  • Final RemarksBY EVAN SHERWOOD, 2015 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

What an amazing year; I cant believe it has already has come and gone! We have accomplished so many amazing things this year. I want to say a big thank you to our advocates, dancers, volunteers, and supporters. $570,561.48 would not have been possible without all your contributions. Thank you for allowing us to achieve a record-breaking year and enabling us to help more patients and families at UNC Childrens than ever before. It is because of every single one of you that our organization continues to grow. I cant wait to see what next year has in store.

I also want to say thank you to our committee members, our new and returning corporate sponsors, our amazing Board of Directors, and, of course, our Executive Board. The Executive Board is made of the 13 most hard working people I know. Thank you for all the time you gave up this year for this organization!

Serving as Executive Director this year has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I have been so honored and blessed to serve in this role this year. I want to thank Liz Goslin and the 2014 Executive Board for allowing me the opportunity.

Im very excited for the 2015-2016 Executive Director, Meagan Barger. She is going to bring such new and innovative ideas; I cant wait to see where she takes the Carolina For The Kids!

Im forever indebted to this organization for providing me the best 4 years at Carolina that I could have ever asked for, giving me with some of my best friends and a cause to get excited about. This cause has grown on me so much since I started at Carolina, and my passion for it surely wont leave me once I graduate. I have seen how one cause can inspire so many people. FTK. 3 letters. 3 words. 1 cause. For The Kids is what it is all about.

Unfortunately the year is coming to a close, but I cannot wait to see where the Carolina For The Kids Foundation goes next. I know the Executive Board and the rest of the CFTK community will build on this year and lead us to new heights we didnt even think were possible.

Forever and Always FTK, Evan Sherwood

    2015 UNCDM by the Numbers

It was another record-breaking year for Carolina For The Kids Foundation. The 17th annual UNC Dance Marathon, held on March 20 and 21, raised a total of $570,561.48, all for the patients and families of UNC Childrens Hospital. This was the second year that the organizations fundraising efforts culminated in over half a million dollars. Executive Director Evan Sherwood said this years total reveal was pure excitement. I was so excited to share with everyone what their hard work had accumulated in, Sherwood said. It was definitely a catharsis. So much time and energy put into the organization by everyone, so it was just special moment for me personally to share with everyone our record-breaking results. Every five minutes of the Marathon is meticulously planned to pack in as much fun activities for dancers as possible, said Heather Gunter, Entertainment Chair. This year, the Entertainment Committee worked to provide more unique and interactive experiences for dancers including the inflatables on Hooker Fields in the afternoon. Its always a tall order trying to entertain and make hundreds of diverse students happy, but Ive really enjoyed being an integral part of planning the Marathon over the last two years, Gunter said. My committee and I worked really hard this year to schedule a good mix of performances to keep dancers engaged and create activities to keep them distracted from the fact that they had been

standing for so many hours. The Operations Committee is responsible for making sure the Marathon runs smoothly, from set up to tear down. Operations Chair Logan Hiers said the most exciting thing is seeing everything finally come together. After spending months planning this 24-hour event, there is a lot of room for error, but we were very successful this year, he said. It makes me so proud to see that the amount of work and time spent planning UNC Dance Marathon worked out in the best possible ways. During the Marathon, it is the job of the Morale Captains to keep energy high at all times, according to Morale & Recruitment Chair Jean Luc Rivera. They dance, shout, scream one year someone did backflips on stage, Rivera said. Essentially they just keep everyone happy and help make the Marathon a great experience. Though the 2015 Marathon is over, CFTKs job is never done. After a whirlwind year for the organization including a name change and the announcement of a $2.5 million, 5 year fundraising commitment to build a new general pediatric clinic there is a lot to look forward to. The next step for the organization I think is to continue to implement the name change and really work to publicize the clinic, Sherwood said. This clinic is so big for us; we need to get the word out and raise money for it so we can help the greatest amount of patients and families possible!

Caroline was admitted for surgery at N.C. Childrens Hospital because of her severe developmental delays. Her mother, who adopted her as a baby, accompanied her. The family does their best to meet the girls special needs, but their finances are tight. One parent always stays at home with their 8-year-old daughter, so both parents cannot work. The For the Kids Fund provided the family with meal tickets, making for a more comfortable stay in the hospital while the daughter recovered.

For the third year in a row, Coastal Federal Credit Union served as the presenting partner for the 2015 UNC Dance Marathon. Presenting partners are the largest financial sponsors of the event, granting them special access to the organizations events, said Corporate Marketing Chair Christina Lewis. We really aim to incorporate them within our organization, and promote them during events, she said. Creighton Blackwell is the Vice President of Branch Networks and Community Engagement for CFCU, and is the main contact between CFTK and CFCU. He said the motto in the credit union industry is people helping people. Being the credit union for the students at UNC, we were looking for ways to support the mantra, he said. Being an alumni, I always remembered what a great event Dance Marathon was and felt it was a natural partnership!

Lewis said working with CFCU has been a great experience and that shes learned a lot about corporate marketing from working with them. They are constant supporters of our organization, attending all of our events from DRW to the Benefit Reception, to obviously being at the Marathon, Lewis said. We are lucky to have their support, and I am excited to watch how this relationship continues to grow! Blackwell said Coastal is committed to providing its members and its community with the financial services they need, when and where they need them. UNC, its students, these kids, these families [and] our community all need this support and we are committed to be there, he said. I hope to see this partnership with CFTK and Dance Marathon grow bigger and better in the futurewe will all share in this success!
