Every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this publication is accurate. Nevertheless, limitations exist as regards the reported data. Definitions, collection and reporting methods may vary amongst institutions. Conclusions and comparisons should be made only in conjunction with other assessment methods and with due regard to different organizational structures, goals, priorities and practices.

Change from previous years: All provincial, regional and national averages and ratios are now calculated by adding and dividing the values provided by each institution. In the past, these were calculated by averaging the averages or averaging calculated ratios. The same applies for calculating medians.

1 Previous year's figure counted only PHYSICAL titles. Have revised data gathering process to gather all deduped titles. 2 First Nations University of Canada did not report for 2016-2017. 3 The effect of significant weeding of print journals and microfiche collection.. 4 Grève du personnel de soutien du 15 février au 30 mars 2017, ce qui a pu affecter plusieurs statistiques. 5 Sum of item and check-in records. 6 Large change due to decrease in OA fund expenditure (reduced forward purchases). 7 More funds spent on one time resources in 2016/17, USD exchange a contributing factor. 8 More funds spent on ongoing resources in 2016/17, USD exchange and price increases are contributing factors, 9 More funds spent on Collection support in 2016/17, USD exchange, changing technologies and price increases are contributing factors. 10 Had a budget increase in 2016/17 over 2015/16. 11 Increase in subscription costs combined with the decrease in the value of the Canadian dollar in relation to the US dollar resulted in significant cancellations. 12 Includes document delivery, binding, software, metadata, shelf-ready processing, open access publishing, memberships, evaluations, digitization charges and shipping. Portion of funds reallocated to mitigate the impact of the increased costs for ongoing purchases. 13 2-5: Budget and FTE reporting revised to separate WRHA locations and WRHA supported staff, as these are not part of the University of Manitoba Libraries funding and budget. Some staff were also being erroneously counted in "casual staff" instead of support staff. 14 A substantial amount of money was spent this year to purchase key perpetual access collections to alleviate budget pressures. 15 The increase overall was driven strongly by increases in law serials and a delayed increase on Science Direct, offset by smaller increases in other resource renewals. 16 Primarily decreased due to more GST rebates than in the prior year. 17 Overall increase due to regular cost increases on ongoing resources mixed with one-time spending on perpetual access items. 18 Received significant extra funding so purchased much more electronic content (e.g. Oxford Handbooks, Frontier Life) and several more OTO purchases; new PDA programs (e.g. YBP and Kanopy). 19 Received significant extra funding so subscribed to more electronic content (e.g. OCUL OUP); switched print subscriptions to online. 20 Changed how we identify Collection Support resources (i.e. some previously included in Ongoing Resource Purchases are now Collection Support); budget increase also impacted this category. 21 Increase over previous year is due to an increased amount of one-time year-end money. 22 Rebound from 2015-2016 budget freeze to monograph spending. 23 Improvement in the USD:CAD exchange rate has brought this value back in line with previous years. 24 Reduced expenditure due to the effect of the cancellation of BioMed Central membership. 25 For FY 2016/17, some one-time purchases were charged to ongoing resource accounts. 26 For FY 2016/17, there were some pre-payments of invoices for FY 2017/18. 27 Continuation of a move to the digital. 28 Large increase in one-time resources due to a large purchase of multiple periodical backfiles. 29 Increased spending associated with funds provided by University to offset buying power loss in 2015-16. 30 Decrease associated with improved exchange rate and a number of serials cancellations. 31 Increases associated with annual inflation, CRKN project, move to shelf ready books and increased costs in association membership fees; MacRae Library purchased new security gates. 32 Increase in revenue.

