1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. Casablanca, a film that was released in 1942 was voted number three in the AFI top films of all time. The captivating acting made it no wonder why the leading roles placed in first and third as the best actors of all time; according to AFI. With Humphrey Bogart in first and Ingrid Bergman in third this dynamic duo made this movie a classic. This tale of love and loss puts a romantic yet realistic view on human interaction; showing how sometimes one needs to be able to put ones desires aside for others needs. At the end of the action Rick let Ilsa go even though he loved her, although this makes for a sad ending he did so because he believed she had bigger things to take care of. "We'll always have Paris." Rick says as she boards the plane to Lisbon with her ill husband. While this is centered around a love story Casablanca is a layered film featuring many topics; educating and entertaining it took historical information and a story of love and struggle to help achieve a broader spectrum of audience members. 2) Find a related article and summarize the content. (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) Casablanca was directed by Michael Curtiz who won best director for this film. when this film came out there were it was considered to be just another Warner Brother's release, little did they know the impact it would have on the film industry succeeding in popularity seventy years after its release. This film was made on a tight budget proved that great art doesn't need a lot of money to be impactful, great art speaks for itself. Casablanca is based onMurray BurnettandJoan Alison's un-produced stageplayEverybody Comes to Rick's. Bringing this story to life was a process having to delay several times in writing the screenplay due to the studio resistance and the bombing of Pearl Harbor the writing process was put on hold. Everyone involved in this show was pretty established and recognized in their field, but no one would have guessed the reaction people would have gained from it.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.? http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-casablanca-1942

This article completely correlated with my feelings on the film. Giving up love for higher purposes! it might not be the happiest ending but it is honorable and life changing. The aesthetic and beauty of this movie made it both visually and emotionally pleasing; triggering several emotions and senses. Casablanca is a well rounded film, this movies features many talented actors, was produced by an all-star crew, and had powerful meaning in the action of the plot. "Stylistically, the film is not so much brilliant as absolutely sound, rock-solid in its use of Hollywood studio craftsmanship." -Ebert

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of 4 things: the screening, class 3discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director. Casablanca is a classic film that embodies all of the elements needed to create a fantastic work of art. Emotionally driven this work digs into the characters personalities, channeling their morals by having them placed with compromising decisions. This movie teaches that selfless deeds need to be considered before choosing the obvious; this is a lesson all people should learn. Imagine giving something you love up in order to help others; it's a pretty beautiful thing. "Play it, Sam."
