Our Cargo Experts
B eing a supercargo at Rickmers-Linie in Hamburg,Valeriy Rokotyanskyy is part of our team of experts
for break-bulk, project and heavy lift cargoes. Supercar-goes are members of our Operations Department, whichusually get involved once cargo shipments are booked, sometimes even much earlier when a piece is still underconstruction. The responsible Stowage Planners at theRickmers-Linie oces either in Hamburg, Shanghai orHouston create a stowage plan for the vessel. In Hamburg
and Shanghai this is supported by the use of RICOSYS(Rickmers Cargo Operations Simulation System), our state-of-the-art cargo management system, which is used to
digitalize cargo items and to create a realistic 3D modelfor the simulation of cargo lifting, handling and bed-
ding on the vessels.
The planner puts in all available information about eachitem – weight, dimensions, special handling instructions, and method statements issued by the transport engi-neers for sophisticated cargo such as heavy lifts or over-dimensioned units. Certainly the order of loading anddischarging also has to be taken into account. The resultis a plan which offers the best solution for stowing themaximum amount of cargo at a minimum of cost andwithout any damage or risk during transportation. Whenall the planning is done, the supercargo comes into play.He is attending the vessel at every port where cargo
is handled.
About a week before the vessel’s arrival, Rokotyanskyy

reviews the stowage plan and discusses all relevantinformation with the planner. He gives his feedback forfurther adjustments and gets geared up for his workon site. A day before the vessel’s arrival it is time forRokotyanskyy to be at the port. There he inspects allthe cargo that is to be shipped. Has everything arrived? Does the cargo meet its expected specications regar-ding size, packing, safety requirements, etc.? Are all
necessary documents ready? If not, the supercargocontacts the planner or line manager – depending onthe situation – to nd a solution.
He also talks to the terminal employees, stevedores, lashing inspectors, the vessel’s captain and crew to discussall relevant topics, tasks and possible changes – alwaysstriving for the highest quality and efficiency of allactions and avoiding extra costs. He issues the programof the vessel’s port stay and the estimated time of de-parture, takes pictures and prepares documentationfor the port of discharge, exchanges information with
the oce in Hamburg and makes sure that sophistica-ted cargo is handled and lashed exactly as per methodstatement. When a customer arrives to supervise hiscargo, it is also the supercargo who is his counterpart. Inother words, the supercargo is there to be the link andcoordinator between all parties involved in loading ordischarging a Rickmers-Linie vessel. “My job is to makesure that all cargo reaches its destination in the samegood condition as loaded,” Rokotyanskyy explains.
When all cargo is successfully loaded and/or discharged,Rokotyanskyy issues a stowage plan that displays thestatus at departure and a pre-stowage plan for the next
port. But work is not done for him yet – he flies to thenext port of call to repeat all actions and handle furthercargo there. Only when the vessel sails from its last port
covered by the Rickmers-Linie oce in Hamburg arethe nal cargo documents issued and sent to the nextRickmers-Linie Operations Department, so the supercargo there can take over. Back at the office, Rokotyanskyywill take part in a review meeting with all RickmersGroup parties involved in this process to discuss whatwent well or should be improved.
Besides Rokotyanskyy there are six more supercargoesworking for Rickmers-Linie in Hamburg, ve in Houston, covering the American ports, and four in Shanghai forall Asian ports. Rokotyanskyy and most of the othersupercargoes are master mariners and thereby benetfrom their own experience at sea. At the age of ten, heworked aboard a small cruise vessel for the rst time. In1989 Rokotyanskyy graduated from Odessa State MarineAcademy and sailed as 4th, 3rd, 2nd and chief officerand, from 1999 to 2005, as master. In 2005 he joinedRickmers-Linie Shanghai and moved to Rickmers-LinieHamburg in 2006.