33 One time purchases vary by the year; some years we spend more and some years we spend less. The amounts can vary widely. The figure for 2016-17 is correct. 38 Document delivery costs. 39 Fringe Benefits are included in the Library budget, but are not broken out by type of staff so are not reported in Q3 Salaries and Wages. They have been included in 4.3 Total Library Expenditures. 40 Increase due to New Collective agreement for Librarians meant transition and retroactive pay. 41 Increase due to temporary fills on vacant positions. 42 Increase due to 27 pay periods this fiscal, instead of normal 26. 43 Casual staff decreased due to change in reporting structure in 2016-17. 44 Regular salary increases plus hired for several vacant positions. 45 Across the board there has been reduced spending on student assistants. Most notably this has come with Master's students totals. 46 This year effects a correction in the Support and Casual Staff. In 2014-15 and 2015-16 the FTE for two staff members were being counted in Support, but their wage was being counted in Casual. Only one is currently employed and the FTE and wage is now captured in Casual. 47 This was due to retirements. 48 A subgroup of employees was reclassified from contract to seasonal employees. Their salaries are now included in line 3.2 (support staff) rather than 3.3 (casual staff). 49 Answer for 2015 should have been no. 50 Salary total includes professional librarians and professional staff (M category). 2016 salary did not include the M category professional staff. 53 3.1, 3.3: Institutional wide budget cuts. 54 More of our total Operating funds went towards Materials and Staffing expenses lowering the amount of funds for other expenditures. 55 Includes expenditures related to a major research project. 56 Reflects the impact of an overall budget reduction. 57 First Nations University of Canada did not report for 2016-2017. 58 Large part of the difference is from the art collection purchased last year for $380k. In addition to this, spending was down on support payments made to several program partners. 59 Increase is primarily from increased expenditures in Library acquisitions due to price increases and strategic one-time spending. 60 The other operating expenditures is higher than 2015-16, but it is in alignment 2013-14 and 2014-15. 61 Purchased specialized equipment for the new Technology Sandbox, and replaced aging computers. 62 2015 excludes fringe benefits. 2016 includes fringe benefits. 2017 includes fringe benefits. 63 FB rate lower in 2016-17. 64 Responsibility for University's LMS and video conferencing tool moved to Libraries from ITS. 65 Some wage and operating expenditures are funded by partners. 66 Casual Staff FTE increased due to replacement of some FTE staff with casual staff, as well as increases in staffing for new tasks.

67 5.1-5.6: First Nations University of Canada did not report for 2016-2017. 68 Two staff positions were moved from being counted in the suport staff group to the other professionals group (Programmer, Senior Analyst). 69 Hired an additional professional to support the new Technology Program. 70 There was an error in last year's figure, due to 4 systems technicians excluded from the count. The correct figure for 2014-15 should have been 73. In 2016-17, a technician was added to support the Technology program; in addition, a subgroup of employees was reclassified from contract to seasonal, and is now included in the support staff figure as well. 71 A subgroup of employees was reclassified, from contract to seasonal, and is now included in the support staff figure. 74 FTE numbers for 2015-16 for Kellogg and Killam were not accurate. Kellogg should have been 9.75, Killam should have been 55.32 5.5 increase due to additional casual hours at MacRae Library. 75 5.3, 5.5: Institutional wide budget cuts. 76 Some FTEs are devoted to services provided to partners. 77 10.1-10.3: These numbers are from our official 2016 Fall census date, as reported to Universities Canada. We use the Statistics Canada FTE formula: FT + (PT/3.5). 78 Fall census 2016. FT + PT/3.5. Does not include Non-Degree. 79 Fall census 2016. FT + PT/3.5. Includes Post Grad Clinical. 80 Value verified by Institutional Analysis & Research 81 10.1, 10. 3: Enrollment change and increase in part-time online enrollment. 82 Error in keying - change has been made. 83 Enrollment declined.

