EventCity ManchesterExcels with Huawei10G Campus NetworkSolutionsHuawei 10G Campus Network Providesa Modern, Extremely Reliable and Ultra-Fast Network to the UK's Premier ExhibitionSpace

BackgroundEventCity Manchester is the leading event, exhibition and conference venue in the North of England. With a population of approximately 6.8 million people nearby, EventCity Manchester is the 2nd largest event space outside of London, and the most dynamic and growing event brand in the UK. Established in 2010, the facility includes 4 halls totalling 36,000 sq meters. EventCity Manchester holds more than 45 events, concerts, conferences, and exhibitions each year.Recent highlights include X-Factor Live auditions (Manchester), the UK Wedding Show, and the Caravan and Motor Show. The mission of EventCity

Manchester is to provide the best exhibition space in the UK, with superior services that exceed the needs of their customers. Services that allow the event organizers and exhibitors to provide the visitor with an outstanding overall experience, one where the visitor is motivated to engage with the exhibitors, make lifestyle purchase decisions, and communicate their experiences to family, friends, colleagues (and the world) through modern tools such as social media. The management of EventCity Manchester realized early on that ICT, and specifically a scalable, reliable and fast local network, was key to customer satisfaction. For EventCity, the challenge was to

5

build an infrastructure that would meet their current ICT requirements, while at the same time be flexible and scalable enough to accommodate new technologies and challenges for the next 5-10 years. Therefore, in concert with their ICT partner The Hub Group, EventCity decided to implement a modern and forward-thinking ICT environment with Huawei's 10G campus network solution as its foundation.

"Peel has ambitious goals for the future, including the expansion of MediaCityUK, investment in hotels, airports and leisure facilities, plus the plan to invest 50 billion GPB over the next 50 years in the Ocean Gateway project. To reach these goals, Peel will need strong partners that can provide innovative solutions with global support, partners like Huawei."

John Armitage-IT Manager, The Peel Group

Key challenges

"If the visitor has a good experience, the exhibitors have a good experience, then the organizers have a good experience, then the organizers get repeat business. This is the business model behind EventCity."

Andy Orr, Managing Director, EventCity

EventCity realizedsignificant andmeasureable benefits inupgrading to the Huawei10G Campus Solution, with room to grow theirbusiness over the life ofthe network. An importantbenefit which wasimmediately noticed byEventCity's customerswas the much improvedability to access thenetwork during peaktimes due to the upgradeto 10G. >>

When EventCity opened in 2011, their business model was quite straightforward: to provide the best exhibition services in the country. Initial efforts focused on creating a unique and versatile space with all the physical requirements that major events require. However, EventCity Manchester was not expected to grow so quickly (for example, winning the X-Factor Live Auditions Manchester), so the initial ICT infrastructure was soon oversubscribed. Prior to engaging with The Hub Group, the core ICT network was made up of a mixture of ad hoc switches and routers from various vendors. However, it rapidly became apparent that in order to provide the services demanded by exhibitors and visitors, EventCity required an ultra-fast, reliable, and flexible network.Although the services required by EventCity's customers can vary depending on the type of show, there is a consistent demand for reliable and high-speed networking. Services required include high-speed Internet access, VPN access, online payments/point of sale transactions, remote office access, video conferencing, CCTV, and IPTV.

SolutionThe Hub Group analyzed EventCity's business model and their existing infrastructure and determined the following requirements for the new network:• Bandwidth and scalability: In order to serve a large number of concurrent event visitors, EventCity Manchester requires a network with capacity for a large number of simultaneous

6

users, plus room for highbandwidth applications such as video gaming or video.• Support for BYOD: Each exhibitor and visitor to the exhibition site brings their own devices. Therefore, EventCity acts as an ISP and must have a strong BYOD policy in place.• Resiliency, reliability and high availability: The network must be able to deliver high levels of uptime during events. The equipment must be able to survive in the rugged environment of an active exhibition hall• Energy saving network design: Due to the large size of EventCity, power consumption is extremely important. The space uses a signifi cant amount of power (including a Phase 3 circuit board), so any power savings can be passed onto event organizers.EventCity and their parent company Peel enjoy an excellent working relationship with Huawei partner The Hub Group, and have sought their advice on the infrastructure upgrade. While this project initially focused on only EventCity Manchester, Peel understood that in order to achieve their worldwide growth goals (in property, ports, media, hotels, advertising, renewable energy, etc.), they would require an innovative, dynamic, flexible and global ICT provider. Peel needed better economies of scale from a full-service ICT vendor that could standardize ICT solutions across the entire company. Therefore, The Hub Group recommended Huawei's 10G Campus Network Solution should serve as a model for future network upgrades across the Peel Group. The Huawei network deployed by EventCity Manchester consists of two Huawei S6700 24 EI Mainframe switches used as the core switches, one Eudemon 200e-X3 AC Host Firewall with content manger license, six Huawei S5700 28c PWR EI Mainframe switches, and three Huawei S5700 52c PWR EI Mainframe switches.

