Carnaval is the period before beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar.This year 2021,it begins on Thursday,11th February and finishes on Tuesday, 16th February ( Ash day Eve).

Carnival is a cultural expression that includes music, dance, costumes , masks and performance. It is also an expression of freedom and enjoyment

● Carnival involves public and popular celebrations with massive parades,coloured floats which makes it like a moving and colourful Street party.

● People wear fantastic costumes and gorgeous masks. They dance , sing and play loud music in the Street

Countries where Carnival is famous

RIO DE JANEIROThe world´s largest Carnival is celebrated in Rio de Janeiro, BRAZILAbout 2 million people take part in it. Many people go to Samba School and they belong to different Carnival Bands. They dance in Samba competitions during the Carnival.

veniceIn Venice, in Italy, there are many Carnival boat Parades along the Grand Canal people wear beautiful costumes and masks.

niceIn France ,Carnival is called Le Carnaval or Mardi Gras.

The most famous Carnival Street takes place in Nice.

new orleansIn New Orleans, USA, is celebrated Mardi Gras ( influenced by French tradition).

spainIn Spain, we celebrate Carnival in different cities. The most important are: -Cadiz: there are parades with enormous paper figures. People invent and sing funny songs.-Sta Cruz de Tenerife

englandIn England, people celebrate Carnival in August.In Notting Hill in London, there are many bands in the streets and people sing and dances Calypso.

In Carnival Season, there are a great global food traditions: feijoada, brigadeiros and quindim, caipirinha in Brazil; crepes in France,; Seafood and pasta in Venice; King cake and doughnuts in New Orleans; Filloas in Galicia, Spain.