1 Library Manages Special Collections but not Archives 2 The expenditure includes additional project staffing. 3 The previous year's figure was likely a typo - our records indicate it should have been 90602. 4 The reported 2015-2016 value reported is in error. The value should be $709,545. The 2016-2017 expenditure represents a 6% increase versus the corrected value. The change 2015-2016 versus 2014-2015 represents a 13% decline which was due to decreased salary and benefit costs due to retirements. 5 Last year's number s/b 4795 2.1 Total Number of digital objects number for 2015-16 should be 124238. Counts were revised to improve accuracy in reporting. 6 Previously unable to extract some of these expenditures from E 2.1 (Expenditures and Collections, line 2.1, one-time resource purchases). 7 Grève du personnel de soutien du 15 février au 30 mars 2017, ce qui a pu affecter plusieurs statistiques. 8 Expenditure includes collections acquisitions only. Excludes salaries and wages. 9 Only special collections are managed by the libraries at UdeM. 10 Increase in amount of material added to collection 11 Costs lower than previous year due to a decrease in the number of grants received to hire students 12 1.2, 1.3: Budget cuts 13 The archives increase is correct: largely due to an acquisition from a publisher (Goose Lane), along with a number of other additions. 16 NRC no longer does linear metre counts 17 Increase of 15% may not be accurate due to migration to Islandora. Changed report method in acquiring this stat. 2.3.1 # of articles - Increase due to SFU\'s OA policy in February 2017 and some 2016 IR recruitment efforts would account for increase in article deposits to Summit. 18 2.2-2.3.3: We probably had some new uploads into DSpace the previous year. The first # is for all of UVicSpace. We brought in a lot of content from 2 of units : one centre and another Institute on campus. 19 Metadata for entries in the repository was cleaned up and entries re-categorized, prior to the implementation of an upgraded institutional repository. 20 Project completed to add all University of Calgary thesis records to the repository and to enable requests for legacy theses through the repository, prior to the implementation of an upgraded institutional repository. 21 Several legacy platforms were moved away from in digital collections over the previous year. This likely affected file count reporting substantially. 22 Increase is due to the number of files added to the institutional repository. 23 The method of reporting for Scolars GeoPortal has changed. This year, we're submitting the total size of all files submitted to the service, wheras previously we were reporting the size of a directory on the application server, which had been highly processed by the system. We believe that this new number is better aligned with the spirit of the CARL statistics. This change has resulted in a ~10.5 GB increase over last year's number. Additionally, we have bulk ingested a large image collection into the Atrium IR, increasing this value above the expected growth rate. 24 Slight decrease as a result of metadata cleanup work that reclassified 62 items previously categorized as articles. These items are now represented in ET/DC Q2.3.3 as journals. 25 Verified data. Increase due to continued growth of the ETD collection in the Atrium IR. 26 2.3.1, 2.3.2: Last year's numbers for theses and articles were not accurate. Some categories were misapplied to the Theses category rather than the Articles category 27 2.1, 2.2: Discussion on how to count GIS data types still ongoing with the CARL listserv and OCUL. These numbers will likely be revised.

28 This includes three collections: Labatt Historic Collection: A Canadian Story (https://labattheritage.lib.uwo.ca/), Western Archives Historypin Collection (https://www.historypin.org/en/person/47683), and Scholarship@Western (https://ir.lib.uwo.ca/) 29 Note that this represents only the size of the files in the digital repository. 30 We do believe that this is correct. We have had numerous very large digital projects over the last twelve months. We have a very large newspaper project hosted at Uwindsor which accounts for a large portion of this. 31 Although the number of articles has in the institutional repository is lower than last year, I believe that this is a more accurate count. 32 Numbers are correct. 33 2016 should have been 15.03. 2017 figures are correct. Additional scanner purchased and increased output by scanning team. 34 Expanded Scholarly Communication team did major outreach in 2017. Received multiple deposits. 35 2015 and 2016 numbers should have been 820 and 885. 36 Nouveau mode de calcul des objets numériques. 37 Conséquence du 2.1. 38 Includes total number of digital objects in our archives catalogue. 39 This represents the total number of digital objects that reside in the DAI. 40 2016-17 total now includes all items in the NRC publicly available digital repository. 41 Other items are included in total reported for the NRC publicly available digital repository. 42 2015/16 data should be a 'No' as well. 43 3.2.1, 3.2.2: The stats from 2016-2107 are correct; however 2015-2016 need to be amended. There are only 6 grants from 2015-2016, and the total is $109,817. 44 The increase in the number of grants awarded reflects the revised criteria for the Open Access Authors Fund that limited the maximum amount of funding per successful application. 45 Awards were capped at $500 each in 2016/17. 46 Funds expended last year were for deposits that weren't all used. Because of that, less funds were allocated for deposits this year. 47 UT offers Dataverse for research data storage. 48 This percentage was obtained by dividing the total amount of funds awarded to researches for open access journal publishing fees on line T 3.2.2 to the total materials expenditures on line E 2.4. However, author's fees are not included in reporting of collections expenditures. 49 Error in keying - down due to decrease in funding. 50 Confirmed with Librarian that 100% of funds are dedicated to open access publishing.

