How do I Find a Job with Good Employment Prospects?
Rapid changes in the world of work and emerging new technologies mean that we need to
try and stay ahead of the game by looking for occupations that have better job prospects than
others. How do we do this? We should be taking the following factors into account when
looking for a job with good employment prospects:
• Number of people - The more people employed in an occupation, the more
likely there will be jobs in every location.
• Employment growth – Historical information tells us how many new jobs
have been created in an occupation. Projected growth information can indicate
how many additional jobs there are likely to be in the future.
• Skills shortages – These indicate good opportunities in an occupation for
people with the skills and experience needed. Shortages vary by location and
change over time.
• Job turnover - This is the annual percentage of employees who move out of
the occupation into other occupations, retirement, or unemployment plus
employees who change jobs within the same occupation. Turnover creates
opportunities in all occupations when employees need to be replaced.
Skills for Finding a Job – Full-time/Part-time/Casual
The following are resources you can access to help you gain the skills you need for your job
search:

a resumé builder, example resumés, interview advice, and other helpful job
search tools.

you find a job and more.

a step-by-step approach to gaining an apprenticeship or traineeship.

step approach to gaining an apprenticeship or traineeship.

It also has a resumé builder.

What are Employers Looking For?
The findings of a Department of Employment survey of employers’ recruitment experiences
suggests that, for school leavers, they are looking for:
• Experience – through work experience, voluntary work, or transitional jobs
(jobs you have before the job you really want), part-time work, internships.
Experience is essential for some jobs.
• Employability skills – team work and communication, work ethic, reliability
and motivation, creative thinking and problem solving, personal presentation and
organisation. You need to be able to demonstrate these to employers (ie tell
them when you used these skills and how successful they were)
• A good application – Research the job and business, tailor each application to
the job, pay attention to spelling and grammar. You are unlikely to have an
interview and keep a job if you don’t display these traits.
• Education and training – complete Year 12 and gain a post-school
qualification. Depending on the job you are seeking, pre-apprenticeship
certificates, certificates III and IV, diplomas, and degrees open the door to more
job opportunities.
The above information was adapted from What are Employers Looking For? on the Department
of Employment website and click on the sixth link.
Where can I Find Information about the Jobs in which I’m
Interested?
• myfuture website - Sign up for free if this is your first time on the website. Go to the
Occupations section and search for your job of interest. Click on the Prospects tab.
• Job Outlook provides occupational information, including job prospects.
• The Australian Jobs publication provides information about the labour market for
industries and occupations as well as states, territories, and regions of Australia.
It also provides occupational and industry information that will help you understand
where the jobs will be in the future.
• The Labour Market Information Portal provides you with up-to-date information
about your local labour market. It provides information at the national, state, and
regional level.
• Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business - National, state and
territory skill shortage information provides skill shortage lists for the state, territory,
and national levels.
Some cautions:
• Fast growth within an occupation does not guarantee more job opportunities because
the number of people seeking work may outnumber the job openings.
• Even occupations with declining job prospects can offer job opportunities as people
move across jobs.
• It is difficult to accurately predict long-term job prospects. Unexpected events can
have an enormous impact on the labour market (eg very few people predicted the
global financial crisis).
![Page 8: Careers News 28 November 2019 - Home - Mount Alvernia ...€¦ · reer Exploration Fierce Girls Podcast From athletes to aviators, scientists to spies, Australia is full of girls](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060312/5f0b1bd67e708231d42ee40f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Consequently, when you are making career decisions, the issue of job prospects is just one
piece of information you need to consider. Other information includes your interests, skills,
values, aspirations, work preferences, education, and training requirements.
Your Unconventional Career Path Does Not Reflect a Lack
of Focus
Shalini Govil-Pai General Manager of Android TV, shares her thoughts about her career
mapping process. She suggests that an unconventional, multi-faceted career does not reflect
a lack of focus—quite the contrary. Success is not linear. You have to take charge of your
career, own your differences, and cultivate habits that will allow you to succeed in any
environment. Here are a few ways that she maintained focus and perspective, even when
success seemed a long way off. Click here to read more:
Employment

The Future of Work for Australian Graduates
The Centre for Future Work, The Australian Institute 2019 has published its 2019 report,
The Future of Work for Australian Graduates: The changing landscape of university-employment
transitions in Australia. This report begins with a general overview of the major forces driving
disruption and change in the Australian labour market. One, of course, is technology: rapid
evolution in the scope, capacities, and employment impacts of new innovations like artificial
intelligence, advanced robotics, and big data analysis. However, technology is not the only
disruptive force at work. Dramatic changes in work organisation, business models, and
employment relationships are also changing jobs and how we perform them - and all this
change occurs in the context of a world grappling with other structural change: from
demographic change, environmental change, globalisation, and more. Click here to read the
report in full.

