California State University, Dominguez Hills California State University, Dominguez Hills, under the leadership of President Thomas A. Parham, Ph.D., strives to be the model for urban metropolitan universities in the United States. The mission of California State University, Dominguez Hills is to provide education, scholarship and service that are, by design, accessible and transformative. We welcome students who seek academic achievement, personal fulfillment, and preparation for the work of today and tomorrow. California State University, Dominguez Hills (a.k.a. CSUDH, Dominguez Hills, or Cal State Dominguez Hills) is a public university in the city of Carson within Los Angeles County. It was founded in 1960 and is part of the California State University (CSU) system. The campus sits on the historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest land grant in the Los Angeles area. The land was in the continuous possession of the Dominguez family through seven generations - from 1784 to its acquisition by the people of the state of California for the University. The campus mascot is the Toro, Spanish for bull.

The University was originally situated in Palos Verdes, CA and named South Bay State College (1960-1962). After the Watts Rebellion of 1965, the state decided that the emerging school should attend to the underserved population of South Central Los Angeles. It was renamed California State College, Dominguez Hills (1966), before achieving university status in 1977 and becoming known by its present name.

Founded on the principle of social justice, the student population is among the most diverse in the country. Nearly 90% of the student body are people of color. Hispanic students make up 64% of the student body; that is the 3rd highest in the state. African American students comprise 14% (the highest percentage of any public university in California) and 10.8% of the students identify as Asian/Pacific Islander. CSUDH Colleges CSUDH has six outstanding Colleges in which students pursue their academic endeavor.

College of Arts and Humanities (CAH)

College of Business Administration and Public Policy (CBAPP)

College of Education (COE)

College of Extended and International Education (CEIE)

College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences (CNBS) Educational Excellence CSU Dominguez Hills is a major university for Los Angeles and Orange Counties. It offers 46 undergraduate majors, 23 master’s degrees, and multiple certificate and credential programs. The campus is accredited by the following associations: Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the National Association of Schools of Theatre. It is expected that in Summer 2020, the College of Business Administration and Public Policy will receive the prestigious AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation. This designation further solidifies the University’s aspirations to be a model urban university in America. California State University, Dominguez Hills was honored with a prestigious Eddy Award during the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s (LAEDC) 24th Annual Eddy Awards gala dinner in November 2019. The award recognized CSUDH’s excellence in facilitating one of the greatest levels of social mobility of universities in the region. In 2015, Cal State Dominguez Hills ranked #11 in Washington Monthly’s list of Master’s University Rankings. That same year, CSUDH was ranked 88th nationally by The Brookings Institution for the value-add to students who graduate. Using a similar methodology, The Economist ranked CSUDH 63rd in its 2015 college rankings.

College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing The College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing (CHHSN) features one of the best Orthotics and Prosthetics programs in the United States. Masters students work hands-on with patients (not molds nor models) to help people live to the fullest. Operating out of a 12,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility replete with advanced measuring tools, 3D printers, and components such as acrylic resin, carbon fiber, thermoplastics, silicone, aluminum, and titanium, this program has a service range of over 150 miles from Los Angeles to San Diego. Patients served include veterans returning from war and other individuals who have lost body parts due to accidents, illness, and disease. In keeping with the values of the University, there is also a community service aspect to their efforts. Students work with third-world countries to help fulfill needs of the local population such as creating bamboo feet. Graduates enjoy an exceedingly high rate of employment. CHHSN also features one of only two Occupational Therapy programs available in the CSU system. “The Orthotics and Prosthetics program is one of the jewels in the crown of Dominguez Hills.” -- Enrique Ortega, Interim Dean, CHHSN This master’s program annually receives up to 400 applications for only 65 available spaces. This is due to the extremely favorable faculty-to-student ratio and the great accessibility of the professors. An astounding 99% of students in this program pass the board exam and graduates see a 99% hire rate. Cohorts in this program work closely with participants of all age groups to best prepare them for their future patients. Achieving a doctorate in this field is becoming the industry standard and CSUDH expects to unveil that offering in Summer 2020. CHHSN is also the administrative headquarters of the California State University’s Statewide Nursing Program. This fully-online, masters-only program ranks #93 in the US News and World Report in Best Online Bachelor’s Programs. Center for Innovation in STEM Education Among the most impressive program offerings at Dominguez Hills is STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). This undergraduate program incorporates STEM, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) and STEEAM (science, technology, engineering, English language development, art and math). CSUDH is contracted by local K-12 school districts to provide STEM education and a pathway for young students to enter STEM professions. At the core of this program are the mobile Fabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) which bring the education directly to the students. A $1M gift from Toyota funded five mobile labs and vehicles to pull them. Each is outfitted with the latest cutting edge technology such as laser cutters, 3D printers, vacuum formers, vacuum cutters, and electronic components for prototyping projects.

“Cal State Dominguez Hills has the best STEM program in the entire state of California.” -- Dr. Michael Spagna, Provost During STEAM Week, CSUDH “takes over” a school for five days providing K-12 students the opportunity to develop and complete a project. Friday culminates in a showcase to parents, teachers, and peers of their final product and the science that produced it. During the summer months, in the contracted school districts, CSUDH conducts an intensive five-week summer school take over for K-12 students. This well-respected program has helped Dominguez Hills develop a strong presence in the community. The center is also active in educating the educators. In Fall 2019, CSUDH received $10 million in federal grants to establish a comprehensive residency program that will train more than 250 science, technology, engineering, and math teachers and serve 40,000 K-12 students in Los Angeles County. This offering provides K-12 educators, at no cost, micro credentials and certificates making them NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) proficient. To furnish these K-12 educational experiences, CSUDH hires, trains, educates, and mentors 250-300 college students--nearly all from the Dominguez Hills campus. In addition to being deployed in the Fab Labs, these students serve in every K-12 classroom in the contracted districts as STEM tutors during classroom hours. These various components are supported by large grants from federal and state entities, the National Science Foundation, the United States Department of Education, as well as philanthropic funds. This program addresses several issues at the heart of the STEM crisis: the need for qualified science and math teachers, a need to inspire K-12 students through engaging STEM experiences, and the need for more women and minorities graduating with STEM degrees and pursuing careers in related fields. “It is unlike any other program in the entire nation.” -- Kamal Hamdan Ed.D., Director, Center for Innovation in STEM Education Currently, in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Professor Kamal Hamdan has mobilized his network and their 3D printers to fabricate hundreds of face shields per day for medical professionals in need. These activities are consistent with the campus values of using one’s education, not simply for personal career advancement, but to empower the lives of others. South Bay Economic Institute Dominguez Hills developed the South Bay Economic Institute (SBEI) serving the College of Business Administration and Public Policy faculty and students and surrounding communities. It leads the area with innovative and forward-thinking economics education and research by: developing economics curriculum and teachings while incorporating proven high-impact
