• Movie begins with a murder of refugee, exit visas are stolen

Synopsis

• German major Strasser and Louis Renault go to Rick’s café to find the murderer

• Ugarte asks Rick to hold the visas while he finds a buyer

• Renault asks Rick to not interfere with the arrest of the murderer. The police are concerned that Lazlo (a Czech resistance leader) will get the visas and escape.

• Rick is shocked to see Ilsa enter the bar

• Rick has flashback to his love affair with Ilsa in Paris, he had to leave w/o her when the Nazis invaded

• Ilsa eventually explains that she couldn’t leave with Rick because Lazlo was her husband who she presumed to be dead. When she learned that he was alive, they continued their resistance movement.

• The police arrest Lazlo at Rick’s. Lazlo begs Rick to use the letters to help Ilsa escape.

• Rick tricks the police into releasing Lazlo

• Rick tells Ilsa that she must leave with Lazlo, and they rush to the airport.

• Renault and Strasser arrive at the airport. Strasser attempts to stop the flight, but Rick shoots him.

• Instead of turning in Rick, Strasser tells the police to “round up the usual suspects”