Miscellaneous
QTAC and Tertiary Entry
Connect with QTAC
If you have any questions about your QTAC application, visit page 4 of the 2020 Year 12 Guide
for all the ways you can be in touch with QTAC.
General Tips for a Successful Transition to University
• Familiarise yourself with the campus before the semester starts.
• Attend Orientation week events. This is where you find out about the student
support services, social clubs, and other activities available at your university. Check out the Career and Employment Services. These are the people who can
help you find a job.
• Identify any study skills on which you need to polish and book into a workshop.
• Register with your university’s Disability Services if applicable.
• See the university’s financial or counselling services if you are worried about
money or you have other concerns.
• Find students in the same course and attend student-run social activities.
• Visit the library (virtual and physical) and attend workshops on how to use the
library effectively.
• Attend all tutorials.
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Other tips for first year university students can be found in UQ’s The ultimate first year
bucket list, QUT’s What to expect at university, and the ABC’s Top tips for first year uni
students. For a bit of comic relief, visit the Collective Noun Facebook page.
How does QTAC Work Out if you’ll Receive an Offer?
QTAC uses eligibility and merit to decide if you can enter a course. Eligibility is determined
by prerequisites and the institution’s admissions rules. Merit is based on your OP/ATAR or
selection rank. More details about this process can be accessed on the Entry requirements
webpage. You can go into your QTAC Application Services account to check the status of
the courses for which you have applied.
![Page 15: Careers News 28 November 2019 - Home - Mount Alvernia ...€¦ · reer Exploration Fierce Girls Podcast From athletes to aviators, scientists to spies, Australia is full of girls](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060312/5f0b1bd67e708231d42ee40f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
How will I Know if I Have an Offer?
QTAC will send you an email (or an SMS). In most cases, you will have four days to respond.
It is essential to monitor your emails to avoid missing an offer. If you don’t respond by the
due date, your offer will lapse and your application will become inactive. If this happens,
contact QTAC immediately, as they may be able to reinstate your offer.
Snippets for Beginning University Students
The following are summaries of recent articles on tertiary entry. Five Ways to Tell if a Uni is
Perfect for You – an article from the Year 13 website - lists the following five criteria for
selecting your perfect university:
• Course selection – Does the uni have the perfect course for you? Does the teaching environment meet your learning style (eg purely academic or more
hands-on)? Will you have an opportunity to study overseas as part of the course?
• Uni vibes – Because uni is different to high school, you need to make sure the
uni you pick will give you every chance to ace the course (upgrade pathways,
bridging courses, assignment support, etc).
• Support – What support services are provided (eg career support, mental health
and counselling options)?
• The fun stuff - Sus out things like clubs and societies, sports teams, uni games,
the uni bar, open days, orientation weeks, career seminars, and all the other
events the uni might offer.
• Location – Can you realistically get to the uni? Are you prepared to leave home?
If you don’t like to travel much, check out unis that are close by.
You could also check out Art of Smart’s The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right University
as they have ten steps you could follow.
When will Offers Be Made to Year 12 Students?
Students applying for courses not requiring Year 12 results will have started to receive their
offers from Friday 15 November (their last day at school). Offers will also be made between
the release of Year 12 results on 14 December and the 15 January 2020 offer round. Don’t
panic if you don’t receive an early offer, as course offers will be made on all offer-round dates

The Bonded Medical Program provides students a Commonwealth-supported medical place
at an Australian university in return for a commitment to work in regional, rural, and remote
areas for a specified period. The key highlights of the reforms are:
• a consistent three-year Return of Service Obligation (RoSO). BMP participants
who have a twelve-month RoSO will keep this under the new arrangements;
• more options and flexibility so it is easier for participants to complete their
RoSO;
• replacement of the individual contract/deed of agreement with a statutory
scheme;
• a program specific online web portal (BRoSS) and mobile phone application to
allow participants to self-manage their RoSO; and
• support to all bonded participants through the Rural Workforce Agencies.
Click here for more information and details on the new program.
