From the EditorI’ve recently been enjoying a further delve into

my Dictionary of Forgotten English, a musty,

dusty tome which I heave down from a very high

shelf from time to time, for the sheer pleasure of

discovering all kinds of words and phrases long

since extinct from our language. And if, like me,

you love words for their own sake, but hesitate

to use them without knowing exactly what they mean, here’s a

selection which you may like to slip casually into conversation over

the coming months.

Flire – (verb) originates from an old Icelandic word, and means to

have the look of laughter on your face without actually laughing

out loud. (Now I come to think about it, I employ this expression

quite a lot. Maybe you do, too.)

Callifudge (noun) – from Lancashire, around the turn of the last

century, meaning a trick, hoax or swindle

Flizzoms – (noun) from the Swedish, meaning small fragments of

things. A useful one, this.

Urk – (noun) a small child or diminutive person. The perfect

epithet to use on your grandchildren.

And my personal favourite? Knick-knackatorian (noun) – a person

who collects or deals in knick-knacks. You probably know who I mean.

Now – here comes the major challenge.

Can you get them all into one sentence without

your listener even batting an eyelid? It’s got to

be worth a try!

What would happen if you

could no longer look after

things for yourself? Glenys

Laws at Collective Legal

Solutions explains how to

plan in advance

We all realise there may

come a time when we may

be unable, or too frail, to

look after our own affairs

– perhaps because of an

accident, illness or just as

we get older. Whatever the

cause, someone still has to

pay your bills, manage your

finances and speak on your

behalf on medical issues.

If you plan in advance and

create a Lasting Power of

Attorney (LPA), you will be

able to choose who you want

to manage things for you. A

friend or relative – someone

you trust.

If you don’t organise this

now it may mean that it

cannot be done later, as to

make an LPA you must be

assessed as mentally capable

of doing so.

What happens if you have

no LPA?

Your relatives or friends would

have to apply to the Court of

Protection, requesting to be

appointed as your Attorney.

This decision lies with the

court, as this

choice is taken

away from

you. It can

be a costly

Have you got all your affairs in order?

and lengthy process, which

can create many problems and

worry.

It’s also possible that

someone you would not have

chosen yourself could take

control of your finances, and

decisions about your medical

treatment.

Apart from helping with

LPAs, we also help you with

writing or updating your Will,

and can give advice on how to

protect your home from long

term care fees. Doing these

simple things will give you and

your relatives peace of mind.

For a free informal consultation at home, or for more information, call Glenys Laws on 01903 200982 or email [email protected]

With the internet becoming

more and more popular, many

of us are concerned about the

safety of children and young

people being exposed to

inappropriate material. But it’s

not only the young who need

to stay safe when online.

The explosion and development

of ecommerce and other online

services enables the Silver

Surfer generation to stay at

home and deal with almost all

their financing, business and

shopping from an armchair.

How safe are your personal details online? But when you’re online, how

safe are your personal details?

There’s been a massive boom

in online fraud, and you’ll

never be 100% certain you are

safe. But using quality anti-

virus software, keeping your

computer up to date, signing up

to the banks’ security schemes

and ensuring your cards are

protected online are just some

of the simple steps you can take

to be more secure.

Make sure passwords can’t

be easily guessed by using

combinations of letters and

numbers – even change them

regularly, if you need to.

So don’t be put off by

internet horror stories.

You need to stay alert, and

remember, if something seems

too good to be true, or looks a

bit fishy – it probably is.

of Princess Jasmine, played by

Poppy Jhakra (Minnie from

plenty of silliness and laughter

from that renowned Dame

CBeebies’ Alex Winters plays

Aladdin’s endearing brother

Wishee Washee, and Splash

FM’s Anna Bingham returns

And, of course, no

pantomime would be complete

without a dastardly villain

to boo and hiss. This year’s

baddies will be the expertly

evil Mark Wingett (DC Carver

from The Bill) as Abanazar and

Mark ‘Rhino’ Smith (Gladiators,

Pirates of the Caribbean: On

Stranger Tides).

