Thanks to the generous support of The Grossman Family Foundation, Carver students at Norwalk High School are exchanging photos with their peers in Sonrisa de Dios, Nicaragua, through a program called NicaPhoto, which is sponsored by Norwalk’s Sister City Program. The Norwalk students are planning a trip to visit their new Nicaraguan friends this year, such as Mayra who shares her self-portrait with us.

Carver Milestones

1938: Carver is founded by community and church leaders.

1970: Jacques Meyers, Carver’s first full-time Executive Director, creates the middle and high school after-school Youth Development Program (YDP).

1975: Carver’s programs are moved from a rented warehouse to today’s multi-purpose building.

1978: Carver’s new Executive Director, Richard Fuller, creates the after-school CASPER program for elementary students and other initiatives.

2004: Carver’s new Executive Director, Novelette Peterkin, strengthens Carver’s traditional programs, storied athletic leagues, college tours, community events, and relationships throughout the community while she begins to carefully expand Carver’s acclaimed after-school programs into Norwalk Public Schools.

2004/05 to 2009/10: Fiscal Budgets (July to June) grow from $955,024 to $1,284,000.

2010/11: At the outset of the fiscal year, Richard Whitcomb, founder

and chair of the new Carver Strategic Planning Group, and Novelette Peterkin work with the Norwalk Public Schools (NPS) new Superintendent, Dr. Susan Marks, to implement the early stages of the PLUS campaign to further expand Carver innovative programming throughout NPS.

December 2010: $250,000 challenge grant awarded by the Richard and Barbara Whitcomb Foundation to be met by June 2011.

January 2011: The 2010/11 fiscal budget of $1,657,000 is met by January 2011 in cash and pledges. Carver is now serving more youth in Norwalk Public Schools than at the Community Center.

February 2011: The 2010/11 fiscal budget increases to $2,003,500 at the February board meeting.

March 2011: The Fairfield County Sports Commission established the Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy at the Carver Community Center.

MissionTo help children reach their greatest potential by providing educational, social and recreational programs in a positive, safe and fun environment.

Having already met our largest-ever $1.6 million 2010-2011 annual budget halfway through the fiscal year, the Board of Directors approved an increased budget surpassing $2 million at its February board meeting, the largest budget by far in Carver’s 73-year history. Three primary elements are now converging to make this profound growth possible, which is the impetus for this mid-year report: Richard Whitcomb, the retired headmaster of New Canaan’s St. Luke’s School and a longtime Carver volunteer, is leading this expansion effort, which we are calling the PLUS Campaign; Dr. Susan Marks, appointed Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools in 2010, welcomes a deeper collaboration with Carver; and the stalwart support and encouragement of our donors and Board of Directors to carefully expand Carver’s reach into Norwalk Public Schools. Carver is helping children to realize their dreams every day, fostering emotional, physical and academic

growth, long-term achievement, academic continuity, and a life-long love of learning. Carver is proud to report to you on our ability to serve more children than ever before as we partner with many in the community to narrow the Achievement Gap.

Dear friends,

We are pleased to report that Carver is significantly increasing the number of children who attend its free after-school academic, athletic and enrichment programs by expanding beyond the four walls of our community center on Academy Street.

Over the last several years, Carver programs have reached into all four of Norwalk’s public middle schools and the high school, now bringing a new world of test preparation, Ballroom dancing, mentoring and tutoring, videography, photography, cooking, improvisation, financial literacy, hands-on-science (e.g., Maritime Aquarium), cartooning and dozens of other programs to Norwalk Public School students. These opportunities help keep kids in school and build character. At our February board meeting, we approved a new budget to further expand Carver’s programs within Norwalk Public Schools. We are able to increase our budget, thanks to our extraordinarily generous donors in all the surrounding towns who believe in

Carver’s evidence-based programs and mission. We believe we can help close the Achievement Gap one child at a time. Carver is expanding its funding sources to aid the shortfall in public education funding while also taking children off our waiting list for our in-demand after-school programs.

Dr. Susan Marks, the Norwalk Public Schools new Superintendent, highlights the fact that Carver’s close partnership with the Norwalk Public School teachers and administrators has opened the way for Carver’s broadening role in the community.

“As the needs of Norwalk’s families increase, the resources available to support public education continue to diminish. In addition to expanding its traditional after-school programs, Carver, as a discerning private partner, is helping Norwalk Public Schools embark on unfunded initiatives to improve student achievement,” writes Dr. Marks. “It is only with these public/private partnerships that we will be able to raise the bar and close the achievement gap for our students.”

800 sophomores and less than half the juniors currently take the PSAT. One of the key predictive aspects of the PSAT is to help us identify the students who need our help to get them on track for college.

The PLUS Campaign will take us from innovation to transformation. Too often, innovative work remains stranded on the periphery and not brought to the mainstream. PLUS seeks to work in collaboration with Norwalk Public Schools to help us all re-imagine what is

possible for all youth and families of Norwalk.

