  • Getting Started

Your move to Carlyle Place will most likely be different from any of your previous relocations. Downsizing may have never been an issue for you and your family, since most moves are into a larger space.

The first step in the downsizing process is to have a clear idea of how much space you will have in your new home.

Consider using scarfs, socks, towels or small pillows to add an extra level of cushion and support to your boxes.

Schedule a walk through of your new home with the Move Coordinator.

Review the drawn-to-scale floor plan provided by the Marketing Department.

Here are few ways to get started:

After reviewing your floor plan, you now have a better idea of how much room you will have. Now you can start making decisions about what you will and will not bring with you to your new home.

Identify belongings that you know you cannot live without.

Separate items that you would like to give to family members or friends; label these items with the person's name.

Categorize items that will be sold or discarded.

  • Furniture

When selecting furniture for your new home, there are several things to consider. Here are a few things to think about:

Decide which pieces hold a strong sentimental value.

Consider what furniture pieces are used on a regular basis.

When deciding what things to bring to your new home, allow yourself plenty of time to go through your belongings. Sometimes this can be an emotional process.

Pick an appropriate amount of kitchen and dining items based on their function, frequency of use, and amount of space taken up by the item.

Pick a variety of pictures and paintings for your new home.

Box and clearly mark important photos and letters

Consider comfort, durability, and safety of each piece of furniture.

Decide if this is time for new furniture.

Pick out items that will serve a functional purpose.

Functional items include: lamps, step stool, wall clocks, towels, and bedding

Decide which unused articles of clothing will need to be sold, donated, or given to friends.

Recheck items you selected to take with you.

Ask yourself the following questionsDo I have room for these items in my new home?Am I willing to pay to have these items moved?Have I used these items in the past year?

Here are a few things to think about when selecting which items to keep and which one to leave behind:

  • Moving With A Pet

Moving is far worse for pets since most of their lives are limited to the inside of our homes. It is particularly worse for pets that never ventured outside, such as indoor cats. In addition, the removal of your pet's favorite pieces of furniture may disrupt your pet's world. Listed below are ideas and suggestions to help limit the emotional stress your pet may experience on moving day:

Ask a friend to keep your pet on moving day. Moving day is extremely hectic - tape dispensers are loud, doors and windows are left open, and strangers come and go with furnishings. It is best for your pet's mental and physical well being not to be involved on packing or moving day.

If you plan on having your pet stay in your home on move day, try to keep your pet in one room with the door closed. Ask your movers not to load the items in that particular room until everything else is loaded. Be sure to check on your pet often.

    org

Pack your pet's favorite items so they are the first things unpacked in your new home. Something familiar, in a strange environment, will help make your pet feel more comfortable. Be sure to have your pet's regular food and/or litter readily available.

Spend an extra amount of time with your pet. Pets are great at sensing change.

Try to keep your pet on his or her regular routine.

Start your pet off in just a small part of the house with all the necessities close at hand. If all goes well, allow your pet to explore the rest of your home, room by room.

Most pets are interested in exploring the perimeters of their new home. Be sure to keep your pet on its leash to ensure its safety.

  • Local Charities

Helping others through donations offers a tax-deductible reward.

The sale of each donated item through The Salvation Army supports their addiction recovery programs. Your used furniture, clothing, and other household items will enable you to make a tax-deductible contribution that

will benefit the Adult Rehabilitation Centers.

  • Auctions or Estate Sales

Enlist the services of an auction or Estate Sales Representative to decrease the amount of time and effort you would need to devote to the transition process. An Auction or Estate Sales Coordinator will be able to provide a variety of services including:

Value and evaluate all items for sale

Prepare items for the sale; this includes boxing and transporting items if the sale will not be held in your home

Ask people you know for recommendations.

    Inquire about services and fees.

    Ask if they provide appraisals.

    Advertise the sale

Handle the sale with or without you present

Target a timeframe for your sale before you call.

Schedule a tentative date for the sale.

Here are some suggestions for choosing an Estate Sales Coordinator or auction house:

    Try to only use bonded

    Estate Sale Coordinators,

    and check with your loca

    l

    Better Buisness Bureu.

Be objective and unemotional about your belongings

Know what to do with items that do not sell

Target a timeframe for your sale before you call.If possible, try to schedule your sale between the targeted move date into your new home and the date you need to be completely out of your current home. This enables you to change your mind on furniture pieces for your new home.

A list of local Estate Sale and Auction Coordinators are listed below.

Typically, there are no up front costs to you; only a percentage of the gross income from the sale of your belongings.

