CAROLINA LACROSSE HISTORY The Humble Beginnings of a Vaunted Program Lacrosse, a sport invented by the American Indians, was first introduced at the University of North Carolina in 1937 on a club team basis. The first Carolina teams in the late 1930s used the football team’s discarded helmets and cleats until team members could afford to buy their own helmets, gloves and sticks. The team played its home games on a field across the street from Woollen Gymnasium. In those days, Carolina played in what was called the Dixie Lacrosse League with Duke, Virginia, Washington & Lee, Loyola and the Washington Lacrosse Club. The initial Carolina teams of the late 1930s were coached by Albert C. Cornsweet, a 1929 graduate of Brown. Most of the players on those early lacrosse teams worked part-time jobs to stay in school. After all, it was the apex of the Great Depression. There were some scholarship football players who competed in the sport as well. Rumor has it that Carolina football coach Ray Wolf made his players compete in lacrosse so they’d learn how to run. Wolf had an appreciation of the sport and wanted to use it to his advantage by helping keep his players in shape during the football off-season. In the late 1940s, Bill Darden was hired by the athletic department as a member of the business office staff and he also began to coach the lacrosse team at UNC. Varsity status was officially awarded by the athletic department and letters first granted to members of the 1949 team. The school was admitted as a member of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) in 1950. The 1951 team featured the program's first All-America play- er. Nick Sowell was named the first-team All- America goalie that year by the USILA. After Coach Alan Moore left Chapel Hill following the 1953 campaign, the 1954 squad was coached by George Good, a captain in the United States Marine Corps, and it posted a disappointing 0-6 mark. It proved to be a fore- boding ledger because after a six-year period from 1949-54, the team’s status as a varsity sport at Carolina came to an end. For a decade the men's lacrosse program at the University would lay dormant—a club team but no longer a varsity one—but by no means permanently damaged. Permanent Varsity Status Granted to Lacrosse in 1964 Lacrosse was resurrected at Carolina in 1964 as a varsity program. The program com- peted on a non-scholarship level for 10 years. Carolina upgraded the program with the awarding of scholarships after the hir- ing of head coach Paul Doty during the 1973-74 school year. Despite its rather brief history on campus in comparison to other UNC sports, North Carolina lacrosse has been something very special. Since 1949 the all-time Tar Heel record stands at 357-218-2. Tar Heel teams have won NCAA Division I national championships in 1981, 1982, 1986 and 1991, Carolina teams have also captured Atlantic Coast Conference championships in 1981, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996. The 1981 and 1982 teams won 26 games in succession, comprising one of the longest winning steaks in collegiate lacrosse history. Twenty-one times since first qualifying in 1976, the Tar Heels have competed in the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Only four schools have played in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament more often than Carolina has. After a pair of losing seasons in 1966 and 1967, Jim Bischoff, whose team was winless in 1967, coached the Heels to a 7-4 mark in 1968. In addition, Bischoff’s 1968 team was the first Tar Heel squad to earn a national ranking from the USILA, finishing 25th in the final poll. Mueller Tutors the Likes of Kramer and Peterson In 1969, Fred Mueller, a long-time professor in UNC’s Department of Exercise and Sports Science, began a successful four-year run as UNC’s head coach. The 1970 Tar Heels rank as Mueller’s best team as they finished seventh in the country in the USILA poll with a 9-2 record. Among Mueller’s greatest players were Peter Kramer, who won the Kelly Award as the nation’s outstanding goalkeeper in 1969, and attackman Harper Peterson, who, just as Kramer was, copped honors as a first-team All- America three times in his career. Tar Heel fencing coach Ron Miller adopted double duties and took over the coaching reins on an interim basis. Miller led the team to a 12-5 record in 1973. Those 12 wins stood as Carolina’s school record for victories in a sea- son until the mark was broken by the 1982 national championship squad when that team finished with a 14-0 ledger. The Tar Heels also set a school record in 1973 for regular- season games played in a season with 17 con- tests on the docket. Carolina lacrosse entered a new era in 1973- 74 when the program hired Paul Doty as the first full-time head coach in school history. That same year, the team moved up to scholar- ship status with the first athletic grants in aid in the sport being awarded during the 1974-75 school year. Doty led UNC to national Top 10 rankings in both 1976 and 1977 and to UNC’s first two NCAA Tournament appearances those sea- sons. Another program milestone achieved under Doty’s tutelage was Carolina’s 13-10 victory over Virginia during the 1976 season. It marked the first time Carolina had ever defeated either Maryland or Virginia, the two schools which had dominated ACC lacrosse up to that point in time. Carolina players (clockwise from top left) Ryan Wade, Alex Martin, Holmes Harden, Brooks Matthews and Joe Bedell celebrate the Tar Heels’ 18-13 victory over Towson in the 1991 NCAA championship game. An Era of Excellence underWillie Scroggs

In 1978, UNC went to the hotbed of collegelacrosse, Johns Hopkins University, and hiredthe Blue Jays’ top assistant coach, WillieScroggs, as the Tar Heels’ new head coach. Itwas a move that bore fruit for a dozen yearsuntil Scroggs retired from coaching at the endof the 1990 season to become a senior associ-ate athletic director at UNC. The decision topursue Coach Scroggs was made by then TarHeel athletic director Bill Cobey whose philos-ophy was that you go to the best program in thegame and recruit a top assistant to build yourprogram.