Endnotes to Use, Facilities and Services Questionnaire Notes finales du questionnaire sur l'utilisation, installations et services

1 1.1, 1.2, 1.3: Decrease due to: In previous years reported use of all e-resources with COUNTER stats available. This year have reported as per definition 1. Electronic Resources: CRKN, Project Muse, Psych info and Business Source Complete. 2 Resources include: PsycINFO, Project MUSE, Business Source Complete, Alexander Street Press, ARTstor, Web Of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, MYiLibrary, Proquest Historical Newspapers, Periodicals Archive and Periodicals Index, House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, ProQuest Historical Newspapers, MathSciNet, Cambridge Journals Online. 3 Counter stats do not count searches in Primo, our discovery layer. Elsevier ScienceDirect is no longer creating database reports. Several sources appear to no longer be reporting federated searches 4 2-3: Our Management Library was closed for significant renovations for a large portion of the year, and staffing model changes led to gate count statistics being occasionally unreported in some locations. 5 Includes six resources: Oxford, Project Muse, Taylor&Francis, Elsevier,Sage and Wiley. Two resources were cancelled and are no longer included: Springer and Cambridge. 6 This field no longer reported on COUNTER 4 7 2016 calendar year; includes psycINFO & Project Muse. Ovid (psycINFO) overreported their usage stats in 2015. Correct usage total for psycINFO in 2015 was 58,673. 8 2016 calendar year; includes Project Muse, CRKN (ACS, CAIRN, Cambridge, Elsevier, Erudit, IOP, JSTOR, NRC, Oxford, RSC, Sage, Springer, T&F, Wiley) 9 Decrease reflects emphasis on electronic material resulting in decreased circulation of physical material. Also excludes 282 Special Collections in-house circulations. Although not included in the total, in 2016/17, we recorded 4714 files/items retrieved from the archival collection (not catalogued in Sierra). Of these, approx. 39% were used by library patrons in person, based on the means of access recorded for the 799 users accessing this material. The remainder of the material was used by staff to respond to reference enquiries, including scanning or copying items for remote users. A portion of this total includes Special Collections material signed out to patrons without a library card (367 items). Please note that there was an error in the 2015/16 stats. The number reported, 983, reflected the number of users; there were in fact 8375 files/items. 10 Our session data cannot be reliably interpreted, so it is not included. 11 Our search data cannot be reliably interpreted, so it is not included. 12 Includes data from Project MUSE, Business Source Complete and the following CRKN resources: American Chemical Society, Cairn, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Erudit, Institute of Physics, NRC Research Press, Oxford University Press, Royal Society of Chemistry, Sage, Springer, Taylor & Francis and Wiley-Blackwell 13 Guelph included equipment and group study room key circulations in previous values. Policy changes have removed group study room key circulations from this value (~33K). This in addition to the usual decline in print circulations account for this decline. 14 1.2 and 1.3. RESOURCES INCLUDE: Adam Matthew Digital; Alexander Street Press (includes, among other titles, Classical Music Library and Oral History Online); American Chemical Society; CAIRN; Cambridge Journals online; Ebscohost Business Source Complete; Elsiver Sicence Direct; Elsevier Scopus; Erudit; Gale Cengage Learning; Times Digital Archive; InteLex Past Masters; MathSciNet (American Mathematical Society); IOP; JSTOR; Micromedia ProQuest Historical Newspapers; NRC Research Papers; Oxford UP; PsycInfo; RSC; SAGE; SpringerLink; T&F; Thomson Reuters, Web of Knowledge, Derwent Innovations Index; Thomson Reuters, Web of Knowledge, Zoological Record; Thomson Reuters, Web of Science; Wiley 15 This number was derived in the same way as it was last year. The change is due in part to improved search functionality on our website following a redesign in 2016-17, and also as a result of changes and possibly anomalies in the way our vendors collect data about searches. We have observed differences in the searches reported by vendors and what we are able to track using Google Analytics. We've also observed that some numbers may be inflated by searches being counted in multiple platforms from a single provider. We would like to stay with our reported number for this year rather than finding a new way to derive it. We will review our method of obtaining this number for next year, and hope to work with our OCUL collaborative future partners to find a shared approach to deriving it. 16 Represents full-text article requests (COUNTER JR1) for selected publishers in the calendar year 2016. List of vendors included in question 18: AIP, American Chemical Society, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, IEEE, Institute of Physics, JAMA, JSTOR, LWW, Nature, Oxford University Press, Royal Society of Chemistry, Sage,