Most companies provide appraisals in addition to their estate sale or auction services. Ask about the company's experience and fee for appraisals. If the company does not have experience in this area, you can ask them for recommendations on specialized appraisal services.

Scheduling a tentative date for your estate sale will give you a goal to work toward.

  • Planning With A Moving Company

Moving your household possessions and relocating to a new home is one of the most important activities you will undertake. Professional movers provide a valuable service by moving thousands of people to new homes each year. Listed below are some ideas to keep in mind when choosing a moving company and scheduling your move:

Mentally plan dates you would like to move.

Ask people you know for recommendations for a moving company.

    ww

    w.c

    arly

    lepl

    ace.

    org

Contact the moving company of your choice and ask for a preliminary cost estimate.

Make sure to ask about the availability and cost for packing services and supplies.

    Ask about insurance coverage!

Most moving companies are busier during the summer months, on the weekends, and at the beginning and end of each month.

Often family and friends will give unbiased opinions regarding moving companies they have used. Carlyle Place also has a list of local movers which is provided on page 9. A list of out-of-town moving companies is available upon request.

Keep in mind that prices for this type of service has probably risen since the last time you moved.

The option of having someone do all the packing for you is essential. At this stage in your life, it is better to hire assistants for packing arrangements. If you are contemplating asking family or friends to move your belongings, keep in mind moving is a very physical and emotionally draining experience. It is strongly recommended that you hire trained professionals so you, and your loved ones, can enjoy this new chapter in your life.

Professional moves take precautions to ensure your items are handled with care. However, there are times when an item is broken or damaged during a move. Be sure to inquire how the company handles a situation such as this, and the amount of insurance coverage that may be purchased for your belongings.

After Deciding on a Moving Company

If needed, make arrangements for storage facilities.

Schedule your move with the selected moving company.

By scheduling a move date and securing this date with the company, you will have a sense of accomplishment and a goal to reach. From this point on, you can schedule tasks which need to be handled in time blocks of 1-3 hours.

Storage is only recommended if you have a temporary need to store additional belongings. Remember, you are moving forward with your life - not hanging on to the old or going backwards. The two closest storage facilities are listed below.

  • Packing

    Professional Packing Services

Make sure packers know exactly what is to be packed.

Request your belongings to be packed and boxes marked by the room name in your new home.

    ww

    w.c

    arly

    lepl

    ace.

    org

Request an inventory of how many boxes were packed to ensure all boxes are delivered.

Reinforce the bottom of boxes with heavy duty tape.

All items should be clearly marked and identified. If any items are not to be packed be sure to have these items marked "DO NOT PACK" as movers have the tendency to pack everything in their path.

    Packing Yourself

You might be able to collect free boxes in anticipation of the move. To minimize damages, it is highly recommended that you purchase specialized boxes (like wardrobes, dish packs, etc.) If you prefer to recycle boxes from grocery stores, liquor stores, and convenient stores, please follow the recommended tips.

Put heavy items in small boxes; lighter items in large boxes.

Wrap fragile items individually and pack with padding.

Put hardware to furniture into plastic bags and tape bags to each item.

Pack items by intended rooms in your new home.

    Clearly mark each box.

VERY IMPORTANTKeep in mind that moving companies do not insure boxed

items that were not packed by

    them.

Individual residents are encouraged to maintain a "Tenants" Insurance Policy to protect personal property from the time of your move. The following information is often requested by insurance companies in order to prepare your policy:

Fire Protection: Carlyle Place is located in Bibb County, Georgia approximately three miles from a fire station. There are fire hydrants approximately every 300 feet, with each residence no more than 200 feet away. Apartment Residences are contained in a fully sprinkled building constructed of concrete floors, supported on a structural steel frame. Additionally, there are firewalls between every eight (8) apartment homes. Garden Home Residences are single family, single story structures that are standard wood frame construction. All residential units have a heat and smoke detection system, monitored on-site 24 hours a day.

Water Supply: In addition to having domestic water and a separate dedicated "loop," supplied by Bibb County, there are two lakes on the property capable of supplying emergency water to fire station pumping equipment, if necessary.

Emergency Assistance: Each residence is equipped with a two way voice emergency call system. Residents who pull the call cords, located in each bedroom and bathroom, will be connected by voice with an employee who can direct appropriate assistance 24 hours a day.

Maintenance: All residential units are professionally maintained. Regular preventative maintenance services and inspections are performed on heating, air conditioning, electrical, call and alarm systems. In addition, Carlyle Place will maintain doors, windows and roofs to protect against water infiltration.

For insurance purposes, Carlyle Place residences are considered rental units. The only insurance requirement is that the resident be responsible for his/her own personal property and personal liability.