Tar Heel teams were 120-37 during theScroggs era and were invited to the NCAATournament 11 straight seasons from 1980through 1990. In nine of Scroggs’ 12 years,UNC made the NCAA Tournament semifinalround and the 1981, 1982 and 1986 squadswon the NCAA Division I championship. TheTar Heels were 17-8 in NCAA post-seasonplay during his tenure. Scroggs’ teams wonACC titles in 1981, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989and 1990. In addition, the 1982 team finishedthe season ranked No. 1 in the nation in thefinal USILA poll.

When Scroggs announced his retirement inMay of 1990, the University turned to DaveKlarmann, who had been the top assistant toScroggs for 11 seasons. The move paid off ininstantaneous results. In Klarmann’s first sea-son at the helm of the Tar Heels, he led theteam to a 16-0 record and the 1991 NCAA andACC championships. That team also finishedfirst in the USILA poll for only the second timein school history.

In 1993, the Tar Heels again finished first inthe USILA poll, marking the second such fin-ish in Klarmann’s coaching tenure and thethird in the history of Tar Heel lacrosse.Carolina also made the NCAA championshipgame for the fifth time in history in 1993, drop-ping a scintillating 13-12 decision to Syracusein the final seconds of play.

Klarmann resigned following the 2000 sea-son after leading Carolina to five ACC cham-pionships in his tenure. Carolina athletic direc-tor Dick Baddour then employed the same planused by Cobey in 1978 and he went to lacrossepower Johns Hopkins, this time hiring the BlueJays’ head coach, John Haus, to lead Carolinainto the new millennium. The hire of Hauswas a brilliant move by Baddour as theCarolina program returned to the NCAATournament in 2004 for the first time since1998, winning its first NCAA game since 1993in the process.

Stellar Play in the NCAATournament

In winning four NCAA championships since1981, Carolina teams have been involved insome of the most exciting games in the tourna-

ment’s 34-year history. In 1981, UNC went through the regular sea-

son unbeaten and it was ranked No. 2 behindthree-time defending national champion JohnsHopkins entering the tournament. The TarHeels swept to lopsided wins over Syracuseand Navy in Chapel Hill in the first two roundsof the tournament before meeting the unbeatenBlue Jays in the national championship gameat Princeton’s Palmer Stadium. Before acrowd of 13,943, UNC scored six straightgoals in a span of the third and fourth quartersto overcome a three-goal Hopkins advantageand eventually triumph by a 14-13 margin.

In 1982, the Tar Heels swept through theregular season unscathed once again. In theNCAA Tournament, UNC routed Navy andCornell, setting up a championship gamerematch with Johns Hopkins. In a game dom-inated by the two teams’ defenses, UNC beatthe Blue Jays 7-5 behind five goals by junior

attackman David Wingate and brilliant goal-keeping by Tommy Sears.

Carolina’s third NCAA championship camein 1986 and it was clearly the most unexpectedof the quartet. The Tar Heels were seeded fifthgoing into the tournament. No team seededlower than fourth had ever made the champi-onship game prior to the 1986 season and nonelower than third had ever won the title.Ironically, in winning the national champi-onship, the Tar Heels avenged all three of theirregular-season losses and in the exact same

order in which they had lost to those teams ear-lier in the 1986 season. After a 12-10 quarter-final win at Byrd Stadium against Maryland,UNC headed to the first-ever NCAA LacrosseFinal Four. Carolina was well prepared head-ing to Newark, Del., for the semifinals and itavenged a 16-4 regular-season loss to two-timedefending NCAA champion Johns Hopkins bybeating the Blue Jays 10-9 in overtime.Carolina won the game on senior MikeTummillo’s goal off a Gary Seivold assist a lit-tle over two minutes into the extra period. Two days later against Virginia, UNC and theCavaliers traded the lead throughout the cham-pionship contest with neither team ever hold-ing more than a two-goal advantage at anytime. Another overtime period was required tosettle the issue and Gary Seivold came throughagain, scoring 1:50 into the extra session togive the title to Carolina.

Like the 1981 and 1982 teams, 1991’snational championship team finished the sea-son unbeaten. UNC opened NCAATournament play by defeating Loyola 11-9 inthe quarterfinals at a rain-soaked Fetzer Field.Six days later, the Tar Heels handed Syracuseits first NCAA home playoff loss in history asCarolina routed the Orangemen 19-13 at theCarrier Dome. Two days later againstCinderella NCAA finalist Towson, Carolinaled 11-4 at the half and went on to win thegame 18-13, holding off a furious second rallyby the Tigers that saw them cut the lead to one.The Tar Heel victory was led by senior attack-man Dennis Goldstein, the National Player ofthe Year, who was the championship game’sMVP. Goldstein led UNC past Syracuse withfour goals and he added four goals and fourassists in the title game against Towson.
