5C Natural Disasters Projects

On Thursday 14 November, 5C students worked in 5 groups to create 10 mini projects in class. Each group had

to complete a project about a Natural Disaster and also a mathematics project about graphs. The students were

incredibly industrious and organised themselves with jobs such as computer research, data collection and design

and make. Their Natural Disasters projects were: 2013 NSW bushfires; Typhoon Haiyan; the Japanese tsunami

2011; the Christchurch earthquakes 2011; and the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and destruction of Pompeii in AD79.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition State Final

On the 15 November, 8 Students travelled with Miss Flowers to the ABC centre, in the city to watch Jenna in

the Multicultural State Final Public Speaking Competition.

The day started off with Billy B, Jacinta D, Rayanne H, Natalie H, Cynthia L, Veronica L, Ethan M and Vincent Y

meeting Miss Flowers at Kogarah Station, where we would travel by train, to reach our destination. Once we

arrived at the ABC centre, we were bewildered and amazed with the place. We saw ABC3 being filmed, the

ABC4 news, and a large Doctor Who exhibition.

We proceeded into the large auditorium where we found front seats. We couldn’t wait to see Jenna and the

other spectacular speakers present their speeches. Jenna arrived ready for the games to begin, and was

confident. Mr Cooper later arrived as the speeches began.

I was mesmerised by all the moving speeches. The adjudicators were sitting at the back, and they had a tough

decision to make. Jenna stood up to present her speech about ‘Connecting Communities’. Each of the twelve

speakers stood up and presented their amazing speeches proudly, and confidently based on other topics such as

‘The Same, but different’ or ‘Asylum Seekers’.

There was a little intermission, and then the hardest bit of all was the anticipated impromptu speech. The topic

was ‘The Good Life’. One by one, the speakers rose from their seats to present their impromptu. They all did a

fantastic job, especially Jenna.

After all the speeches were performed, it was the moment of truth. Who was going to win the State Final? The

Adjudicators walked to the stand. They spoke about the day, and gave the speakers some great feedback. They

were impressed with the quality of the speeches.

Finally they announced the winner of this year’s competition. It was a student from Alexandria Park School.

That speaker was fabulous and so was Jenna. She did not win, but she will always be a winner in our eyes.

We ended off the day as we went to grab a snack, and head back to school. We certainly gained skills, and

benefited from this day.

This was a wonderful day we will not forget, and we were pleased we had the opportunity to see Jenna

performing at her best. We would like to thank Miss Flowers for organising this excursion, and congratulate

Jenna on her great achievement! By Rayanne H and Natalie H.

Celebrating Performing Arts

On Tuesday evening, Miss Rasmussen had the pleasure in attending the “Forever Young” concert at Town Hall. It

was a celebration of Performing Arts in Sydney Public Schools. The concert featured a combined primary choir

of 250 voices; the Sydney Public School Orchestra; Symphonia Jubilate and the Sydney Public School Concert

Band.

International entertainers, Helen Zerefos OAM and Kamahl joined the students in performing this light-

hearted and joyous concert.

Dr Phil Lambert, Director, ACARA and Murat Dizdar, Executive Director, Public Schools, presented awards to

teachers who have supported Performing Arts within Sydney Region over many years as acknowledgement for

their contributions and goodwill through providing a variety of opportunities for students to participate in the

Arts.

Language News

On Friday, 15 November, sixteen students from Bu Carnell’s Year 5 Indonesian class and Mrs

Mihajlova’s Stage 3 Macedonian classes went to Martin Place for the Finalists’ Screening of

LinguaFest (a Short Film Competition run by the Modern Language Teachers’ Association).

When we arrived in Martin Place, we saw that

Sunrise was being filmed outside the Channel

7 building. Since we were early, we watched

for a while and even took photos with the

Cash Cow. We then walked to the NSW

Parliament House and had to go through

security! Inside, we went downstairs to a hall

where there was a big movie-sized screen.

Bu Carnell was the MC of the festival. We watched 23 finalist short films (out of over 80

entries) by students in Years 5-10 studying many different languages including French,

Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Macedonian, Hebrew and of course Indonesian.

After the screening, we voted for the People’s Choice Award. Then Patryk and Nathan helped

Bu Carnell announce the winners. Nathan’s job

was to give her the envelopes containing the

winner for each category. The envelopes were

sealed with wax. It was just like the Oscars!

Patryk’s job was to hand out microphones to the

lucky winners so they could talk about their films.

We were hoping to win 3 years in a row but were

still very happy when our Indonesian Film

received the Judge’s High Commendation award!

After that, it was time for lunch and we were

served lots of sandwiches and orange juice. As we

were about to leave, we saw that heavy rain was

pouring down. While we were waiting, we bumped

into Barry O’Farrell (the premier of NSW) and

took a photo with him. Finally, we caught the train

back to Carlton station and walked to school.

What an awesome day!