The only numbers we have for this section are from vendors who haven’t updated their COUNTER reporting in that time and are therefore not COUNTER compliant. We feel that any number provided in this question would be meaningless and possibly deceptive to the consumers of this report. 18 Circulation has decreased across all libraries at Western. 19 Last year's number was low due to reporting difficulties. 20 Last year s/b 212,274. 21 This figure is no longer available in the COUNTER 4 reports. 22 a) List of resources for searches: Alexander Street Press ,Theatre in Video; Adam Matthew Digital Collection; Alexander Street Press Classical Scores Library; American Chemical Society, Web Editions; American Mathematical Society, MathSciNet; Business Source Complete; Elsevier, Science Direct; Elsevier, Scopus; Gale Cengage Learning, Eighteenth Century Collections Online; Gibson Library Connections, Canadian Publishers Collection; JSTOR Archive, 8 Collections, 2011-2014 (Arts & Sciences 1-7 & Life Sciences); NRC Research Press; Project MUSE; Taylor & Francis, Journals Online; ProQuest, Canada's Heritage Globe & Mail, 1844+; ProQuest, Historical Newspapers; ProQuest, Periodicals Archive Online; PsychInfo; Royal Society of Chemistry; Alexander Street Press Core Collections; Sage Publications, Premier All-Access; Swets (ALJC), ALPSP Journals Collection; Thomson Reuters, Web of Knowledge, Biosis Citation Index; Thomson Reuters, Web of Knowledge, Journal Citation Reports; Thomson Reuters, Web of Knowledge, Web of Science; Wiley-Blackwell Electronic Journals" #1.2 b) Federated and automated searches nearly doubled in the EBSCO databases (PsyCinfo, Project MUSE and Business Source Complete). #1.2 c)For the Royal Society for Chemistry, DB 1 was used for the number of searches (115 searches), to conform with BCI reporting guidelines. Searches across the sample also declined. Full text downloads increased between 2015/16 and 2016/17. This increase can be associated with higher than usual usage of two CRKN packages in September and October of 2016. 29 Number of loans decreasing due to increased use of electronic products. 30 Stats from ALMA only - doesn't include any other manual statistics that may have been otherwise recorded. 31 Reporting for: Searches, Project Muise,Psychinfo, Business Source Premier, PAO, JSTOR, NRC REsearch Press, ACS, PQ Historical Newspapers (X4), Scopus, Adam Matthews, Alexander Street Press, Ecco. 32 Discovered an error in data collection in 2015-16 that resulted in some usage being counted twice. 2016-17 figures are correct, and corrected figures for 2015-16 can be provided. Reporting for: Project Muse, Business Source Premier, SpringerLINK, Periodicals Archive Online,JSTOR, Oxford Journals, Cambridge Journals, NRC Research Press Journals, Institute of Physics, Taylor & Francis, Wiley American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, PQ Historical Newspapers (X4), SAGE, Science Direct, Times Digital Archives. 33 1.1, 1.2: Ces données sont tirées de la base de données Amicus seulement. 34 Usage statistics for Business Source Complete provided as an example. 35 3.1, 3.2: Increase due to increase in programming in both the Student Learning and Research Commons areas. 36 Decrease in reference questions due to reduction in staffing hours. Numbers are down in all three Libraries. 37 Turnstile count was lower as during 2016/17 one library was completely closed and one partially closed for renovations. 38 3.1, 3.2: Reflects the ongoing trend towards fewer formal library presentations being requested by teaching faculty. 39 Monitoring the use of the LibAnswers reference platform to confirm that statistics reporting is being handled consistently across the system. 40 Does not include Luther College Library or Campion College Library. 41 The number includes 3,514 in-office consultations. 42 There was an error in the 2015/16 count. It should have been reported as 1,400,652 rather than 1,430,653. 43 Gate count value for 2015-16 revised to 1,504,020. 2015-2016 data erroneously entered as \"1346072\" due to an automated tabulation cell reference range error during a leap year. 44 Decrease due to the move to a single service desk model in the main Arts & Sciences library. 45 3.2, 3.3: Move from large in-class presentations to individual support through reference transactions 46 The gate count total reflects traffic from some but not all library locations within the University of Toronto Libraries system. Part of the increase is attributed to the reporting of locations that did not report gate counts in the past. 47 The decline in Reference transactions can be attributed to several factors. With the LibAnswers platform we have populated an FAQ which provides patrons with immediate responses to recurring questions without the need to consult a library staff member. Other tools such as LibGuides are being used to create research guides that provide 24/7 access to subject specific and class/assignment specific information in support of patron "self-service" options. Librarians are encouraging group consultations when students are involved in group projects and teams and this has reduced the number of individual consultations. The increase in instruction participation may also mean that students received in-class support that enabled them to move forward with their assignments and research without additional reference assistance. Librarians have also been proactive in providing support for class assignments as opportunities arise. 48 One of the gate counters at Davis was down until October 2016. 49 Last year we erroneously reported 10,904 participants in group presentations, when we actually had 15,567; this is not very different from this year's 15,612.

