case against 104tango

After a couple of days of suspicious activity, there appears to be reasonable proof of some iffy goings on with regards to resistance agent 104tango. This morning (03/03/2014) user 104tango was active in Southampton, the last registered activity was at 9.02am, where he/she was deploying resonators on St.Michaels Church. 19 minutes later, 104tango was present in Hythe, attacking the ‘Hythe Post Office’ portal. The time at which 104tango is attacking the portals in Hythe is consistent with someone using the Hythe ferry (docking at 9.15, in Hythe by 9.20). However, the time at which they were deploying resonators, on St. Michaels Church to then be able to get to the Ferry terminal and make it on the ferry is not feasible. The ferry leaves Town Quay at 9.00am; the agent was carrying out actions at 9.02am and would then have to travel from the Church to the Ferry terminal in order to get on the ferry, a journey which, on foot, takes 8 minutes.

After a couple of days of suspicious activity, there appears to be reasonable proof of some

iffy goings on with regards to resistance agent 104tango.

This morning (03/03/2014) user 104tango was active in Southampton, the last registered

activity was at 9.02am, where he/she was deploying resonators on St.Michaels Church.

19 minutes later, 104tango was present in Hythe, attacking the ‘Hythe Post Office’ portal.

The time at which 104tango is attacking the portals in Hythe is consistent with someone

using the Hythe ferry (docking at 9.15, in Hythe by 9.20). However, the time at which they

were deploying resonators, on St. Michaels Church to then be able to get to the Ferry

terminal and make it on the ferry is not feasible.

The ferry leaves Town Quay at 9.00am; the agent was carrying out actions at 9.02am and

would then have to travel from the Church to the Ferry terminal in order to get on the ferry,

a journey which, on foot, takes 8 minutes.

Page 2: Case Against 104tango

The journey would be much shorter if the agent was using a bicycle or bus, but at this point

in time public transport would not get them there quickly as the main road down to town

quay is currently undergoing road works and buses are being diverted – extending the

journey time. Even with a bike however, 104tango is already behind schedule to get that

9.00am ferry – most likely arriving at 9.05 at the earliest.

If 104tango did indeed make the ferry journey over to Hythe at 9.00, he would have arrived

in Hythe at 9.15, after a 5 minute journey down the pier that would have gotten him into

Hythe village for 9.20.

At the time they are alleged to have gotten the ferry back to Southampton (9.40) that would

have only given 104tango 20 minutes to wander around Hythe. Whilst this is entirely

plausible – it strikes as being a little odd that one would spend half an hour (all round)

travelling on a rather expensive ferry to spend 20 minutes in a village attacking a level 6

portal as a level 3 agent, especially given the glut of portals in Southampton itself.

This evidence on its own isn’t damning but should be seen in the wider context – taking into

account the players return journey from Hythe to Southampton. [Shown below]

Page 3: Case Against 104tango

At 9.45 104tango made his/her final attack against Hythe Post Office. 11 minutes later

he/she was attacking Holy Rood Church in Southampton.

As previously discussed, crossing Southampton water can be achieved in short time by

making use of the Hythe ferry, however the recorded times shown above (on the

assumption that they are correct) suggest that even with the use of Hythe ferry, agent

104tango could not have made it to these two places in the space of 11 minutes – the ferry

journey alone takes 10 minutes.

104tango is a level 3 agent, thus he has a small radius of fire when using bursters, so we can

assume that he would need to be reasonably close to both portals to attack/place

resonators.

The above image is of the Hythe ferry time table, at the time that 104tango was attacking

holy rood church; he/she would have needed to be on the 9.40 ferry. Now this is a bit of a

red herring, as the ferry doesn’t actually leave at 9.40 - the pier train leaves at 9.40. The

ferry itself leaves at 9.45 which is also the last recorded time that 104tango was still

attacking Hythe post office.

Page 4: Case Against 104tango

From the post office, remembering that they would need to be close by the portal, to the

end of the pier (as he/she would have missed the tram) it takes 9 minutes to walk. We can

say, maybe 5 minutes to run... even if it took 3 or 4 minutes to run that distance, it is highly

improbable that he/she would have made the ferry in time. They are very strict on their

turnaround.

Even though they are strict on their turn around, it isn’t impossible that the ferry was

running late, and 104tango would have been able to make it onto the ferry. But that would

have delayed the agent getting across the water – a journey that takes 10-12 minutes,

pushing 104tango well past the 9.56 time at which he/she was at holy rood.

Assuming that the ferry was indeed on time, it would have gotten 104tango to Town Quay

Southampton for about 9.55am. 104tango would then need to make their way to Holy Rood

Page 5: Case Against 104tango

church, a journey that would take 8 minutes on foot – taking them well past the 9.56 at

which they destroyed a resonator on the church.

