While Berry students took aweek off from academics during

spring break, the Georgia statelegislature changed the way stu-dents across the state will fundtheir educations for the 2011-2012school year.

The HOPE scholarships face-lift became law on Mar. 15, whenGeorgia governor Nathan Dealapproved the changes to the pro-gram from the Georgia House ofRepresentatives and Senate. Pub-lic school HOPE scholars will nolonger have their books and feescovered by HOPE, and HOPE willcover 90 percent of tuition insteadof 100 percent. Private schoolHOPE scholars will see theiraward from the state reduced

from $4,000 to $3,600 per year.GPA requirements have alsochanged. In order to have, stu-dents will have to qualify for anew category of scholarship: theZell Miller HOPE Scholarship.Incoming freshmen will have tohave at least a 3.7 HOPE GPA outof high school with a 1200 on theSAT, and maintain a 3.3 GPA tomaintain the scholarship. Return-ing students who qualify as ZellMiller scholars need to make andmaintain a minimum 3.3 GPA. Re-turning HOPE scholars will haveto have and maintain a minimum3.0 GPA.

Qualied students will seeThe Georgia Tuition Equalization

Grant reduced from $750 per yearto $700 next year.

While funding from the stateis decreasing, tuition and fees willincrease for Berry students nextyear. Vice president of nance Bri-an Erb said tuition will increasesix percent (totaling $1,470) andthat room and board will eachincrease by ve percent. Parkingfees will increase ve dollars persemester.

Erb said the budget advisorycommittee spends a signicantamount of time deliberating ontuition hikes.

Last night Residence Life ran out of roomsto assign to returning students.

The rooms ran out around 9 p.m. HeadResident of Alternative Housing Kelsey Trustysaid the remaining students were wait listed.

The students on the waiting list will ll outa housing preference form of what area theywould like to live in next year, Trusty said. The students will be taken off the waiting listby lottery number and assigned to a room.

Trusty said she did not know what the planis to make room for the students on the wait-ing list but she said Residence Life has a planand Associate Director of Residence Life Den-nis Goshorn and Assistant Dean of Students

Lindsey Taylor will be able to clarify what theplan is soon.

Trusty said students were of course upsetwhen they were told no more rooms wereavailable, but they handled the news verywell.

I saw tears and angry faces, Trusty said.Emotions run high even for students whohave great lottery numbers but I was reallyproud of the way the students handled them-selves. It could have been a lot worse than itwas.

Trusty said there are still certain halls thatare blocked off for incoming freshmen nextyear.

Residence Life made changes to the roomselection procedures this year with hopes of asmoother process.

Goshorn was the guest speaker at the SGAmeeting on Mar. 15. Goshorn said that theroom selection process would be a little differ-ent this year.

Goshorn said there would be no makeupday for students who paid their prepaymentlate or for students without a roommate.

We will assign those students as soon aswe are able, Goshorn said.

Goshorn said there was a bulletin board onVikingWeb this year that allowed students tosearch for a roommate. The goal of this changewas to decrease the number of students atroom selection without a roommate.

O Sudy m. 26, K Blloowas ooded by students eager to laughwith the dynamic comedy duo known asFrangela. This cleverly-named two-piececonsisting of best friends Frances Cal-lier and Angela V. Shelton was the perfectcapstone event for Berry Colleges Interna-tional Week.

Simply by looking at the backgroundof Frangela, the act looked very promis-ing. MISP Programming Group supervisor,DeShon Battle, said he saw Frangela per-form at a college programming conferenceand decided that they would be perfect forBerry College. On Saturday night, VikingFusions Joshua Hayes interviewed Battlewho showed much enthusiasm about the

event. I thought it would be a great ideato get some different types of comedians tocome to Berry, Battle said.

Frangela certainly represents a differenttype of comedy compared to what we areused to here in the bubble. On an individuallevel and as a duo, Frangela has impres-sive and interesting experience in the worldof entertainment. Frances Callier was rec-ognized by most Berry College studentsbecause of her role as Roxy the bodyguard,a character in the infamous Disney ChannelTV show, Hannah Montana. Together, they have appeared on VH1s Best WeekEver, NPRs Day to Day and the featurelm Hes Just Not That Into You.

The fact that Callier and Shelton arebest friends in real life denitely addedto the show. The two met as neighbors inan apartment complex in Chicago, Ill. and

instantly became best friends, said Cal-lier. Since then, Callier and Shelton havetaken every opportunity in the entertain-

ment business to work together. Werelike the Marines: We dont leave anyonebehind, Shelton said. When asked what

it was like to constantly work with her bestfriend, Callier exclaimed Its the best!

With such a dynamic background, onewould expect that Frangela would be intouch with a young audience. This expecta-tion was right on the ball. The two were

able to cater their cleverly crafted witti-cisms to the very unique audience that isBerry College. As stated in an interviewwith Viking Fusions Josh Hayes, Calliersaid As an actor and a performer you needto be versatile.

