CMM TANAUAN 2017

Greetings CMM friends,

I am overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation for Tanauan mission. My wife and I are coordinating the Philippine American Association of North Carolina sponsored Carolina Medical Mission (CMM) 2017.

This is a monumental task for us. This is our first experience at coordinating a medical mission. We are proud to bring CMM to our hometown of Tanauan, Batangas.

I am blessed to be surrounded with friends whose lives are dedicated to helping the poor members of our society. Among these are the exemplary medical team of volunteers led by Dr. Art de Leon and Dr. Fred Ng.

The support of the Carolina Medical Mission team under the leadership of Emma Dempsey, Anita Ng and Dr. Rosemary de Leon has been great. I am honored to have the support of my fellow PAANC board members, the Fatima Rosary Prayer group led by Lita Castillo, Couples For Christ brothers and sisters, and other supporters from the Triangle area.

I just recently arrived from the Philippines where I was finalizing some aspects of the mission. I secured the medical and surgical venues for CMM 2017. I also arranged local transport and inspected the CMM team hotel. I hope and pray that this venture will be successful in improving the health of my marginalized kababayan in Tanauan.

I am privileged to be a part of this undertaking. May God Bless us all.

See you in Tanauan!

FEELING SMALL

"What do the Grand Canyon, Sistine Chapel, and gazing at distant stars all have in common? A new study finds that ‘feeling small’ in the face of something much larger than ourselves makes us more generous and more helpful." What CMM does for our less fortunate kababayan is definitely much larger than ourselves. CMM has been thriving for the past 24 years because of the generosity and partnership of our sponsors, donors, volunteers and friends.

This is the year of the “unprecedented.“

The 2017 Mission to Tanauan, Batangas, has an unprecedented number of US Volunteers, 52 members so far, totaling 78 volunteers including the Philippine volunteers. The Tanauan, Batangas mission, led by the current Board Chairman of PAANC, Ed Panganiban, is in its final stages of planning and fundraising. The large number of volunteers could also be attributed to the large following that Ed has as a resident and active member of the Durham Filipino community.

Another “unprecedented” event was the Barrio Fiesta which was held Saturday, September 17th at the Jacoba Hall, St Francis of Asssi . The celebration was a huge success with an unprecedented number in attendance. Friends and family all had a lovely time sharing food, fun and fellowship. The dedication and hard work of the vast number of CMM volunteers were definitely responsible for this success.

Maya Angelou once said, ”I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”

CMM has certainly facilitated the liberation of many souls. Thegenerosity of the CMM partners and friends is another unprecedented phenomenon.

TYPHOON NONA RELIEFDear Members of PAANC, CMM and Friends: Greetings of God's Peace and Love! Typhoon Nona hit our town very badly last December 14 & 15, 2015. I was really surprised by your immediate response to support our needs. Thank you very much for your generous donation to the victims of Typhoon Nona. We were able to help 32 families, mainly for the construction of their new homes. The assistance ranged from P5,000 to P10,000 for the construction materials. The seminary school received P50,000 for the repair of the roof and ceilings of our clergy house.

My sincerest gratitude for your generosity and my heart is filled with joy for your concerns..

Gratefully yours in Christ,Rev. Fr. Nestor AdaliaVicar-General, Diocese of Calapan, Mindoro

CMM GOOD NEWS!Congratulations to Romina Ng, MD, a volunteer in CMM Paranaque 2010. Romina recently passed the Philippine Medical Board Exam. She is the daughter of the late Robert Ng, MD† & Mignonne Ng, MD, a long-time CMM volunteer pediatrician.

CMM BARRIO FIESTA The fiesta is close to the heart of many Filipinos. A communityor barrio unites to celebrate a special event or joyful occasion--a patron saint, a good harvest, or a successful venture. The CMM Barrio Fiesta is a celebration of mission’s past, present, and future. It is a time for everyone to enjoy without regard to one’s social and economic status nor religious affiliation. We unite together to foster a continuing interest and appreciation of Filipino values and tradition, cultural and social norms, thus developing our common identity.

It is also an opportunity to give thanks to the many donors and volunteers who have allowed CMM to continue to serve our brothers and sisters in need in the Philippines.

It’s our kickstart to CMM 2017, a way to get the momentum rolling towards our mission in Tanauan, Batangas and beyond.

We gathered on Saturday, September 17th at the Jacoba Hallat St Francis Catholic Church. Our little neighborhood party attracted friends near and far. The turn-out was greater thanexpected. It was wonderful to reunite with many old friends of CMM and make many new friends. Attendees weretreated to great food, music, dance, and camaraderie.

The Barrio Fiesta again demonstrates the power of teamwork. The different Filipino regional dishes were prepared and donated by CMM family & friends. We commend the Durham Filipino group for spearheading this great event. Special thanks and appreciation to CMM volunteer Lita Castillo for inviting and involving over a hundred Durham Fil-Am guests. We are grateful for everyone who made the event a success.

With the monetary donations of $3,707 and net ticket sales of $1,793, the Barrio Fiesta raised a total of $5500 for CMM Tanauan 2017.

CMM challenges everyone to nurture within him/her the spirit of helping one another (damayan) with respect and dignity.