RICOSYS
R ickmers-Linie constantly strives to improve servicequality and to increase overall efficiency. This has
inspired us to develop a software solution that changesstowage planning and cargo management completely.Cargo items are digitalized to a realistic CAD model for
the simulation of cargo lifting, handling and beddingon our vessels - for the benet of an optimized cargoflow with a reduced risk of damage to the cargo.
RICOSYS consists of three main modules:
RICSIM is used for feasibility studies and to simulateloading / lifting operations.
RICSTOW represents the shipping industry‘s rst virtual3D stowage planning system for breakbulk, heavy liftand project cargo.
RICSTAB is the tool for the calculation of vessel stabilityand stress factors.
All three modules are connected to a joint stowage data-base called RICDAT .

RICOSYS - Five main advantages
Feasibility sudies are much easier and more precise than ever
Important information for optimized lashing can be gained at an early stage andndings can be incorporated in the construction phase of the project cargo unit
Less interference with port routines, more efficient port operations
Testing and simulation is done by computer, rather than „live on stage“
Better cargo safety, reduced risk of damage

Rickmers in Japan
R ickmers (Japan) Inc. was registered as a Japanese cor-poration on 1 June 2006. Prior to this, all of Rickmers’
business in Japan had been handled through an agent.Establishing the subsidiary reflects Rickmers-Linie’slong-term commitment to its Japanese customers andthe signicance of the Japanese market.
“Create one strong team with one ultimate goal - toincrease the sales of the Round-The-World Pearl String
Service and to broaden our Japanese customer base.”
This was our mission in 2006 and we started with a
team of six, led by Yoshiaki Kawabuchi. Over the yearswe have tripled our sales, increased our customer base
signicantly and gained considerable recognition inthe local market. We have become a major player inthe Japanese break bulk, project and heavy lift marketand acquired the majority market share from Japan tothe USA.
We were proud to transport “Kibo”, the Japanese Experi-ment Module for the International Space Station, fromYokohama to Port Canaveral. Other contracts have includedrubber-tyred gantry cranes, coke drums, transformers, reactors, generators, presses, columns and a consider-able amount of equipment that is ultimately used forthe production of carbon bre for Boeing’s 787 Dream-
liner. Together with Eastern Car Line (ECL), we secured amulti-year contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries forfor shipment of windmill equipment to the USA.

Securing such contracts demands enormous effort fromeveryone and involves months, sometimes years, of
follow-up with customers. Rickmers Japan was heavilyinvolved with expansion eorts in the Trans Pacic tradesince 2006 in cooperation with ECL.
Sadly, 2010 began with the passing of our CEO, Kawa-buchi-san. In June 2010, we found ourselves fortunate tohave convinced Munechika (Mark) Shiba to join the ma-nagement team in Japan as Representative Director, with Richard Stinchcombe taking over as CEO. Mark‘s extensiveexperience with Maersk has proved invaluable to theteam. In 2010 we were successful in securing the Agencyof Hyundai Merchant Marine’s project division in Japan.
In September 2010 we moved to a larger but equallyconvenient location in Tamachi, Tokyo. We are now ateam of ten; one larger team and one goal!

O ur innovative Round-the-World Pearl String Servicewhich was inaugurated in 2003 is the backbone of
our services. With the unique concept of offering fort-nightly sailings, fast transit times and reliable schedules, the Pearl String Service has revolutionized shipping ofheavy-lift and project cargoes, enabling customers toplan their cargo flows more easily.
The base ports served every fortnight are Hamburg,Antwerp, Genoa, Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh Cityor Haiphong, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Dalian, Xingang,Qingdao, Masan, Kobe or Yokohama or Nagoya, NewOrleans, Houston, Philadelphia and again Hamburg.Further ports close to this route are added according
to demand.
The Pearl String Service is served by nine identical30,000 dwt purpose-built Superex Heavy Multi-Purpose Container (MPC) ships, which were designed primarilywith project cargo in mind and constructed in Chinabetween 2002 and 2004.
The vessels are equipped with four large cranes, thetwo heaviest of which can be twinned for a liftingcapacity of up to 640 tonnes. The main hatches are 32min length to allow long loads to be accommodatedbelow deck. Adjustable tweendecks allow for varia-
tions in cargo height. Furthermore, a dehumidifyingsystem controls the air in all holds, ensuring protectionfrom condensation for all types of cargo.
