Choi Gab-Bong clarifies: “Alcatel-Lucent excelled over other

 vendors in backplane and throughput performance. Even inthe poor environment of a subway, the operation was stable.

Moreover, Alcatel-Lucent offered strong technical support and

extensive training.” In terms of pricing, Alcatel-Lucent was

again ahead. Based on all these strengths, Seoul Metro decided

to install Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9700 units (backbone

switches) and Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 6850 units (work 

group switches).

inTenSive TrAining And TeChniCAL SuPPorT

The installation began in December 2007 and was completed

in one year. Because of the importance of the subway’s

continuous operation, all installation work had to be done

between the hours of 1 AM and 3 AM, when the subway was

closed. There was no architectural data available for the existing

rails, making the installation a real challenge. However, the

main contractor, LG DACOM, and Business Partner Jindoo IS

 were dedicated to doing whatever was necessary to successfully 

complete the installation.

 Alcatel-Lucent organized intensive, four to five week training at

Seoul Metro for 50 employees. Seoul Metro’s six line mangers

 will continue advanced training to earn Alcatel-Lucent CertifiedSwitch Professional licenses, which will qualify them to operate

 Alcatel-Lucent’s equipment as experts. Jindoo IS continues to

provide technical support on a 24 hour-a-day basis.

The integrated information and communication network 

includes an internal electronic approval system, MIS, ERP,

user management system, IP telephony, Internet and other

applications, which will be further developed gradually. A wireless

LAN will be installed to allow online management for operating

the electric rail cars. This will make it possible to remotely 

monitor electric equipment, signal systems and information

and communication facilities.

Choi Gab-Bong says: “I am completely satisfied with the

new network infrastructure that Alcatel-Lucent developed,

because applications as well as network infrastructure for

customer services have been installed.” He adds that the system

enhancement has remarkably reduced power consumption,

resulting in a greener and more cost-efficient IT system.

Business Partner Jindoo IS played an important role

from technical design to consulting, architectural

planning and installation.

The integrated IT system network has been installed in 124 sites

including headquarters, annexes, stations and rolling stock 

depots. It will also be installed in three Line 3 stations, when

construction there is completed.

This project is unprecedented internationally as well as locally.

The large-scale Metro Ethernet network (300 OS 9000 & 750 OS

6850 POE Switches) with RRSTP Layer 2 and OSPF in Layer 3,

is the largest single project of its kind in the world. Seoul Metro

uses two OmniSwitch 9700 units and four or five OmniSwitch 

6850 POE switches in each station, for redundant network design

throughout edge, aggregation and core networks. This project

 will significantly enhance Seoul Metro’s efficiency and power

consumption, moving towards the trend for green IT. Last but

not least, with OmniSwitch’s Green Technology, Seoul Metro

 will save several million USD in energy costs over a five year

period, and 20% to 80% savings on the cooling and back-up

power system.

Thanks to the successful upgrading of its information and

communication network, key subway operator Seoul Metro is

now attracting keen attention from the operators of subway Lines

5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, and from regional subway operators. This will

create a big ripple effect on corporations and local governments

that are considering their own nationwide networks. With this

project, Alcatel-Lucent has proven its excellent equipmentperformance and technical support with a local government.
