A t Three O’clock.The questions perplexing Stanway
were these: “ Is there a large forceo f men backing T orre and Juarez? Are they alone In the thing?” And there was only one way to answer them.
As the afternoon slipped by and dusk came down upon them, sweet and warm, through the groves o f orange and o live trees, Teresa sent word to the men’s quarters fo r all, excepting a half dozen o f them, to come to the h ou se .
Those not coming In w ere to remain on guard over the corrals Into which the saddle-horses had been herded, and to serve as sentinels along the border. The guard over Torre and Juarez was doubled; the two men w ere disarmed and assigned to couches upon the opposite side o f the drawing-room.
Doors were fastened, windows lock *), shuttprs drawn, and the hacienda was like an old fortress in time o f siege.
“ I do not anticipate an attack,” Stanw ay smiled into Teresa’s grave face. “ Surely the insurgents, are not looking fo r complications with this country. But w e are taking no chances. I t would take a whole regiment o f them to trouble us here tonight.”
“ But are w e doing right?” she whispered a little fearfu lly . “ I f we gave them the money— it is so small a part o f papa grande’s estate— he would be out o f all danger. And as It Is—•”
“ I t is a bluff o f Torre ’s, pure and simple," he told her. “ I f anything should happen to Senor de la Guerra, Torre and Juarez would not last fifteen minutes w ith your litt le army o f retainers, senorita. They talk big,, both o f them, but I am not afraid.”
But when she had given him her hand and a wan smile by the w ay o f “ Buenas noclies," he was not content until he himself had seen to the watchfulness o f the men stationed here and there throughout the b ig house. And, by the w ay o f final precaution, he saw that another man slept that night at Pedro’s side, in front o f the senorita’s door, and that both men were armed.
H e had not again gone to where Dempton fumed and worried in the library. I t was his thought to leave the law yer to chew upon the cud o f suspicion his own parting words had given him, fo make the night long and uneventful fo r him, so that his trembling little soul might have time fo r thought.
It was late when Teresa heeded his nrging and went to her room. H e le ft her at the foot o f the stairs leading up to her chnmhers; saw Pedro preparing to spend the night at her doorway, and then went to his own room/decided to sleep until the stiller hours of the night came; (hen to superintend in person the watch which was being kept throughout the house.
On his way to the w ing o f the building which had been given over to film, he passed through the drawing-room fo r the last time.
Juarez seemed to be asleep upon his couch. H a lf a dozen o f Gaucho’s Ya- queros, all armed, were scattered about the room, their quick eyes showing how alert was the spirit within them. Torre, sitting at a table idly turning the leaves o f an illustrated book o f poems, rose quickly when

pudent, his words low so that they reached no ears but those he intended to hear. “ Tw enty thousand dollars now, Immediately, o r I g ive you my word as a gentleman that when the sun is up you w ill rush to me, trying to make terms, and I shall then answer you by demanding fifty thousand I”
The .threat in the man’s voice again disturbed Stanway. H e had a feeling which he could not entirely reason down that T o rre meant what he was saying. Then he looked at the half dozen stern-featured, fa ith fu l servants, who served, the D e la Guerra as old subjects served, a beloved sovereign; saw them watchful, armed, eager for an excuse to fling themselves upon their fw o captives; and, frowning at his own fears, he went to his room.
H is windows faced westward and to the south.
H e stood before one o f them which looked to the border, half, ready to expect a rush o f cavalry through the olive trees.
H e saw the' o live trees sway to the little, warm wind from the south; watched his w indow curtains pulsing slow ly like one breathing; noted how the moonlight gilded the ripe fru it upon the orange trees, and, with a last look toward the eastern w ing o f the house, where a 'l it t le balcony jutted out among roses, he jerked down his shade, fastened his window, placed a revolver upon the chair at his side, and went to Wed.
A low, Insistent rapping at his doorway awakened him. ■
Stanway sat up In bed, a sudden shiver o f uneasiness upon him.
“ W ho it is?” he called sharply.“ I t is Lugo, senor. Senor Torre
sends pae w ith a message. It is to come to the drawing-room immediately. H e has something to say to you. H e says it is very important. H e insists you come to him before it is three o ’clock— with in fifteen minutes.”
“ H e has his nerve," muttered Stanway. “ Tell, him to be more exp licit or to go to the devil.”
“ Si, senor.”L u g o . chuckled his approval, aud
hurried aw ay through the still house. Stanway lay back upon his bed and closed his eyes, only to open them quickly to ‘stare Into the darkness o f his room.
He' was remembering those forebodings which had come to him with T o rre’s veiled threats; he was fee lin g an uneasiness which he could uot drive out. Torre had sent fo r him in the middle o f the night—
Asrala ha sat no aronioa. for matches
ana a canntesncit; In the tittle yellow g low he saw that It lacked but ten minutes o f three. H e sprang out o f bed, drew on his clothes hurriedly, aud hastened to the drawing-room.
“ Ah, senor, you are very kind.” T o rre ’s sm ile was fu ll o f mock-politeness. “ T o trouble yourself so at the lightest wish o f a guest is— ”
“ Get down to business i f you have any,” Stanway interrupted bluntly. “ W hat Is It?”
“ I want n word w ith you in private,” Torre answered quietly. The man was fu lly dressed and now rose from tho couch upon which he had been lying. “ There is no objection to the others being in the room, but at least let us stand at the fa r side o f the chamber so that they may not hear.”