This versatility exhibited itself in theform of a joke comparing the Ford Complexto Hogwarts, some hilarious commentaryon The Carrier, and, of course, a deer joke.

It was obvious that Frangela was hav-ing a good time with the college studentaudience. Theyre a lot more fun thancomedy club audiences, said Shelton, and by the sound of the hysterical laughteremanating from the events attendees, thestudents seemed to think that Frangelawas a lot more fun than typical comedians.Even those who were initially skepticalabout the comedic merit of the actress whoplayed Roxy on Hannah Montana couldnd something relatable to laugh about.

For those who enjoyed the show, keep alook out for Frangelas upcoming appear-ances on TV. When asked about the futureof Frangela, Callier and Shelton men-tioned shows at prestigious venues such asRadio City Music Hall. Callier and Shel-ton are to be featured in a pilot for a TravelChannel program tentatively titled I DareYou to Go There, and with Nickelodeonon a pilot episode for a new show.

The past, present and future for Frangelais incredibly promising. Berry College stu-dents had the opportunity to be a part ofthis comedic adventure, and it appears as ifthey enjoyed every minute of it.

Sping Indi Music SpotightSpring 2011 has been heralded as one of the best seasons for alternative music in recent memory. Already, we have

seen the release of new albums by The Strokes, Radiohead, Cut Copy, Bright Eyes and many more. Fortunately for indiemusic acionados, there are still more wonderful albums to come. From the return of Brooklyns funk-infused rock band, TVon the Radio, to the sophomore album by folk gods Fleet Foxes, the coming months have enough musical goodness to makeany hipster squeal for joy. For those out there who may not be familiar with these artists and albums, take a listen. You maylike what you hear.

Alternative rock band The Raveo-nettes have always managed tosound futuristic and retro at thesame time. Maybe its the mas-sive amounts of reverb on theelectric guitars or the surf drumbeats tinged with a bit of fuzz.Either way, by the sound of theirlatest single, Forget That YoureYoung, the album looks as prom-ising as ever.

Take the eccentric rock n roll ofDavid Bowie, add the soul of RayCharles, lace everything with abit of electronic music, and youwill get something resemblingthe band TV On The Radio. Theybrought us the catchy hit singlewe know as Wolf Like Me. Aftera few sneak peeks at some songsoff of Nine Types of Light, thisalbum has gained a lot of hype, and for good reason.

Combining a U2 and Killers-esque alt-rock feel with an orches-tral backdrop worked for The Air-borne Toxic Event in 2008 whenthey released Sometime AroundMidnight. It is difcult to imag-ine that their new music couldbeat the old stuff, but singles likeAll I Ever Wanted show thatthey have returned after threeyears to try to make their secondalbum all that we will ever want.

Dont be fooled by the Simon &Garfunkel comparisons oatingaround Fleet Foxes. Sure, its folky, and it may sound like the 70s, butit is unfair to place this wonderfulband in any particular era. Essen-tially, Fleet Foxes music is bestlistened to on a sunny day withno distractions. Its originalityand bright vibe leaves everyonehappy, and the new album shoulddo the same.

During their recent performanceon Late Night With JimmyFallon, Okkervil River show-cased their new sound. Withtwo drum kits and a plethora ofassorted string and brass instru-ments, the new single, Wake andBe Fine, was performed withextreme enthusiasm and emotion. Will Sheff and his indie-folk-rockband have outdone themselvesagain with I Am Very Far.

After losing four starters and ve of their top six play -es e NBA a yea ag and afe disaining lssesto the likes of Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi, manythought this years UK team would struggle in the NCAATournament.

But after winning its rst three tournament games bya combined 12 points, including two game-winning shotsfrom freshman Brandon Knight, UK found itself back in theElite Eight against fellow storied program North Carolina, who UK defeated by seven points to reach its 14th FinalFour.

UK fans know the Cats Final Four opponent well. The Huskies handed John Calipari and company their

rst loss this season, an 84-67 blowout in the Maui Invita-tional back on Nov. 24. The UConn Huskies have been oneof the hottest teams in the NCAA this March.

After an improbable run in the Big East tournament, in-cluding ve wins in ve days at Madison Square Garden towin the conference championship, UConn earned a no. 3seed in this years tournament.

With victories over Bucknell, Cincinnati, San Diego Stateand Arizona fresh off their dismantling of top-seeded Duke,UConn has improved its current win streak to nine games ina row and improved their record in neutral-site tournament

games to 12-0.The Huskies have a coach with Final Four experience, Jim

Calhoun, and a team thats accustomed to playing in a win-or-go-home environment.

Led by guard Kemba Walker, regarded by many as onef e layes in e nain, e huskies eaen -ponents with speed and athleticism from the outside alongwith physical play inside.