50 More careful recording of reference questions was done this year using a paper form at all service desks. 51 The number of seats has decreased slightly because it does include the café in the library or a computer lab that is no longer under the control of the library. This number more accurately reflects the numbers that are within the definition of seats outlined by CARL. 52 Last year s/b 34,645. 53 We experienced an eight-fold increase in the number of participants in Library tours, as well as an increase in information literacy subject-based workshops. 54 There was an error in the figures for 2015-16 and 2014-15 (the Librarian consultations were omitted from number of reference transactions). The correct figures are 24,491 for 2015-16 and 24,944 for 2014-15. 55 Number unavailable due to motion sensor malfunction from June to February, when we relocated the library entrance temporarily for the Webster Library renovation. 56 New seating added as part of the Webster Library renovation project. 57 3.1, 3.2, 3.3: 2017 changed measurement approach. 58 Fewer questions being asked at service points. 59 Count statistics no longer available for Law Library and Kellogg Library. 60 Decrease due to renovations at MacRae Library. 61 3.3, 4.1.1, 4.1.3, 4.2, 4.2.2, 4.2.3: Unable to provide reason for discrepancy. 62 Addition of Access Services reference questions. We have fewer Journal titles from which to lend copies. 66 Our electronic holdings have changed due to budget cuts over the past year. We have fewer Journal titles from which to lend copies. 67 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.3: The numbers include requests from OCLC. They were not included in last year's numbers. 68 Total VDX + OCLC (VDX=5615; OCLC=4371). Unfilled OCLC requests are not entered in VDX system. 69 Our interlibrary loan borrowing numbers have decreased significantly but we believe this to be accurate. We believe the change is due to better control over our e-resources. However, there was some staff changes so some small difference may be attributed to those changes. 70 A large part of collection was in offsite storage. We lent items from offsite storage to BCI institutions only, or to non-BCI institutions when we were the only location with the item. 71 Figure down due to calculation error in lending stats in 2014-15 (number reported should have been 24,294) and 2015-16 (number reported should have been 22,237). 72 Includes 524 copies and 225 loans filled in house for our own patrons. 73 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3, 4.2.4: ILL usage has declined steadily over the last 10 years. Users are finding more resources on-line and there seems to be a drop in awareness of the service. 74 Reflects the impact of cancellations and the promotion of Document Delivery services to meet the information needs of faculty and students. 75 4.2.1, 4.2.3: Our electronic holdings have changed due to budget cuts over the past year. We are requesting more Journal articles from outside institutions. 76 Total number of requests (5898) less the internal completed requests (823) = 5075. 77 Our ILL staff indicate that overall requests have decreased across Ontario due to availability of material online or locally. Requests are filled at the same rate as in previous years. 78 Offre de PEB gratuit à partir de mai 2016. 79 All other totals do not include requests filled in house (only for and by other institutions). 80 Attributable to factors such as new research areas, a static print collection, and access to a federated catalogue exposing users to content beyond NRC collection.
