CAREERS FAIR

“A fantastic opportunity for our stu-dents to engage with a wide range of future options. Local and national HE providers were present to give advice on university courses. I attended a fasci-nating talk with Dr Mark King, Cambridge University about the facts and myths about an Oxbridge applica-tion. The growth of apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships are a real game-changer and it was good to see many providers in attendance and so much interest from our students. Our Annual Careers Fair for students and parents of our years 10, 11 & Sixth Form students,

took place on 23th January 2019 and as in previous years, was a lively, well attended and

successful event.

This type of event gives our students substantial exposure to a wide variety of the multiple opportunities that are open to them. With over 50 exhibitors representing a broad range of industry sectors, apprentice-ship and higher education providers and further education colleges students were presented with a diverse representation of our job market. The evening provided parents and students with significant opportunities to explore options after Canons High School.

Later in the evening, break out talks were held by some exhibitors including an insightful presentation from Dr Mark King from Cambridge University.

From Catering to Engineering; Law to medicine and Public Services to Finance; Our exhibitors provided rele-vant and current advice to our students who were really grateful of the immeasurable guidance they were given.

An event like this is only possible when people are willing to get involved so I would like to offer my thanks once again to everyone who contributed including our fantastic exhibitors for giving up their time, our speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules, the students ambassadors who helped set up the event, our students and parents for their interest and to all the staff at Canons for their support and help during the event.

Mrs Christina Reffold, Careers Co-coordinator

Scott Gough, Manager.

“It was a pleasure to have the oppor-tunity to meet the talent of the future. We are facing a future skills shortage in our industry and are always recruit-ing for highly skilled technicians. Events such as your careers fair give us the opportunity to introduce your students to the Mercedes-Benz ap-prenticeship programme, a pro-gramme that is built around training some of the best technicians in the world who can then look forward to a stable, long term career, with one of the top ten global brands.”

Ayham Al-Saffar

“I was impressed over how a couple of students seemed to have already given their future careers some thought and so opened with the questions that mattered to them most. This meant that those individuals got the most out of each chat”.

Jessica Harris, Careers Advisor

“A very worthwhile event for the students to learn

about opportunities available in the Royal Navy. We lots of interest about the careers available some from students who were seeking employ-ment with the Royal Navy and others enquiring about the Royal Navy and what we do some of whom were surprised that it is not all about ‘war

and fighting’. All the students who we spoke to were polite and engaging young people and it was a pleasure to be able to give them Information about the Royal Navy. An event that we would happily attend again or to give further support to the school and students.”

Julia McLarthy, Head of Redevelopment Finance

"From the moment I arrived at the school, I was met with an army of smiling, willing students who were very keen to assist me to find parking and help me with my belongings out of the car. As I stepped into the reception area, I was met by another enthusiastic and helpful student offering me refreshments and showing me where to set up. I was soon armed with water, tea and enough cake to open a shop .The evening was very well organised from the email communications to the set up on the night. I was impressed with the variety of representatives the students could select to speak with. It was the Canon's school students that impressed me the most. Not only the volunteer helpers on the night, but also those students whom I saw from years 10-12 attending for careers advice. They were engaging, intelligent, humorous and above all keen to find out more about their future career pathway. I thor-oughly enjoyed talking to them and left the evening optimistic for their bright futures ahead of them"

“The Careers fair was good and there

were a range of differed businesses

and universities that I was able to talk

to. Also the Oxbridge talk was really

helpful” - Mariam, Year 11 student.

“It was really useful in informing us on universities and

the advice they gave us was very helpful. I learnt a lot

about the A Levels that I need to do to get the univer-

sity courses that I want. The representatives also ad-

vised me on the nest universities and how to find out

what I want to do. I enjoyed it a lot.” - Amar Year 10

Student

“The Careers Fair gave me the opportunity to begin visualizing possible short term

and long term paths. For instance, it allowed me to consider a variety of possible

careers for the future, but at the same time, it provided many prospects for the

shorter term, through the presence of many university representatives. Therefore,

the Careers Fair allowed me to explore an array of different options and it provided

me with a better image as to what I would like to do as a career and what course I

would like to study at university, as well as the grades I will be requiring, but also

the skills involved in the different possible careers.” - Georgianna. Year 13 student.