“ I f you have anything to say, say It aloud,” Stanway retorted. “ I am tired o f your way o f doing business, Torre. Now , what is it? ”
T orre shrugged.“ Then I shall be silent,” he said
carelessly. “ I think that you are making a mistake, senor.”
W as he? Stanway didn’t know. H e looked about the room. Juarez seemed to be sleeping heavily upon his couch; the vaqueros, seven o f them, sat along the walls or lounged about the room, each man o f them as watchful, his eyes as keen and suspicious as at the beginning o f their v ig il at dusk.
And yet, In spite o f all this security, in spite o f the fact that Stanway and the De la Guerra servants were armed and their two prisoners unarmed, the rancher had the odd fee ling that there was a weakness in his position which he could not see, but
which was very plain to the sm iling Torre. And then his curiosity decided him.
“ Come,” he said a fte r a b r ie f moment. And then again : “ Now , what is it?”
H e had stepped to the fa r corner o f the room, motioning two o f the lounging cowboys out o f earshot. Torre, debonair, his maimer gracefu lly indifferent, stopped at the big mahogany table to ligh t his cigarette at one o f the candles and came to Stanway’s side
“ Thank you, senor,” he said, ids voice very low now, Ills words guarded so that none but the rancher might hear them. “ F o r this is in the way o f a kindness to me, although you do not know that yet.”
“ I t is not meant thnt way, so keep your thanks,” returned Stanway. “ I am waiting.”
“ Bueno. N ow first I want you to remember th is : I am in the position to be the key to the situation, aud you must see that. I f fo r any reason the vaqueros in some sudden fit o f rage should seek to put a violent end to my gay little existence— ” H e shrugged. “ I t would be like a man in a prison cell destroying the key to his liberty, senor.”
“ Go on. Needless to say I don’t understand.”
“ You w ill in a moment.” H e glanced at his watch. “ I t is almost three. Th is you must understand; if such a thought should come intgp the vaqueros’ bloody minds I shall look to you as m y protector.
“ N ow ”— his air, his smile, his very carriage eloquent o f a laughing im-
' pudence, he stepped close to the shuttered window— "now something is going to happen."
Suddenly his hand shot out and a pane fe ll from the window, broken into many pieces, tinkling upon the carpet. Torre put his face to the opening he had so rudely made and called out sharply, a lou d :
“ Aliora, eoiupaneros! S tr ik e !”A revolver flushed into sight in
Stanway’s haud; a revo lver was in the hand o f each vaquero in the room. The air was charged with expectancy.
“ Watch h im !’’ called out Stanway. “ Jerk him back from the w in dow !” , W hile he was speaking ho had struck one o f the candlesticks from the tab le; Gaucho had understood and had Dut on i.the other llirhts. The
room sank m ro s w o t ,darkness.

Two Nights of Shaw ComedyTo Be Given at Our Forest Theatre
During 1917 and 1918 no productions were made by the W estern Drama Society, as a large proportion of the active membership was in the service of the governm ent or associated work o f one kind or another. Accordingly, the first prod u c tion 'to be' made by the society since Tusitala, the Stevenson masque so successfully presented in the summer of 1916, w ill be Bernard Shaw’ s delightfu l com edy, “ Arms and the M an .’ ’
The play will be staged under the direction of H erbert H eron , who for ten years has been prom inent in tlie performances of the Forest Theatre, as author, producer and actor. Mr. H eron ’ s previous Carmel productions include “ T h e Land of H eart’ s D esire,” “ A Po l of Broth,” “ T h e T rap ,” “ Cathleen ni Houlihan,” “ Falstafl,” “ Immortal Fam e,” “ A M idsumm er - N igh t ’ s Dream ,” “ T h e First Poet,” and “ Tusitala.” From his long experience in Forest Theatre and professional directing, Mr. H eron is em inently fitted to produce the com edy of “ Arms, and the M an,” gen erally considered to be Shaw’ s finest work.
A beautiful and elaborate setting has been designed by Daniel W . W illard, who for many seasons has devoted his lim e and manifold talents to the construction of scenes for the open-air productions of Carmel. U nder Mr. W illard ’ s direction
the setting for “ Arms and the M an” has becom e one of charm and distinction, harm onizing with the brilliance of the play and the natural beauty of the Forest Theatre.
A cast of players which has seldom , il ever, been eqalled in Carmel, has been assembled for this production. Each player fits his or her part as if the com edy had been written especially for this group. Urban Cronan as the explosive but genial Petkoff makes his first appearance in the Forest Theatre, although he lias been a resident of the town for some time. M is. K . G Rendtorff, playwright and player of much experience, needs no introduction after her work in Carm el and Stanford; her Madame Petkoff is a delightfu l study. Mrs. G eorge J. Seideneck, wife of the artist, plays the romantic Raina with gen uine charm. M ajor James is Sergius, and a. better Sergius it would be impossible to find. W illiam S. Cooper, one of the charter members of the W estern Drama Society, with a long list of roles to his credit, has the subtle character o f N icola. Frances C. Pudan has perhaps the best role o f her career in the fiery but repressed Louka. Selby Hanna is the Russian officer serving in the Bulgarian army, and H erbert H eron is Captain Bluntschli.
T w o performances will be given. T h e first is tomorrow even ing, the second Saturday even ing, at 8:30.
