Carousel Theatre Society - Annual Report - 2012/2013

Message from the President of the Board of Directors

This was another wonderful year at Carousel Theatre for Young People. The season included: The Tempest, The Wizard of Oz, The Cat in the Hat, and Arthur: Boy King. Since we had fantastic scripts, and amazing performances to match, a small profit resulted. We are looking ahead and using this to plan for the future.

We were privileged this year to receive a bequest from our dear friend and volunteer Cheryl Hutch-erson. In her honour, we have created the Cheryl Hutcherson Memorial Special Projects Reserve which will allow us to support new play development.

We thank Dani Fecko for her work as our Production & Facilities Manager last season and wish her all the best in her new role. She is a multi-talented individual that is an asset to Vancouver’s theatre community.

Thanks are in order to our two phenomenal senior managers, Carole and Aliyah. They did a great job of leading and mentoring a highly talented team of staff and volunteers this year.

I look forward to more awesomeness.

Sincerely,

Steve Jones

Artistic Director’s Report

The 2012/13 Season was a successful challenge as the organization renewed our commitment to Carousel Theatre for Young People’s core values: playfulness, artistic excellence, accessibility and community in our artistic productions. CTYP became the first theatre for young audiences compa-ny in Canada to offer audio-described performances for blind and low-vision patrons, through a partnership with the Vo-cal Eye, and our playful spirit shone through our productions.

The Teen Shakespeare Program began in July, with 18 teen ac-tors exploring The Tempest, which was presented from July 27-Au-gust 11, 2012. We explored the four elements (air, fire, earth and water) and how nature and humans co-exist in a vigorous stag-ing that incorporated original music and a sound score cre-ated live onstage with percussion and string instruments. High-lights included Seamus Fera’s fearless performance as Prospero, the ensemble work of a chorus of Ariel’s and the original music composed by Mishelle Cuttler. Many audience members com-mented that this year’s TSP program was the strongest yet.

The Wizard of Oz for ages 4 years + was remounted due to popular demand during holiday season. We made a renewed effort to fully realize the 48 costumes in the production, and increased support for stage management by engaging a CAEA stage manager and CAEA assistant stage manager. This improved CTYP’s stage management program and provided increased mentorship opportunities.

CTYP’s theatre school continues to provide classes for specific age groups throughout the year on a semester basis. The theatre school’s primary focus is to build confidence and inspire creativity. 540 young thespians ages 3-17 years learning their craft and developing confidence under the tutelage of CTYP’s outstanding faculty. Fifty classes were offered. Thank you to: Jackie Black-more, Lisa Bunting, Kayla Dunbar, Mack Gordon, Laura Jaszcz, Marcie Nestman, Melissa Oei, Christine Quintana and Victor Mariano for your stellar leadership this year in working with young people

CTYP co-presented, with Axis Theatre Company, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s A Brown Bear, A Moon and a Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle for ages 3-6 years from January 13-19, 2013 Mermaid Theatre creates vivid, black light puppetry and embraces a no shushing policy which enables young theatre goers to have an authentic, unrepressed vocal response to the performance.

Artistic Director’s Report

The Canadian Premiere of The Cat in the Hat played from February 23- March 31, 2014. A tour de force of physical theatre, this exciting new play adapted by Katie Mitchell of the National Theatre of Great Britain was geared for ages 3-5 years. An incredibly challenging piece, the production received Jessie nominations for Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Ensemble Cast, Outstanding Stage Manage-ment, Outstanding Costume Construction and Outstanding Design Team. In addition to setting box office records, The Cat in the Hat marked the first time CTYP has worked with Seattle Children’s Theatre, who built the set and properties. Two weeks of performances were added to keep up with audience demand.

The world premiere of Arthur: Boy King was staged from April 10-28, 2013. Focusing on the pivotal time when a young boy grabs a sword from a stone and suddenly finds himself with the weight of the world on his shoulders, the production was geared to ages 7-12 years. Arthur: Boy King received Jessie nomina-tions for Outstanding Sound Composition Outstanding Costume Construction and Outstanding Design Team.

Thank you to our artists, staff - Monique Pearson, Kayla Savage, and Dani Fecko (who has moved on to a new position with Boca Del Lupo)- to my senior management partner Aliyah Amarshi, to our volunteers, members and CTYP’s Board of Directors who worked together to create inspiring theatre for young audiences for our community this past year.