Aladdin is filled with festive

magic from the original

pantomime story, combined

with the most up-to-date

special effects, a spectacular

flying carpet scene, live music

and sing-along-fun. And don’t

miss the Cave of Wonders,

overflowing with mesmerising

treasures – as well as vibrant

dance routines and a speciality

silk act from Duo Du Cirque.

“There will be audience

participation and lots of laughs

in this new version of Aladdin,”

Paul Hammond told us. “I was

lucky enough to be granted

access to the original script

and production records from

1865, and we’ll recreate some

of those breathtaking original

scenes to make sure this is our

most unusual and extravagant

pantomime yet.”

And the really good news?

We’ve got three family tickets

for you to win. To enter our

prize draw, just answer the

following question:

What is Aladdin’s traditional

mode of transport? Is it:

Aching for England

At just 17, Olive Suffield knew

she would have to leave her job

as a Bourne & Hollingsworth

window dresser. There was

a war on, and her work was

considered ‘non-essential’.

Being one year away from call-

up, and adamant she could

never do drill or salute another

woman, Olive realised she must

take positive action.

On her half day off, she

went to enlist for the Timber

Corps, but after one look at

her 5’2”, seven-stone frame, it

was suggested she would be

better suited to field work. As a

volunteer, she had to wait until

she was 17 1/2 before receiving

her uniform and a rail ticket to

Colchester. The War Agriculture

Office billeted her with a couple

whose own daughter, ‘Ro’, had

inexplicably been sent to work

the land in Hertfordshire.

On the first morning, at

6.30am, Olive met her Gang

outside the hostel where

several stayed. A lorry arrived

to take them to a field where,

simply by observing others, she

learned how to cut hedges with

a billhook. Being brought up

in East London, Olive was not

used to farm activities. She soon

ached in every muscle and had

calloused hands.

“It was nothing like the TV

version.” she told me, “We

dressed for work in dungarees

with bib and braces, not our

best dress uniforms seen on the

posters. We didn’t have much

social life and were far too tired

to go on dates.”

When Ro came back on leave

and met Olive, she applied to

transfer home. They shared

a bedroom and soon became

friends. Because these Land Girls

were contracted out, they were

paid by ‘War Ag’ who were paid

by the farmers.

The next job they had to do

was ditching. The girls worked

from 7am-5.30pm and were

an hour for a 48-hour week –

Olive had to pay 25 shillings

board and lodgings. In summer,

she worked 62-hour weeks

to save for trips home. The

only perk was a weekly ration

of 12 ounces of cheese, and

girls would sometimes hide

cauliflowers under their coats to

take home to their families.

“One farmer became

suspicious,” says Olive,

“and kicked a coat. When

a cauliflower rolled out, he

accused the cheekiest gang

member. She protested, but as

he walked away she muttered

that she hadn’t got hers yet.

“There was a hoeing and

singling sugar beet contest.

I came third and the prize was

five shillings. That was enough to

pay for Ro and me to go to the

pictures, and buy some cigarettes.

Mostly, though, it was just hard

graft. I didn’t use a proper toilet

in two years of land work. We

used hedges, ditches and even

haystacks. Often we’d meet the

Italians in the fields at lunchtime,

and when I gave one a lipstick

for a concert party, he gave me a

Swiss roll.

the soldiers shouted ‘where’s

your horse?’ Later I caught ‘flu

and was off sick for weeks. I also

had rheumatism, and realising it

was considered a valid reason for

to London and a job in the

recently a badge was awarded

in recognition of their valuable

work. Sadly, many did not live

long enough to receive it.

Q. I’ve had what I thought was a little wart on my hand for some time now. It forms a sort of scab which comes off, but then reforms and never quite seems to heal up. the surrounding skin is a little red. What could this be?Miss N. Allen, Shoreham

A. This is likely to be a benign skin lesion which will do you no harm at all, other than being irritating and unsightly. However, it is ALWAYS essential to have any non-healing skin lesions checked out and kept under close surveillance by your GP, who will refer you to a dermatologist if necessary.