Customer BenefitsEventCity realized signifi cant and measureable benefits in upgrading to the Huawei 10G Campus Solution, with room to grow their business over the life of the network. An important benefi t which was immediately noticed by EventCity's customers was the much improved ability to access the network during peak times due to the upgrade to 10G.

"At any point during an event at EventCity Manchester, we can have 14,000 visitors at the site, with up to 35,000 over a weekend. From the start, the Huawei network provided a much better event experience for our customers, by allowing virtually all our attendees to log-on and use our services."

Andy Orr, Managing Director, EventCity

7

The new network helps EventCity to attract major exhibitions that would have been impossible without the high-bandwidth provided by the 10G Campus Network. An example of the high-end of network requirements faced by EventCity Manchester was the Play Expo Video game exhibition, held in October 2012, with over 250 exhibitors. Each one required an ultra-fast/low latency connection for video game demos and contests.

"The Play Expo event is a perfect example of how EventCity is benefiting from the Huawei network. This event required enormous amounts of bandwidth for the various demos from X-Box, EA Sports, Nintento, Sony, SEGA and others - with all wanting to download to YouTube instantaneously. Without the capacity of our network, we would have been facing some angry video-gamers, but indeed the event was a big success and will return in 2013."

Andy Orr, Managing Director, EventCity

Another key benefit of the Huawei solution was support for BYOD. With Huawei Eudemon firewall and content manager license in place, EventCity Manchester is now able to safely and securely offer BYOD to its customers, while maintaining a secure environment as it delivers Internet Access to a large number of visitors. By using the Huawei firewall, EventCity is able to protect its network while providing a secure environment for its visitors. Green IT and environmental responsibility are not just slogans for EventCity and Peel, rather these are critical parts of their business. The Peel Group is a major power utility in the north of England, with large investments in low-carbon technologies such as wind, tidal and hydro. And for EventCity, power consumption is a critical business expense, with any power savings being passed on to their customers.

"Huawei was attractive to us due to the energy saving green design built-in to the switches. We know Huawei can build both rugged and energy saving equipment, due to their vast experience in building global telecom networks in places where power availability is quite difficult."

Andy Orr, Managing Director, EventCity

Finally, Huawei offered a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that its competitors simply could not match. The Huawei 10G solution was priced competitively with other vendors' 1G network offerings, making the overall cost of the Huawei solution to be significantly less (in price and complexity).

"The business of EventCity is exploding: a larger number of clients plus larger and more complex events. As the business grows, so do the IT requirements. It does not take rocket science to work out that there is no point in installing a 1GE limited network, and then in 18-24 months we must rip it out, when we can get a 10GE network from Huawei for the same price." Vodat International and Huawei Enterprise Team Together To ProvideSecure and Effective Managed Network Services to UK Retailers

BackgroundThe retail business in the UK has never been more competitive. With large-sized retailers maximizing their supply chain and continually driving down prices, plus the ever increasing expansion of online shopping, today’s retailer faces a number of urgent challenges. They must find new and innovative ways to draw customers to the store, and to ensure that the customer buys in-person and not at a discount online retailer. At the same time, cost pressure means that IT budgets are under fire while the IT department is expected to do even more with less. Point of Sale (POS) and Inventory Control systems must work perfectly at each outlet, while the geographic placement of many outlets (across the UK and the world) means that the network consists of connections from a number of different

telecommunications services providers. The mission of Vodat International, in business since 2002, is to help UK retailers to meet these challenges by maximizing their IT investments (in terms of both technology and IT skills) while keeping costs manageable. Vodat does this by offering advanced and reliable managed services and telecom solutions to the UK retail industry. Vodat’s target customer base are retail companies with between 20 and 1,500 retail outlets (plus one or more main office and distribution centers). Vodat’s customers (which include companies such as LUSH, Aurora Fahions, Supergroup, and the British Heart Foundation) number more than 80 in the UK, with 7,000+ retail locations. The company focuses on Tier 2 retail companies, whose IT department may not have the resources or