PLUS strives to make improvements in four areas: student learning, family engagement, school effectiveness, and community vitality. PLUS develops personalized learning pathways for each of our students and the PLUS Campaign is also what can be accomplished when a partnership is sustained between our schools and community resources.

The 2011-2012 PLUS CampaignPerseverance, Leadership, Understanding, Success

The PLUS Campaign confronts the widening Achievement Gap in Norwalk by expanding Carver’s free programming within Norwalk’s Middle and High Schools. We are focusing new resources on helping individual youth become ready for college. We work with Norwalk Public School counselors and teachers to identify those students most in need of this heightened attention.

With a $250,000 challenge grant awarded by the Richard and Barbara Whitcomb Foundation and a $167,000 challenge grant from an anonymous foundation, both to be met by June 2011, in preparation for the 2011 Summer Academies and the 2011-2012 academic year, Carver is working to increase its programs as described below.

The PLUS Campaign brings community resources to the schools. Professionals in their respective fields facilitate the many enrichment programs. PLUS provides later buses. PLUS utilizes certified teachers in

each participating school. PLUS offers intense SAT programs at each high school and CMT programs at each middle school. PLUS offers recreation programs, Career Fairs, paid internships and jobs for high school students, and international collaborations, among many other opportunities for youth.

Other PLUS Campaign Initiatives The Achievement Gap, which is measured by grades, standardized test scores, dropout rates, course selection, and college completion rate, is the disparity in academic performance that separates low-income and minority students from others. Connecticut’s Achievement Gap is currently the very worst in the nation.

As Carver and Norwalk Public Schools (NPS) further integrate their individual strengths for the benefit of all students, specific NPS needs are being identified as being both measureable and perfectly aligned with the Carver mission. For example, for the 2011-2012 academic year, Carver raised the funds necessary to give every 9th, 10th and 11th grader the opportunity to take the PSAT during the school day at no cost to them. Carver’s 41st Annual Spring College TourApril 15 to April 23, 2011 The itinerary this year for 30 enthusiastic and chaperoned Carver students is as follows: Clark University, Atlanta, GA; Morris Brown College, Atlanta, GA; Savannah College of Art & Design, Savannah, GA; Allen University, Columbia, SC; Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC; North Carolina A & T University, Greensboro, NC; North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC; St. Augustine College, Raleigh, NC; Shaw University, Raleigh, NC; Washington, DC tour; and then home to Norwalk, CT.

The annual spring College Tour is an integral component of Carver’s after-school Youth Development Program (YDP) for Middle and High School students. Students on our College Tour last spring also worked as daily reporters for the Daily Norwalk, filing stories with photos each day.

Our second annual college tour, a one-day tour of Connecticut colleges, takes place each fall on Election Day

Carver College Scholarship Fund

Supported by the Serenbetz Family Foundation and others, this fund helps Carver graduates enroll in the schools of their choice. In 2010, twelve Carver students received a total of $22,000 to attend the following schools: College of New Rochelle; Delaware State University; Eastern Connecticut State University; Norwalk Community College; Rhode Island School of Design; Sacred Heart University; Savannah College of Art and Design; Southern Connecticut State University; University of Connecticut; and Virginia Union.

Summer Camp Programs

Our Summer Enrichment Program provides academic, recreational, social and cultural programming to 145 low and moderate income youth ages 5 to 13 years old. Launched last summer, a reading program designed and facilitated by Carly Imhoff at Johns Hopkins University to meet the objectives of the Connecticut State English Language Arts frameworks serves an additional 75 kids at East Norwalk Library.

2009 Community Builder Award Honoree

The Carver Board of Directors created The Community Builder Award in 2005 to recognize at our annual Child of America gala exceptional corporate leadership. Award recipients are honored for fostering a strong nonprofit sector in Norwalk and in meeting the educational and human service needs of its employees, their families and neighbors.

This year, Pepperidge Farm is being honored. Award recipients, Pitney Bowes (2005), Affinion Group (2006), GE (2007), Stew Leonard’s and Norwalk Hospital (2008), Bank of

America (2009) and Deloitte LLC (2010), are exemplary institutional stakeholders in our community and make a significant difference in the lives of Carver youth and the greater Norwalk community and beyond.

Connection PartiesIn addition to Carver’s annual gala, individuals offer their homes and committees help organize wonderful gatherings for friends and neighbors to learn about the work of Carver. Two such parties in 2010 were organized in Rowayton and Darien. Hundreds of people enjoyed fine food and fellowship while learning about and advancing Carver.

We are organizing Connection Parties this spring in New Canaan, Rowayton, Darien and other towns in May and June 2011. If anyone would like to be invited and/or participate on the committees, please let us know. The number of these celebrations we hold each year is only limited by the number of hearty friends willing to help spread the joy. Please let us know if you are interested in hosting such a party.

Each year, Carver honors leaders in the fight for educational opportunity and a just society. These individuals are exceptional role models for our youth who through their thought, word and deeds inspire us all.