Q. My wife and I have received a letter from our GP surgery inviting us for a ‘flu jab. I don’t think I’ve ever had one. Is it really worth it? Mr D. Weston, Worthing

A. You don’t say how old you are, or if you or your wife have any significant health problems. As a general principle, older people, especially those with other health concerns, should seriously consider having this vaccination. People particularly at risk are those with cardio-respiratory disease, diabetics and anyone else, such as healthcare workers who may be exposed to the ‘flu virus. The side effects are generally trivial and serious adverse effects are uncommon. The benefits outweigh the risks for most people in the target groups. ‘Flu is more than just a bad cold and can really knock you off your feet. My advice would be to go ahead.

Dear Dr Sarah…Q. I have recently noticed I am having more difficulty walking for long distances. I am 75 and otherwise in reasonably good health. I develop pain in my lower legs and have to keep stopping to rest before I can carry on. My joints seem fine, and the pain is more in the actual leg itself. What do you suggest?Mr T. Hall, East Preston

A. As with any problem, I’d need a full history and to examine your legs before offering you a diagnosis, but I do wonder whether you might have some circulation problems in your legs. A condition called intermittent claudication can cause the symptoms you describe and is caused by inadequate blood flow. It can be caused by some of the same disease processes that cause stroke and heart attacks – and smokers, diabetics and those with high blood pressure are more at risk. You must see your GP without delay, and he or she can refer you to a vascular surgeon for specialist evaluation.

Dr Sarah Honess trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and moved to Worthing in 2003, where she trained in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care. She now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

Difficult dentures can make life

uncomfortable in a big way.

If you’re a denture wearer,

don’t suffer in silence, says

Paul Cullen, Clinical Dental

I have partial dentures made of

plastic, which break annoyingly

often and feel loose in my mouth.

Is there a better alternative?

Certainly. Try metal ones,

which will clip into place easily

and hold fast. These are usually

made in a horseshoe shape,

which clears the palate and

makes eating a lot more fun.

Some people, however, may find

these are not suitable, so please

check first.

I have a full upper denture

with a metal palate. Although

I was originally advised that

this would be a good choice,

I’m regretting it, because my

dentures have never fitted

properly. Why was I advised to

have this kind?

Every professional has his

own view. I’d say that although

this type of denture is stronger,

it’s just not flexible enough,

so you’ll never get a snug fit.

For strength and flexibility I’d

suggest inserting a metal veneer

into an acrylic denture. It’s

much more comfortable than a

full metal palate.

My Clinical Dental technician

has given me a number of

options. How do I choose the

best?

It’s often useful to take a

look at the guarantees offered.

As a rule of thumb, the more

guarantees, the better the

product.

It’s the one you don’t like to mention

In the last ten years, men and women have become familiar

with the concept of self-examination as an early warning of

possible cancer. With bowel cancer, early symptoms are more

difficult to detect yourself.

There’s now a two-yearly screening scheme for everyone over

60, and kits are sent to those eligible by post automatically. You

will first receive a letter asking if there are any medical reasons

why you cannot take the test – maybe you are already receiving

treatment in that region of your anatomy.

The test is simple, though you do need to read the instructions

carefully and be prepared with loo paper strategically laid out

to ensure hygiene. Two weeks after sending the samples, you

will receive the results. If there is any doubt you will be advised

to see your GP.

You are most at risk if you have a family history of bowel

cancer, eat a diet high in red meat and low in fruit and vegetable,

are overweight and take little exercise. But everyone over 60

should take advantage of this embarrassment-free test.

For more information or if you are 70 or over but would like a

screening kit, call 0800 707 60 60.

There are lots of reasons

why some people find

keeping warm difficult.

If you are elderly or disabled

and unable to move around

easily, you will not be as

warm as someone able to

keep physically active. If you

are on a low income you

may be tempted to turn the

heating down to save money

needed for food and other

bills. Maybe your property is

not well insulated or has an

out-dated heating system.

If any of these apply to

you, contact Warm Front
