Notes ON THE PROGRAMBy Joseph & Elizabeth Kahn

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL (1685-1759) MessiahRe-Orchestrated for full symphony orchestra by Eugene Goossens (1893-1962)(150 minutes)

Messiah is a collection of biblical extractscompiled as a complement and responseto the story of Christ’s incarnation, deathand resurrection. There are no dramaticcharacters, the soloists adopt a primarilyprophetic voice and the chorus respondsas a kind of universal congregation.

The first part of Messiah deals primarilywith the prophecies of Christ’s birth, mainly from the Book of Isaiah, andmore meditative psalm texts. The textsare optimistic, focusing on redemptionthrough acceptance of a merciful andgentle savior. The actual Christmas storyis told only in the three central numbers:the chorus “For unto us a child is born”;the recitative “There were shepherdsabiding in the fields”; and the chorus“Glory to God,” in which the sopranosoloist serves as “Evangelist” and thechorus as “Mankind” and the “HeavenlyHost.”

Part Two is distinct from the Passion ora-torios in that it does not tell the story ofthe crucifixion but is rather a meditationon Christ’s death and mankind’s need forredemption. Once again, the texts aretaken primarily from the Hebrew Scrip-tures, in which the events of Christ’s sac-rifice are believed to be anticipated. PartTwo ends with the “Hallelujah” chorus, celebrating the redemption of man ratherthan the tragedy of Christ’s death.Equally non-dramatic is Part Three, amusical consideration of the significanceof the resurrection for mankind.

Handel composed Messiah in a little overthree weeks, typically dipping into earliercompositions when it suited his taste andprobably his schedule, “And He shallpurify,” “For unto us a child is born”and “His yoke is easy” were originallyItalian secular cantatas for two voices.Remnants of moribund opera seria stylecan be heard in the da capo aria “Rejoicegreatly,” but the repeat of the first part isby no means exact, driving to an emo-tional and musical climax that ends thearia. Another distinction in this aria isthat Handel notated the ornamentationinstead of allowing the singer carteblanche to improvise, as was the customwith the castrati who dominated theoperatic stage.

Always attentive to matching words andmusic, Handel, like Bach, frequently usedtone painting to accentuate importanttextural elements; note the melisma onthe word “shake” in the bass recitative“Thus saith the Lord” and the twistingchromatic vocal line in the bass aria toportray “The people that walked in dark-ness.” On the other hand, note how dif-ficult it is for the chorus to sing the word“easy” in “His yoke is easy.” The instru-mental “Pastoral Symphony” portraysthe shepherds through the use of thedrone in the bass, representing a simplerural bagpipe and the lilting rhythm oftraditional Italian folk music.

Messiah was commissioned by theLord Lieutenant of Dublin and was an

enormous success at its premiere per-formance in 1742, but it fell flat thesame year in London. Only after it hadbeen revised and presented in concertfor the benefit of the Foundling Hospi-tal in London (which continued tomake over 600 pounds at each of itsannual benefit performances) did it

take off on the way to its current pop-ularity. But nothing boosted the work somuch as its adoption every Christmas bytraditional English civic choral societies,in which “casts of thousands” continueto belt out the choruses that at its pre-miere comprised only 33 instrumentalistsand 32 singers.

Handel’s original modest orchestrationdid not remain pristine for long. Handelhimself had performed it using anenlarged orchestra. Mozart and variousothers have re-orchestrated it for theirown times and orchestral forces. In 1959conductor Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961), nearing the end of his career, decided that he wanted to conduct andrecord Handel’s Messiah one more time, taking advantage of the full force of hisRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra. He hiredconductor and composer EugeneGoossens (1893-1962) for €1,000 (atidy sum at the time) to do the re-orches-tration, explaining reasonably that overthe years Messiah had played to largerand larger houses, and proportionatelylarger forces were needed to push thesound out.

Handel’s original orchestration con-sisted of 2 trumpets, timpani, continuo, and strings (oboes and bassoons addedfor later performances). In Goossens’hands, this became: 3 flutes (piccolo), 4 oboes (English horn), 2 clarinets (bassclarinet), 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, 3 percussionists (includingcymbals), harp, and strings. Goossensalso omitted several movements fromthe original orchestration.

Beecham recorded the new version in1959 with great success (It is still avail-able on CD). But then the story getsmurky. After the conductor’s death, LadyBeecham—the Royal Philharmonic’s for-mer telephone operator who was 57years Beecham’s junior and whom hemarried in 1959—became the guardianof all her husband’s manuscripts and dis-couraged attempts to perform thearranged Messiah or even to allow anexamination of the score. In fact, sheclaimed that Goossens’ work was unac-ceptable to her husband and that he hadbeen obliged to “re-re-orchestrate” ithimself with the help of a member of theorchestra and had actually used “hisown” version for the recording. Thatclaim was, in fact, stated in the insertwhen the recording was reissued on CDin 1992. Finally, in the early 1990s, LadyBeecham sold her husband’s manuscriptcollection to Sheffield University, where itbecame possible to examine the scoreBeecham had used for the recording. Itwas pure Goossens with only a fewminor alterations.

Goossens’ Messiah was not performedagain in Britain until 1999. DCINY pre-sented the Lincoln Center premiere ofthis orchestration on November 27,2011, played by the Distinguished Con-certs Orchestra under the baton ofJonathan Griffith.