Huawei’s Core Routers, Access Switches and Managed Firewalls enable the UK’s premier managed services provider to provide world-class services to UK retail customers. >>

experience to manage a large Wide Area Network (WAN). Vodat has approximately 40 employees and houses its equipment at two data centers in greater London and one in Leeds. Some of the services Vodat offers to its customers using Huawei-provided solutions include:• ManagedNetworkServices:A secure and proactively managed MPLS network. A typical Vodat customer will be provided with fiber Ethernet-grade circuits to HQ and distribution offices, and ADSL or FTTC services to each retail location.• ManagedInternetServices: Secure, managed and monitored Internet access for retail locations.• ManagedFirewall: An optional add-on to Managed Network Services• ManagedPaymentServices:Chip & Pin facilities fully managed over their own MPLS network.

Key ChallengesVodat began to offer managed network services to its retail customers from about 2003 onwards, using leased MPLS services from various UK telecom service providers. By 2010, Vodat had a sufficient customer base to build and operate its own network.

“We have always provided managed network services to our customers, but until 3 years ago we did not have enough connections to justify building and operating our own network. At that point, we decided to buy our own routing and switching equipment, lease the telecom connections, and manage our own network.”

Roy Reynolds, Technical Director, Vodat International

Prior to building its own network, Vodat had faced some key challenges by leasing MPLS services from UK carriers. This limited their ability to proactively manage the network. Instead of diagnosing line faults itself, Vodat was at the mercy of their telecom provider to inform them about (and repair) faults. Also, by leasing MPLS services, Vodat was limited in the bandwidth options it could offer customers. Finally, the resale of MPLS as had a negative impact on Vodat’s margins as the costs for leased services were significantly more expensive than only leasing unmanaged circuits (as Vodat does now).

SolutionFor Vodat, the answer was to build and manage their own MPLS network using

Vodat owned/managed switches and routers in conjunction with leased lines from major UK carriers such as BT, Vodafone, Talk Talk and Virgin Media.I n o r d e r t o m e e t t h e i r c u s t o m e r requirements, Vodat created an innovative managed network solution for their retail clients, one that would allow them to easily connect numerous retail locations to all distribution and HQ offices, plus to each other. In order to build this network, Vodat needed an ICT vendor that could provide for the following requirements:• Scalable: Vodat needed to build a network that could grow with them, specifically as Vodat added new customers, and as their existing customers'bandwidth requirements grew.• Easy to Monitor: Vodat’s unique selling point is to fully monitors its customers networks and will note and fixfailuresevenbeforethecustomernotices a problem.• Reliabi l i ty: Vodat’s customers r e q u i r e r e l i a b i l i t y i n o r d e r t o successfully compete in the retail market. Failed connections have the potentialtocausesignificantfinancialdamage to their clients.• Flexible: The network needs to work with devices and routers from multiple vendors.• Excellent TCO: Vodat entered the managed services market by using leased MPLS services from UK telecoms, but this resulted in lower than acceptable margins. To be successful financially, Vodat had to build and operate its own cost-effective network.Based on these requirements, Vodat spoke with a number of network equipment vendors, but only Huawei could offer the combination of performance, TCO and flexibility required.

"Huawei was the only vendor (at the time) that could provide us with an initial network that met our needs, but that could also grow with us. The Huawei product line was at the time very unique in that it had a range of routers where we could start small and increase the capacity of the network

10

by adding new modules and upgrading the chassis, without having to rip out and replace every piece of equipment we had purchased previously."

Roy Reynolds, Technical Director, Vodat International

Huawei worked closely with Vodat to design and implement a managed network solution. The core network includes 3 Huawei NE40E Routers, 3 Huawei S9300 Routers, and 2 Huawei USG 5120s Managed Firewalls.

