Carmen Copper Plant Visit Last February 9, 2015, our class went to Carmen Copper Corporation Located in Lutopan, Toledo City. We were received in their conference room and we were given an overview of the plant and what they do. Afterwards, we were taken by a bus to see other parts of their plant. There are three pits where they mine copper in the area. The Lutopan Pit, Carmen Pit and Biga Pit. Our first stop was the Lutopan Pit. We were allowed to go out of the bus and take pictures. It was an overwhelming experience for me because I did not expect I could see a view like that in person. Then we were brought to the Assay laboratory. There we were received by their staff and they kindly discussed the process with us. There we saw how copper, silver and gold were separated to be analyzed. We saw actual pure gold which they were able to separate. Then went on the bus again and were shown the other parts of the plant like the Carmen Pit and the area where rocks were dumped for crushing. We were especially amazed at the huge trucks that everyone took pictures with it. Although the day was gloomy and rainy, the plant tour turned out fine. For me the plant was okay but it definitely contained many hazards. The place was muddy but it was understandable given the type of plant and the weather. I was concerned on how the plant would look like at night and how the workers can do their job effectively but I guess there would be huge spotlights and other ways to ensure a safe working environment. I am also concerned on those areas that are already abandoned for mining such as the Lutopan Pit. Maybe they could do something about it that the huge area would not go to waste. By far, this was the best and most enjoyable plant tour for me. Not only did we have fun, we got a greater feel of what it is like to work in the industry which made us excited for the future but most especially, we learned.