There is a bus service that runs every 10 minutes from town quay past holy rood, it would

take 3 minutes to travel there - not including the time to disembark from the ferry – walk

through the building to the bus, embark/disembark from the bus and then walk back down

to holy rood (as the nearest bus stop is beyond the church).

Noted already though, there are currently road works on the main road to the church, which

means buses are being diverted via a longer route.

As discussed, 104tango may be using a bicycle to get around, however that would still only

leave him/her 1 minute (assuming the ferry left on time at 9.45 and took 10 minutes to

cross Southampton water) to get from the ferry to the church. It’s just not doable.

The timings are almost credible, but they are just a little too far out to actually work. In total

it would have taken agent 104tango 27 minutes to walk from the post office to the church,

whilst using the ferry.

Post office to ferry – 9 minutes

Ferry to town quay – 10 minutes

Town quay to holy rood – 8 minutes

Again, even when taking into account the agent running/using public transport/biking and

somehow not missing the ferry, it would still amount to more than 11 minutes (the gap

between the attack on Hythe ferry and the placement of the resonator on holy rood)

Post office to ferry – 3 minutes (running or bike)

Ferry to town quay – 10 minutes

Town quay to holy rood – 3 minutes (running, bike or bus)

Page 6: Case Against 104tango

The above, generous estimate, still doesn’t account from embark/disembark and making the

way through the terminal, accessing the phone etc.

Further evidence of suspicious activity as of the evening of 03/03/2014.

At around 7.30, myself (agent Uber_Ghost) and agent Haylec travelled to Hythe to rebuild,

farm and have a pint.

We noticed that agent 104tango was operating in Southampton and we decided to wait and

see where he would travel to next.

As can be seen from the screenshot below, his last action was to link from ‘in the swim’ to

the masonic hall at 7.56pm. In the swim is located in the West Quay shopping centre.

Poor signal inside the building couple with poor GPS location because of the building makes

this a tricky portal to work on. At the same time, he would have been being ushered out of

the centre as it closes at 8 o’clock.

Overlooking the already damning evidence on the above screen shot that 5 minutes after

linking ‘in the swin’ to the masonic hall, 104tango was attacking portals in hythe, we’ll just

break it down.

Page 7: Case Against 104tango

Looking at google maps again, it’s a 16 minute walk to town quay to catch hythe ferry.. even

at a pace, 104tango has only four minutes to make it to the ferry. An impossibility in itself.

The ferry then takes 10-12 minutes to cross southampton water - getting him into hythe at

8.15. which is well after he was attacking the compass seat and post office portals in hythe.

There is only a small area (essentially an alleyway) in whch a player can attack both the

compas seat and the post office portals – especially given the agents low level and need to

be nearby those portal – both Agent Haylec and myself wandered in/around this area

looking for evidence of someone playing ingress, but never found anyone.

Furthermore, and quite damning in itself, is that there is no ferry at 8.00pm leaving from

Southampton for agent 104tango to get.

Page 8: Case Against 104tango

When questioned about this discrepancy, 104tango claimed that if he turned off his GPS it

would shoot his location across Southampton water to land in Hythe directly on top of those

two portals. [Refer to the ‘highlighted’ comment below that was directed at me]

As we have already established the ferry doesn’t run at 8 o’clock, though it’s not implausible

that he was allowed to sit on the ferry and wait until it left at half past 8, and was therefore

able to use his no-gps trick to throw his marker across the water. However we still have to

take into account that he was only 5 minutes into a 15 minutes journey to the ferry station

Page 9: Case Against 104tango

at this point and I would find it highly irregular that in the middle of a large city like

Southampton; I could turn my gps off and have it place me 5 miles away in village.

As a side step from the allegations of spoofing, the players behaviour in game towards other

players has also proved to be unbecoming, in the following example he tells @Barese, an

opposition agent that he has never previously spoken to or had any dealings with, that he is

going to ‘come fuck [him] up’

Towards the end of the evening – at around 9/9.30 agent 104tango was able to verify that

he was present in Hythe, by answering a series of simple location specific questions; the

current location of the tram on Hythe pier, people in the local kebab shop, and proving his

presence by informing us of a car (model/colour) that he then drove past us, though direct

contact was never established.

There is always a person behind a spoofer however, and ultimately all that this act managed

to prove is that he lives in/around Hythe. The fact of the matter is that he has not been able

to sufficiently explain the erratic and frankly rather miraculous jumps he makes from Hythe

to Southampton and back again.

The amount of inconsistencies in this players travel seems to suggest some sort of aid,

such a spoofing tool, in response to which an appropriate investigation should be carried

out.
