Principal’s Report
Dear Parents & Carers, Semester 1 Student Reports are Coming Home on Monday!
All teachers and the executive staff are currently finalising the student reports that will be sent home next
Monday 17 June in Week 8.
The information provided on the front page of the report is a very
important guide describing how well a student is achieving. I strongly
encourage you to read this page first when you receive the report. It is
important for you to understand that if your child receives the Sound
achievement level in any of the six areas of the report it means that
he/she is achieving everything expected for the grade level at this
point in the year. You can be well satisfied with this level and then
provide further encouragement and support to try and extend the
achievement level to High or Outstanding before the end of the year.
If your child receives a Basic achievement level it means he/she is behind the expected grade level in that
area. If a Limited level of achievement is marked it means your child is well behind the grade level and is
experiencing great difficulty in that area and that he/she is receiving support through an Individual Education
Plan.
It’s Interview time in Weeks 8 & 9! To assist you to get the most from the Parent Teacher Interviews occurring for all classes during the next two
weeks I am repeating last week’s article about being prepared for the interview, by considering what it is you
want to find out about your child’s progress and then working with the teacher to plan for continued
improvements. You may find the following suggested questions useful. In addition please refer to the excellent
article by Parenting Ideas Educator Michael Grose. www.parentingideas.com.au in last week’s newsletter.
General Behaviour (Social, Attitudinal, Learning)
1. How does my child act in the classroom & other learning environments?
2. How does he/she approach learning activities?
3. What sort of learner is he/she?
4. What is his/her attitude to classroom & playground activities, other children and teachers?
5. Does he/she have friends? If not, is it a problem?
6. How does my child respond to tasks involving responsibility and trust? If his/her response is
unsatisfactory, how can we help him/her?
English & Mathematics
1. How is my child performing in the areas of Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening (English) and in the
areas of Number, Patterns & Algebra, Data, Measurement, Space & Geometry and Working
Mathematically (Mathematics)?
2. Where does he/she rate in relation to achieving year or stage expectations?
3. Where does he/she rate in relation the rest of the class?
4. Is he/she performing to your expectations?
5. What are his/her strengths or areas for concern?

Something to help us deal with traffic issues around schools – a message from the NRMA NRMA Motoring & Services – Keep School Zones Safe Survey
NRMA Motoring & Services has recently launched its “Keep School Zones Safe”
survey. The purpose of this survey is to obtain information on the number of 40
km/h school zone signs and road markings that are faded or obscured by trees or
poles.
I would like to encourage you to participate in this short internet based survey to help us to improve safety
around schools.
The survey contains just six questions and allows respondents to upload photos of the signs and other safety
features at their school zone.

As a background, school zone signs were first installed in NSW over twenty years ago and many signs are now
well past their use by date.
In 2009 NRMA successfully campaigned for the standard yellow school zone sign colour to be upgraded to a
much brighter fluorescent yellow green. This colour really stands out and can be seen from twice as far away as
the standard yellow signs.
The NSW government has committed to upgrading all faded signs and the feedback from this survey will
provide NRMA with vital information which will aid us in ensuring that the upgrading of all faded school zone
signs is completed so that we can KEEP SCHOOL ZONES SAFE.

Important Reminders Parents of children in Years 3 & 4 are reminded that places in the Stage 2 Camp are filling fast. There
are some places still available for families who nominate to attend by returning the permission note and
deposit before the end of this term. Don’t miss this great opportunity. Any enquiries can be directed to
Mr Granger.

The Y3-6 Assembly will be held tomorrow Friday 14 June at 11.30am. The draw for the three
shopping voucher incentive prizes for those families who have paid their Voluntary
Contribution will be made at this Assembly. The last assembly for this term will be the K-6 Assembly on Friday 28 June at 11.30am
Congratulations To all students who have displayed ‘personal best’ achievements during the first half of 2013 and who
have gained well deserved recognition in their Semester 1 Student Reports.
We’ve been saying it each week recently, but well deserved congratulations are given to our debaters
who were successful against Canterbury South last Tuesday.