Customer BenefitsFor Vodat, a very significant (and perhaps surprising) benefit of working with Huawei was the deep support, customization and direct connections to Huawei's R&D staff. Huawei’s innovative products are directly related to its commitment to R&D. In fact, over 45% (70,000) of Huawei’s employees are dedicated to R&D. As Vodat rolled out managed firewall services for its customers, they identified new features and functionalities that would enhance their services. Vodat turned to Huawei in the UK to make these suggestions, and soon were in direct to the Firewall R&D dept and were speaking to senior engineers. A number of the enhancements were adopted by Huawei for not only Vodat but the customer base worldwide.

"With the direct contact with Huawei engineers in UK and China, we had all the direct support we could ask for. And that has not changed. We still maintain direct contact with the various departments in Huawei, so if we need some help technically and commercially, we have the right people to speak to."

Roy Reynolds, Technical Director, Vodat International

Vodat business decision to build and operate its own network (rather than lease MPLS services from other carriers) was quite entrepreneurial, as the return on investment clearly required business growth. With this in mind, Vodat needed to build a flexible and scalable network, one that could start with adequate bandwidth and capacity, but not one that required an over-investment in upfront costs. Vodat required a network that could grow as their customer base grew. Huawei was the only competitor able to offer the scalability from the start, but within the overall budget of Vodat.

"The ability for us to buy a core router that we could upgrade quickly with a new module was important to us. What we were looking for was something that was scalable and could grow with the business as network capacity increased. This did not exist with Huawei’s competitors when we built the network in

Page 13: Case Studies - Altech Enterprise · PDF fileHuawei SSD Storage Makes Headlines for Der Spiegel. Bringing Multi-modal Enterprise Collaboration to Your Fingertips P34 P36 P38 P40 P32

11

2010. With the Huawei range, if you start with a smaller NE40 router you can move up to a bigger one and take the modules with you to increase the capacity as you go."

Roy Reynolds, Technical Director, Vodat International

Vodat has also enjoyed excellent performance and flexibility from the Huawei solution. Downtime has been minimal, and failover times are sub 50ms using Huawei routers. According to Roy Reynolds "Huawei had BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detection) before its competitors and we noticed as soon as we put the core network in, as it helped us detect failures and gave us sub 50ms failover."In terms of inter-operability and flexibility, the Huawei network has worked very well with non-Huawei equipment installed at the edge of the Vodat network. Finally, the overall TCO for the project was excellent and allowed Vodat to build out their network much more quickly and effectively than the competitive alternatives offered. Specifically, Vodat enjoyed the following cost savings over the life of the network:• Initial outlay: The Huawei solution’s initial network cost was 30%-40% lower than competitive offers.• Power Consumption: Since power availability is quite limited for UK data centers, this was a major consideration for Vodat. The Hauwei solution offered excellent power consumption.• Training: According to Vodat, the training on Huawei equipment for its engineers was much less than expected. This was largely due to the ease of cross-training Vodat engineers that were already trained for other major networking vendors.• Data Center Space: The size of the Huawei solution was significantly less than competitors, which helped Vodat achieve significant cost savings due to the high costs of data center space in the UK:

“We can get more performance in a smaller box from Huawei. In London, where you are paying 20,000 GBP for a single rack, if you can get a smaller unit that gives superior performance this is ideal. Huawei gives us a solution that is one-third the size of competitors and that uses less power. That is the type of device you need in colo facilities where rack space and power are expensive.”

Roy Reynolds, Technical Director, Vodat International

As of mid-2013, Vodat is in the process of installing a Huawei S7706 Gigabit Enterprise Switch for use in its own private (internal) network. This will replace 6 older (non-Huawei) switches and will provide increased capacity, bandwidth and performance.

10-Gigabit LANSwitches, Helping Buildan Online PaymentPlatform with TrillionRMB TransactionsData Center Network Project for Alipay

BackgroundAlipay, as a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, is a global leading third-party online payment platform in China, providing simple, safe, and quick online payment services (such as e-payment, secured payment, and mobile payment) to millions of users and businesses. The application of Alipay in online shopping eliminates users' concerns for the safety of their payment.About 300 million users registered with Alipay in the past 10 years. The daily turnover increases from CNY200 million per day to CNY1.5 billion per day, and the annual turnover reaches about CNY400 billion. It is predicted that the annual turnover of Alipay will reach CNY1 trillion by 2014. Due to the fast-growing Alipay services, Alibaba Group realized that the traditional data network cannot

bear the highspeed and secure exchange of massive Alipay services data. Therefore, Alibaba Group decided to build a new data exchange platform.