Our annual gala raises critical funds for the advancement of Carver’s programs. It is also an important occasion for Carver’s constituency to gather to honor Carver’s leaders and the Carver youth and families who exemplify Carver’s vision for success.

Carver honored Debo P. Adegbile in June 2010. As director of litigation for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF), Mr. Adegbile oversees the areas of criminal and economic justice, education and political participation. He successfully argued the case before the Supreme Court against a constitutional challenge to the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and coordinated national campaign strategy and made appearances to educate the public about VRA issues.

New Pond Farm Caver youth are invited each year to enjoy summer camp, including sleep-away camp experiences, at New Pond Farm, a beautiful 102-acre property located in West Redding, Connecticut. It was once the home of actress Carmen Matthews and today it is an outstanding outdoor classroom. There are a variety of habitats for environmental programs

including woodlands, wetlands and pastures. Native American programs are enhanced by an authentically recreated encampment. Farm programs take place in barns that house milking cows, sheep, chickens and roosters. A barn-like Learning Center is the site of art shows, barn dances and so much more.

A Carver Achiever: Jasmine Organizations like families have budgets to meet, events to plan, mouths to feed, rooms to clean, and an infinite number of responsibilities to plan, keep straight, funded and met. But at the heart of it all there are relationships. It’s for the relationships that we all do what we do. It’s the relationships that make sense of our lives, both for individuals and institutions alike. Carver’s purpose can be summed-up in one of many, many relationships: Jasmine.

Jasmine found Carver through another charity that recommended her to us. Our annual spring College Tour (this year, April 15 to April 23, 2011) first caught her interest, but that was merely the beginning of Jasmine’s years-long relationship with the Carver family. She commuted via public transportation from out of town each day to fully embrace all the opportunities she found here. On a subsequent spring College Tour (we encourage our youth to participate in as many as they can), Jasmine and Virginia State University found each other. One of the points of these annual

far-flung journeys to colleges and universities across the country is to awaken the hopes of youth whose circumstances would otherwise deflate aspirations for higher education. Jasmine had her own life challenges to face down, and she did. She became determined to successfully complete high school and be accepted to her now beloved VSU!

VSU accepted her. They gave her scholarships and other grant support, but she remained $12,000 short. At the time, Carver did not have the funds to make-up that shortfall so we encouraged her to begin her college career at Norwalk Community College where she earned her spot on the Dean’s List and into the hearts of her professors and peers there. With a generous scholarship from our great Darien partner, Person to Person, and with $8,500 from Carver’s own Scholarship Fund, Jasmine is now attending VSU.

collaborative effort with the generous support of Noroton Presbyterian Church volunteers. Noroton Presbyterian Church, in addition to giving significant financial support, also organize a “Mothers and Others Celebration” for hundreds of Carver mothers. Many hundreds of volunteers, individuals and groups, make Carver

the success it is year after year. Carver will always remain a community -led initiative.

employees dedicated May 20, 2010 to renovating Carver’s community center on Academy Street, including painting almost all exterior and interior walls, cleaning the bleachers in our gym, organizing storage closets, landscaping the playground, removing and pruning trees, and installing new playground equipment. It was a complete makeover!

GE Capital Fun Day last summer saw some 40 volunteers organize all-day events for Carver kids, including a water balloon toss, musical chairs, limbo, a jump rope contest, Fear Factor, tug of war, arts & crafts, and, of course, a big basketball game – all with the volunteers as participants as well as sponsors. They crowned the day with great food, including Ice Cream Sundaes with all the trimmings. The kids were elated!

At the end of last summer, about 25 Peppers & Rogers Group volunteers spent a day thoroughly cleaning the Carver community center to prepare the building for the fall programs.

Carver held its annual Career Fair on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the

Carver Center. More than 400 young people attended.

Thanks to the event Co-Chairs, Darien residents Holly Watts and Jane Malcolm, students met with a wide spectrum of professionals from Darien and elsewhere to explore future career educational goals in technology, medicine, public service and many other exciting disciplines.

The following professionals were among those who generously offered to give of their expertise and time in interactive exchanges with to our young people: Darien Police, a member of the News 12 Team, a pharmacist, podiatrist, nurse, accountant, photographer, IBM information technology officer, banker, children’s author and illustrator, a dentist, US Marines and National Guard, social worker, engineer, professional cartoonist, a representative from Norwalk Community College Culinary school, and the Fairfield County Sports Commission.

The Career Fair is the highlight of Carver’s annual “Meet the Professional Series,” where Carver students gain insight into exciting and unfamiliar careers directly from the seasoned professionals. The annual event is a

Norwalk Promise

America’s Promise Alliance recognized the City of Norwalk as one of the 2010 “100 Best Communities for Young People.” Carver is working with Norwalk 2.0 to create Norwalk Promise (norwalkpromise.org), an interactive online tool and a printed map to show all opportunities available to Norwalk’s youth. In May 2011, Carver will organize a citywide celebration recognizing Norwalk’s being named one of the nation’s “100 Best” and to begin distributing the Norwalk Promise map.