P&C News
P&C meeting
The June P&C meeting was held yesterday. It was so poorly attended that we didn’t have a quorum (enough
attendance to discuss issues and vote on them). This means important decisions will need to be held over to our
next meeting. This meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, 13 August at 7.30pm. There is no July meeting due
to the school holidays.
We have tried to cater for all parents by alternating day and night meetings. We realise that due to work,
family and other commitments the dates and times for P&C meetings may not suit everybody. However, with
approximately 700 families in our school we should be able to get more than four parents attending a meeting.
Three of these parents hold positions on the P&C so overall it was a very disheartening morning.
Our P&C is not just about fundraising. It’s about being actively involved in your child’s education, contributing to
decisions that are made about your child’s school and building a sense of community. We really want to hear
your opinion. In the coming months we will be looking at ways parents can access information and give feedback
via the web and possibly a mobile phone app. Stay tuned!
Planning for Fathers Matter Breakfast
Did you enjoy the Mothers Matter breakfast this year? If you did, perhaps you would like to help plan our
Fathers Matter event that will be held at the end of August. Maybe you just have an idea or have some
contacts that may be able to donate prizes. The current committee is becoming over-burdened and we really
need your help to plan this event. Big or small – all contributions will be gratefully received. Keep an eye out
for the date of the planning meeting early next term and please come along. You can email the P&C with your

Raincoats are here!
Keep an eye out for the note about ordering raincoats next week. Purchases can be made online in addition to
the traditional way of ordering via an order form. Samples will be available for viewing next week.

Classroom Achievement Award – 3 winners
Competition is heating up between classes to win the end of semester prize for the class who has had the most
bankers each week. Congratulations to KJ, 2/3M and 4/5SP who were joint winners of the classroom
achievement award for this week.
Silver Awards
Parents are most welcome to attend the assembly to see their child receive this very special award. Silver
awards are presented to children when they have received 5 Bronze Awards = 50 tokens. A fantastic effort!

Kindergarten Puppet Show – Macedonian Language Class
The Kindergarten Macedonian Language Group has been learning about the life cycle of a chick and as a result
they created a puppet show to demonstrate the stages in the cycle.

2013 National Chinese Eisteddfod
In May, about 30 students from our school
participated in the 2013 National Chinese
Eisteddfod, which was held at Strathfield Girls
High. The Chinese Eisteddfod is an annual event in
which contestants are required to recite poems. Our
participants were mainly from Kindergarten and
Year 1 and they all tried their best. Our 4-6 year old
team came third in the group competition. Well
done! Congratulations to Ryan Z (2D) and Darren H (1K) who came first and second in their individual
competitions respectively.
ATHLETICS TRACK CARNIVAL YEARS 3-6
Tuesday 25 June, Term 2, Week 9
On Tuesday 25 June 2013, the school will be holding the Athletics Track Carnival at Bexley Oval. Permission
notes need to be signed by parents with any medical details listed and returned to the office money collection
box. Cost for the carnival is $4.50, which needs to be paid by WEDNESDAY 19 JUNE 2013. Children will be
expected to wear school sports uniform, a school hat and sunscreen. All children should bring their recess,
lunch and a bottle of water. The canteen will be available to provide snack food and drinks only. All parents are
invited to attend but must make their own way to the oval. If you wish to take your child home early, please
ensure your inform the student’s roll teacher prior to leaving.
AGE RACES are raced in the age your child is turning in 2013.

Indonesian News
Once again, Years 1-6 students in Bu Carnell’s and Pak Wrathall’s Indonesian language classes
have been working hard on producing their illustrated entries for the state-wide Indonesian
writing competition, Kompetisi Siswa. The annual competition is run by the Modern Languages
Teachers Association (MLTA) and is sponsored by the Australia Indonesia Association (AIA)
in conjunction with the Indonesian Consulate, Sydney. The topics for this year are ‘This is My
Friend’ (Stage 1), ‘My Strange Animal’ (Stage 2) and ‘Introducing My Family’ (Stage 3).
Carlton students have always performed well in the competition and hope to achieve pleasing
results again this year! Semoga sukses!
