Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo

Visitors to California's central coast region may wish to stop at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo. One of the most important heritage sites in the state, this mission encompasses five museums providing historical information about the region as well as beautiful architecture and natural surroundings. The town of Carmel-by-the-Sea offers additional opportunities to explore, as well as a white-sand beach.

Conclusion

Carmel Mission itself served as the headquarters of Father Junipero Serra, who founded nine missions across California. He died there of tuberculosis, and his grave lies under the main altar in the mission's basilica. The current edifice, restored by cabinetmaker Harry Downie, includes walls from the original structure.