Key ChallengesOnline transaction is an emerging e-commerce industry. Enterprises exchange products and service information over the Internet, which poses high requirements on information integrity, transmission timeliness, and network security and stability. Taobao services involve massive picture transmission, which requires network devices to support line-rate data processing capabilities. In addition, unpredictable data growth poses higher demands on the redundancy capability and reliability of network devices. For example, on September 11, 2011 (the Single's Day), about

Page 17: Case Studies - Altech Enterprise · PDF fileHuawei SSD Storage Makes Headlines for Der Spiegel. Bringing Multi-modal Enterprise Collaboration to Your Fingertips P34 P36 P38 P40 P32

15

To handle the unpredictable data growth in theon-line payment, Huawei provided a 10-gigabitLAN switches based data center solution forAlipay, which not only ensured secure andhighly efficient operation of Alipay financialservices but also met the demands of fastservices increasing. >>

3.42 million users flooded into Taobao Web site within 1 minute from the time that online shopping carnival began. The transaction volume soared to CNY100 million after 8 minutes, CNY200 million after 21 minutes, and CNY2 billion at 16:00, generating approximately 10 million orders. Therefore, a network with huge data transportation and capability was required to cope with the massive and high-speed online transactions. A secure and reliable 10-gigabit throughput data network was necessary to deal with this kind of situation.

SolutionTo handle the unpredictable data growth, Huawei provided a 10-gigabit LAN switches based data center solution that has the following compelling features:• Allow for the online payment platform to process trillion RMB transactionsThe Huawei S9306 LAN switch supports the access of approximately 300 gigabit servers with dual network adapters. The large capacity (2 Tbit/s) and high-density ports (576 gigabit ports per device) allow for the additions of massive new servers.• Flattened networkthat is capable of handling burst data traffic with its nonblocking switching capabilitiesA two-layer flattened network structure and a 200-millisecond large-capacity data packets cache ensure non-blocking and high-speed data switching.• FlexibletrafficschedulingtoavoidsecurityrisksBundled 10-gigabit links are deployed between S9306s and are deployed as uplinks of S9306s to achieve load sharing and avoid single points of failure (SPOFs). Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol(MSTP) is enabled to prevent broadcast storms.• Powerful performance and large scale deployment globallyHuawei S9306 LAN switch supports up to 2 Tbit/s switching and 1 Gbit/s forwarding capabilities and 120 Gbit/s bandwidth for each slot, offering secure, reliable, and timely financial transaction services to online payment customers all over the world.

Customer Benefits• Huawei helped Alipay to build a stable data center network, which ensured secure and high-efficient service of Alipay online payment.• Huawei's solution met the requirements of supporting the keep-increasing data transmission of Alipay (Alipay predicted that the transaction volume in 2014 would break CNY1 trillion) with large capacity and high port density devices.

Large-Capacity BearerPlatform, EnsuringReliable NetworkTransactionAlibaba Optical Transport Network (OTN) Project

BackgroundAlibaba Group is China's largest and the world's second largest Internet-based company that operates diversified Internet-based business to facilitate easy online sales from anywhere in the world. At present, Alibaba's business reaches Internet users in more than 240 countries and regions around the world.

Key ChallengesAlibaba Group has set up many businesses and affi liated entities, such as Taobao Marketplace, Alipay, Tmall.com, and Alibaba Cloud Computing. Several major integrated data centers (IDCs) are responsible for the massive data services generated between the headquarters and subsidiaries, between subsidiaries, and between the subsidiaries and carriers, so IDC interconnection is critical. Here were the challenges below:

• Fast and unpredictable service growthService bandwidth must be continuously increased to match unpredictable service growth (for example, when sellers promote various special offers in holidays, access and transaction volume increases sharply, requiring massive service bandwidth).• Fiber direct connections and increased network complexitySince the optical interfaces of routers were directly connected to each other, the fiber connections between IDCs became increasingly complicated. Fiber cuts would interrupt services, and service interruptions would slow down user access speeds.• Leased fi bers with high fault rate and poor controllabilityWhen a fiber fault occurred, the maintenance department could only negotiate with the bandwidth provider to resolve the problem, which results in unpredictable fault resolution timelines and complicated maintenance work.

