Career Services is free to every student on campus, and is in no way limited WR KHOSLQJ \RX ¿QG HPSOR\PHQW WKH\ DUH DOVR D VRXUFH WR KHOS ¿QG VWXGHQWV LQWHUQ VKLSV VFKRODUVKLS DVVLVWDQFH FKRRVLQJ D PDMRU ¿QGLQJ D FDPSXV MRE ZRUNLQJ RQ developing functional tools that are needed to get a job, assessing speech or com munication anxiety, providing advice for students who are scared to talk to their parents about their desired career path, and really anything else one would need to be a prepared, forwardthinking college student. One of the opportunities made available for students by Career Services was CareerFest. CareerFest was an entire week of events (February 19 – 24) to help students ¿QG WKHLU FDUHHU SDWK .LFNLQJ RII &DUHHU)HVW -DPLH )RWLRR KRVWHG ³'UHVV IRU 6XF cess.” 7KLV WRRN SODFH RQ WKH ¿UVW ÀRRU RI WKH 6/7& DQG -DPLH GLVFXVVHG ZRUN UHODWHG DSSDUHO TXHVWLRQV VXFK DV ³ZKDW LV WKH GLIIHUHQFH EHWZHHQ µEXVLQHVV FDVXDO¶ DQG µEXVLQHVV SURIHVVLRQDO"¶ One of the biggest events of CareerFest was the Career and Internship Fair. This year’s Fair had more than 20 employers in attendance who are interested in hiring Hendrix students. There were employers from the Old State House Museum, HewlettPackard, Acxiom, Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Simmons Food Bank, Camp Aldersgate, the FBI, and other workplaces that are technical and service driv en. A list of the employers that attended Career Fair can be found on the Career Services website, and on theZone. theZone is a job and internship database made available by the Career Ser vices staff. Each student receives access to theZone when entering Hendrix as a freshman. Students can access their accounts by going to theZone’s website, hendrixcsm.symplic ity.com, and entering their Hendrix email and password. The account is also a location to store portfolios, resumes, and cover letters, in D SODFH ZKHUH WKH\ FDQ¶W JHW ORVW LQ WKH PLGVW RI MXPEOHG FRPSXWHU ¿OHV /RWV RI HPSOR\ ers and graduates also have access to theZone. It is a place where they can post jobs and opportunities that Hendrix students might be interested in. Career Services also hosts information sessions with alumni or employers to discuss jobs and future plans. Some of the groups who have participated in the infor mation sessions in the past are Teach For America, Eco Fest, Southwestern Energy, Stephens Inc., Windstream, UAMS pharmacy school, grad schools, and international sites. These are oneonone conversations, where students are given WKH FKDQFH WR WDON WR SHRSOH LQ ¿HOGV WKDW WKH\ DUH LQWHUHVWHG LQ 7KH ³)$&7 )ULGD\V´ DUH SRVWHG RQ +HQGUL[ 7RGD\ EXW WKH\ DUH ¿UVWFRPH ¿UVWVHUYH 7KH JXHVW XVXDOO\ VHHV between 68 students during his visit. All this career talk can seem daunting, but the Career Services staff doesn’t want students to worry. All of these resources are available to stu GHQWV IUHH RI FKDUJH 7KH ERRNV DQG ÀDVK FDUGV FDQQRW EH FKHFNHG RXW RI WKH OLEUDU\ EXW students are welcome to sit, read, and make copies. 7KH &DUHHU 6HUYLFHV GHSDUWPHQW DOVR KDV QHZV IRU VHQLRUV WKHUH LV D QHZ ³7D[ Class” in the works, to be available in March. The class is a onehour workshop that will inform students about tax codes, basic tax return information, and what students need to know to do their taxes. The Career Services department wants to emphasize to stu dents that the idea for the tax class came from students. They are always open to student ideas and suggestions.
