SUCCESS IS Crystal CLEAR

One of the ANSA McAl Group’s stock of

companies Carib Glassworks was founded in 1947 as an answer

to a need in the market and have since found firm footing within the country

as one of the leading manufacturers and producers of glass.“We have always focused on being the premium glass package provider in the

region,” managing director, David Hadeed tells us, “We are also present

in Caricom and the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and

Puerto Rico.”

coatings (as with cans or plastic) to preserve the contents which it

protects. This is the reason why outside of the food and beverage

industry even the medical and scientific community make use of

glass. Inert and taint-free, glass does not contaminate food or drink

while protecting them from moisture, aroma and gaseous escape or

penetration.

“It’s also shape-versatile,” David adds, “Bottles come in an endless

variety of shapes, sizes and colours that enhance a product’s image

giving it a ‘classy’ look. Some manufacturers use the shape of a bottle

to give their product a unique identity e.g the distinctive Coca Cola

Trademark Bottle and Trinidad’s own Solo Apple J Bottles.”

Carib Glassworks manufacturers glass containers for the food,

beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

StaffAs one of the ANSA Mcal Group companies Carib Glassworks

strictly adheres to the standards and procedures of their parent

company. The ANSA McAL Group of Companies is a local company

headquartered in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and has been

doing business since 1881, listed on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock

Exchange it is one of the largest conglomerates in the Caribbean with

an asset base of TT$11.3 billion and one of the largest employers with

over 6000 employees across it’s companies.

“Of that number three hundred and fifty people work with Carib

Glassworks, and each employee undergoes a rigorous, industry

specific, training plan. This is needed due to the unique technical

skills needed for glass manufacturing,” David expands, “Individual

development for our staff is very important to our business and their

personal and career development Have always been a big part of our

growth plans. This will be no different in 2014 and beyond. The aim is

to build a performance driven organization.”

The ClientsA great deal of competition has sprouted up which is expected

in a company that has worked at such a high standard for so many

CARIB GLASSWORKS

From the onset the company enjoyed quick growth and rapid development, becoming a leading and innovative producer of glass packaging in the Caribbean and Latin American region. Located in Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies they offer a wide range of standard and customized glass packaging that meets International Quality and Environmental standards suitable for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, beer, wine and spirits.

“Carib Glassworks is focussed on productivity, we have

two furnaces and six manufacturing lines and a specific

business to business model that works 100% with

direct distribution,” David says.

Bottles are still one of the preferred methods of packaging

products. Manufacturers, of all types, like glass because it is a superb

barrier, needing no artificial additives (as with cardboard) or internal

Curaçao Limestone is a very pure Calcium Carbonate (CACO3) from the Table Mountain on the island of Curaçao. This calcium marine deposit was formed in a very dry and a very clear sea water environment during millions of years with no influence from river sediment and other minerals, like iron etc.

Therefore this calcium has a hight (99%) CACO3 content, is very white in color and has an excellent solvability compared to other limestone products.

decades. While Carib Glassworks, and ANSA McAL have one of the

most secure foundations on the islands they have place a great deal of

attention to ensure that they remain in firm lead of their sector. David

explains how this begins with the customers:

“As part of our on-going effort to ensure our customers are

satisfied we have monthly business reviews across the board and

deploy a biannual online survey to measure our customer satisfaction,”

he attests, “This is critical since the market is very competitive and

this is a key factor for customer retention.”

He continues, “Also, to stay competitive, we analyse market

activities and encourage monthly market visits for export customers

and weekly customer visits for domestic customers. We’ve also

created an active Innovation team in charge of generating new

projects annually.”

Suppliers“It’s also crucial to work with the right businesses,” he continues,

“In fact the choice of companies to supply a business will always

influence the overall success. For example Mijnmaatschappij Curaçao

B.V have supplied us our limestone sand, our most important material

for over a decade.”

Relationships like this between Carib Glassworks and

Mijnmaatschappij Curaçao B.V are quintessential to the overall

business approach of this company who look at relationship building

as one of the key factors to longevity.

New Developments For 2013/2014 And Beyond

Carib Glassworks has been

recycling glass since its inception

in 1948. CGL obtains its cullet

(the raw material term for used

glass) from landfills and dumps,

bars, hotels, schools, community

groups and residential

associations, private and public

companies and individuals. In

addition to these local sources,

cullet is also imported from

regional and extra regional

sources.

Glass packaging has an

advantage over other types

of packaging material as far as

the impact on the environment

is concerned (glass is a 100%

recyclable). All glass containers

melted and reshaped will make

new containers without any

loss to quality, thus there is

no place for glass in the trash

bin. We are promoting greater

awareness for the importance of

glass recycling and to encourage

the public to recycle used glass

by depositing them in glass

recycling bins. This will in turn

remove excess burdens from

our landfills and dumps and

will preserve and conserve the

earth’s natural resources like

sand and limestone.

Carib Glass encourages

communities to get involved in

the recycling programme.

“We have created a

nationwide recycling program as

a means to instigate change from

the source.” David says.
