/Commonalities”-Don’t jump

to “Places”
