CAREERSOf all the decisions you make in your life, one of the most important will be the career you choose. You may hold one job or many; work for a salary or as a volunteer; work in an office, factory, or at home. Women have many more career opportunities today than they did in the past.

Psalms 32:8 (NIrV) says “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” God’s perfect plan for you includes your future career. Even though you may not know what you want to do, God already knows, and He is preparing you for it.

THINGS TO KNOW AND DOComplete the Tasks, plus the number of tasks listed in each section.

There are countless occupations in the United States and around the world. You may never have heard of the occupation that would be perfect for you. Among the first things to consider when choosing a career are your interests and abilities. No one wants to work at a job that they do not enjoy.

One way to narrow down the choices of careers is to complete a career interest survey. Many colleges and universities have these available online. Complete one of the following career interest surveys:

1. INTERVIEW TWO WOMEN WHO HAVE CAREERS THAT YOU FIND INTERESTING.

Questions to ask:

• Why did you choose this career?

• What special training or classes are required?

• What is most rewarding?

• Are there advantages/disadvantages to being a woman in this field?

• What advice do you have for a girl considering this career?

You may have other questions.

I interviewed:

Do the following:

• Learn how to complete a job application.

• Find out about the job opportunities for teenagers in your community. Check with the county or state employment office or your school counselor for possible leads.

• Learn the “Do’s and Don’ts” of the job interview. Check one of the following websites for suggestions:

1. MOST JOB DESCRIPTIONS INCLUDE A DETAILED LISTING OF PHYSICAL DEMANDS, SUCH AS THE ABILITY TO LIFT UP TO 20 POUNDS OR TO STAND FOR UP TO TWO HOURS.

They may also include environmental demands for that job, such as the ability to work in extreme heat. Make up a job description for one of the following positions that includes environmental and physical demands:

• Bell ringer for Christmas kettles

• Summer camp counselor

• Girl Guard leader

Log on to www.shrm.org/templatestools/samples/hrforms/articles/pages/1cms_002102.aspx to find a sampling of physical and environmental demands.

2. MANY BUSINESSES HAVE DRESS CODES.

Those dress codes may be necessary to keep employees safe or because the company wants everyone to look a certain way.

Are dress codes fair?

2. TOUR A BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION THAT OFFERS A VARIETY OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.

Make a list of possible places to visit. Choose one and arrange for a group tour. Let the tour guide know that your group is especially interested in learning about the careers available at the location.

The place we visited:

3. ATTEND A LOCAL JOB FAIR.

4. MOST PEOPLE WHO HAVE PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME JOBS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE FEDERAL INCOME TAX FORMS EACH YEAR.

Ask your leader to invite a knowledgeable person to come to a troop meeting. Ask the speaker to explain the reason for a tax system and how it works. Complete a 1040A tax return—this will give you the skills to complete your own income tax forms in the future.

Make a list of the career opportunities you observed during your visit.

5. DO THE FOLLOWING:

• Find out what social security is and what documents you need when applying for a job.

• Learn the meaning of these terms: withholding, exemptions, FICA, and I-9 documentation.

• Learn how to protect yourself from identity theft.

• I have memorized my social security number.

NOTE: Always protect your social security number and never recite it to anyone. Do not use it as a password or share it with your friends.

1. CHOOSE A CHARACTER FROM THE BIBLE AND RESEARCH THEIR CAREER PATH.

What types of jobs did they have? What type of education? What evidence of God’s plan for their life is reflected in this person’s occupation?

Debate the pros and cons of one of the following situations with a friend or group of friends.

– OR –Write an argument in support of or opposition to one of the following situations.

• You work for an automobile dealership. You are required to wear a skirt and blouse or dress. The men wear slacks and dress shirts with ties. During Super Bowl week, the men are allowed to skip the shirts and ties and wear tee shirts, jerseys, or sweatshirts supporting their favorite teams, but the women have to stick with the dress code.

• You work for a bank that provides uniforms. You are allowed to wear modest earrings, watches, and wedding rings. You have a cross necklace that you have worn since the day you joined your church. The bank says it has to go.

• The gas station where you are a cashier has asked you to cover up your tattoo. The tattoo is a small rose on your wrist. You got in remembrance of your grandmother because it was her favorite flower.

Possible Bible characters are: Deborah, Moses, David, Peter, or Paul. You can choose another character with the guidance of your leader.

2. GOD HAS GIVEN YOU MANY GIFTS AND TALENTS THAT YOU WILL USE IN YOUR CAREER.

Complete a spiritual gifts inventory to learn what your spiritual gifts are. Take the survey at one of these links:

Additional Resources

If you are working on the Catherine Booth Award, take photos to share with the Review Committee.

1. TURN YOUR CAREER GOALS INTO A STRETCH PROJECT.

Volunteer at least 12 hours.

• If you are interested in the medical or nursing fields, medical records, or working with senior citizens, you could volunteer as a “Candy Striper” in a hospital or a nursing home.

• If you are interested in working with animals, you could volunteer at the humane society, an animal shelter or a zoo.

• If you are interested in working with plants, you could volunteer at a nursery, florist, or on a farm.

S-T-R-E-T-C-H Project(s)Complete ONE of the following projects.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

• If you are interested in teaching, you could volunteer at a day care or summer day camp.

• If you are interested in social services, you could help out at a food pantry, feeding program, or homeless shelter.

2. WORK AT A PART-TIME JOB FOR A MINIMUM OF TWO MONTHS.

Do the following things to prepare yourself:

Make a fact sheet of information needed to complete a job application.

Look in the want ads for part-time jobs or get a lead on a job opportunity through your school, corps/church or friends.

Make an appointment to fill out a job application and have a personal interview. Review Task 3.

Get the job.

Once you have the job, keep a time-and-experience log of the hours worked, your responsibilities, feelings, skills learned, etc. Share this with your leader or troop. At the end of two months, ask your supervisor to write an evaluation of your performance. Show it to your leader.

Ask a friend to take some photos of you at work. Save the photos and log for the Review Committee.

3. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR CAREER IS WHETHER OR NOT YOU WANT TO STAY CLOSE TO HOME OR MOVE FAR AWAY.

Some occupations like teachers, bankers, and doctors have positions anywhere. Others are limited to big cities.

In your community, find out what types of occupations have many job openings and which have only a few. Also, find out about openings for a career that you are interested in.

If you choose a career that would require you to move, where might you have to go to find a job?