Respectfully Submitted,

Carole Higgins, Artistic & Managing Director

General Manager’s Report

Carousel Theatre for Young People’s 2012/13 season started with a tempestuous Shakespearean flurry and took us on a jaunt down the yellow brick road towards a very large, very hungry caterpillar that inched its way to a mischevious cat in a red-and-white striped hat that tumbled into the magical world of King Arthur and his trusted friends. What a delightful adventure the last year was! CTYP continued to demonstrate our passion and drive to bring the very best in theatre for young audi-ences to young people, families and educators from all across Metro Vancouver and this was met with overwhelming support for our work. It was a banner year at the box office with our mainstage season playing to an audience of over 35,000 at an average of 94% capacity. An organizational milestone was achieved with the immense success of The Cat in the Hat: this production was the highest grossing show in CTYP’s history and played to over 13,000 people. CTYP’s work is in demand and our audience base continues to grow year over year.

One of CTYP’s core values is accessibility and we saw an expansion of our accessibility program in the 2012/13 season. We established a partnership with VocalEye to present audio described performances to blind and low vision patrons. We are pleased to be the first theatre for young audiences company in Canada to provide this service and establish access to theatre for a new segment of young people. CTYP also welcomed hundreds of young people from inner city schools and community organizations to our performances through our ticket donation program.

Our community facility rentals program served over 100 arts groups and community organizations. CTYP’s large and small studios were animated with rehearsals, workshops, conferences, performances, meetings, dog-handling classes and much more, bringing hundreds of people to Granville Island and contributing to the bustling creative atmosphere that surrounds us at our home. We were pleased to share our administrative space with Touchstone Theatre and Pi Theatre and wish Pi Theatre well in their new home.

Carousel’s Theatre School for Young People and our Teen Shakespeare Program provided training and performance opportunities for over 500 students in the 2012/13 season.

General Manager’s Report

There’s a reason why the word fundraising starts with “fun”; the 2013 Lawyer Show exemplified this in every sense. Our annual co-production with Touchstone Theatre, which has evolved into the legal event of the year, was Spamalot and it was the most successful Lawyer Show to date. The cast and crew of 32 volunteers from the legal community acted, sang and pranced their way to the Holy Grail in front of sold out houses. Sincere thanks goes to all involved, from our cast of lawyers to those that worked enthusiastically behind the scenes securing sponsorships, building props, selling tickets and more.

The success we achieved at the box office and the Lawyer Show coupled with meticulous financial man-agement practices resulted in a modest surplus. We are looking ahead to the future by investing in our infrastructure so that we can sustainably meet the needs of our growing audience while consistently achiev-ing artistic excellence.

Our staff worked tirelessly with such inspiring dedication to our organization’s mission. Heartfelt grati-tude is extended to Monique Pearson, Dani Fecko, Kayla Savage, all of our theatre school instructors, our box office team, our IT support team and our wonderful volunteers. Each one of you embodies the joyful spirit of CTYP and you all played a significant role in ensuring a successful season. I especially acknowledge my management partner, Carole Higgins whose patience, wisdom and steadfast determina-tion has made my first year at CTYP full of learning and growth and I look forward to what lays ahead.

Carousel Theatre for Young People’s work would not be possible without the generous support of our funders. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the following organizations for their contributions: City of Vancouver, BC Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, HRDC Canada, BC Provincial Government, CMHC Granville Island, RBC Foundation, the Hamber Foundation, Hawthorne Foundation, the Telus Community Foundation and ArtsVest. A sincere thank you as well to our in kind sponsors: The Keg, Dockside Restaurant, Anna’s Cake House, Earl’s, the Testini Family, Starbucks, and A Bread Affair.

And a special thank you to you, our subscribers, donors, Society members and patrons. Without your ongoing support, Carousel Theatre for Young People would not be the thriving family that it is.

CTYP is in a thrilling period of growth and I welcome you to continue to be a part of the exciting times ahead; consider us as part of your annual giving plan, enroll in theatre school, rent our space, renew your season subscription, volunteer. Your participation makes a difference to young people: they are the next generation of artists and patrons of the arts.

Come play with us in our exciting 2013/14 season!

Respectfully submitted,

Aliyah AmarshiGeneral Manager

Carousel’s Theatre School for Young People

Carousel Theatre for Young People’s Theatre School is geared towards young actors ages 3-17 with varied levels of acting experience. Some children are completely new to theatre, while others have been learning with us for years. Regardless of their previous experience, every young thespian is given the opportunity to learn new acting techniques, taught how to communicate with other actors on stage, practice script work and more. Their term culminates in a performance for their families and friends!

Carousel’s Theatre School classes ran at full speed in the 2012/13 season. The Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters had waitlists for many classes and our Summer Mini Camps welcomed many new students to the Carousel family.

We would like to thank our incredible Faculty who have made a dif-ference in our students’ lives by encouraging them to explore their imagination, be themselves and cooperate with one another to cre-ate and enact fantastical stories together: Jackie Blackmore, Lisa Bun-ting, Kayla Dunbar, Mack Gordon, Laura Jaszcz, Marcie Nestman, Melissa Oei, Christine Quintana and Victor Mariano.