• Increased network protect ion to improve the network robustnessWDM technology simplifies the physical fiber connections. Besides, ODUk level's subnetwork connection protection (SNCP) technology (dual transmission and selective receiving) is used to implement service switchover within 50 ms in the event of fiber cuts.C u s t o m i z e d O & M t o e n s u r e 2 4 / 7 troubleshootingHuawei provides 24/7 maintenance services, ensuring quick response to network faults. In addit ion, Huawei 's U2000 network management platform notifies maintenance engineers of network alarm information by SMS as soon as they occur.

Customer BenefitsHuawei provided a large-capacity OTN for Alibaba, featuring flexible services expansion capabilities, allowing them to keep up with growing service demands and speed up IDC deployment. In addition, the OTN simplified the fiber direct connection network structure by reducing the number of fiber links that couldn't be directly controlled, thereby reducing the network fault rate by more than 60%. Huawei offered excellent network protection capabilities and a customized network management platform, which ensured smooth operation of the network and services.

Alibaba encountered theincreasingly outstanding problems, especially the risk in quality ofservice, stability of network andexpeditiousness of fault recovery.Huawei provided a large-capacityOTN for Alibaba, featuring flexibleservices expansion capabilities, allowing them to keep up withgrowing service demands, simplifythe physical network and reducethe pressure on operation andmaintenance. >>

SolutionBy using the existing IDC equipment rooms as service nodes, the new OTN nodes connected the headquarters with subsidiaries of Alibaba by leasing carriers' fibers. In the first phase, six IDCs were connected to this OTN network. In the second phase, the number of IDCs increased to 8. Huawei OTN solution has the following advanced features:• Large-capacity design to meet growing service demands and simplify the networkHuawei used OSN8800 devices to construct an 80-wavelength DWDM system. The transmission rate for a single wavelength can be upgraded to 10 Gbit/s, 40 Gbit/s or 100 Gbit/s. Services with up to 8 Tbit/s (80-wavelength * 100G) transmission rate can be scheduled on one pair of optical fiber. The solution not only reduced the leased quantity of optical fiber, but also considered the demands in several future years.• Flexible service grooming, convenient capacity expansion and rapid service launchAs to the service access and grooming, separated tributary-line architecture was used aiming at the uncertain time of flow pinnacle. This architecture means that access service is integrated and groomed by a unified crossconnection, and then redistributed to the specified circuit board for data transferring, which allows services on the live network to be unaffected during service expansion, line bandwidth upgrades, and network topology changes, as long as the related resources has been reserved. Capacity upgrade could be done on Alibaba's side, eliminating the need to to negotiate with carrier and facilitating greater control over fiber resources.

Large-scale Terminal ProtectionTerminal Security Project for FAW-VW

BackgroundFAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company (FAW-VW), founded on February 6, 1991, is a Chinese joint venture between First Automobile Works (FAW) and Volkswagen Group. FAW-VW established China's first modern passenger vehicle production base. The enterprise has almost 20,000 employees working in three major production bases in Changchun, Chengdu, and Foshan, and 500,000 employees working along the vehicle production chain in 1,000 related enterprises. In 2011, FAW-VW's sales volume amount exceeded CNY200 billion.

Key ChallengesFAW-VW's rapid development required a high number of communication terminals. They also faced challenges in security management, IT Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs, and employees work efficiency.Due to service and organizational expansion, this large, multi-regional enterprise had the following terminal security protection requirement:• Efficientmanagementandmaintenance

Challenges in large-scale network management included users with varying terminal usage skills, limited network management personnel, mass terminals asset management, and mass IT events such as terminal patches installation.• Reliable access control and user rights managementThe original terminal management system had no access control measures. All terminal connected to the network had full access right to all network resources. Repeated unauthorized access to the service system inflicted significant damage and enabled key information leaks; therefore, FAW-VW urgently needed to address this issue.• Comprehensive network protectionFAW-VW had massive network resources, which required a comprehensive network management system for network access control and user rights management to improve network security management efficiency.

SolutionHuawei deployed the Secospace Terminal Security Management (TSM) system to divide the intranet

into several logical parts, enabling centralized system management and domain-based security protection. Key devices deployed in redundancy mode ensured service continuity. The TSM performed access control on the network, terminals, and network boundaries. Security protection measures, such as user authentication, security check, access control, operation monitoring, emergency response, and log audition, ensure network security.• Centralized management, domain-based protection, and redundant network designHuawei provided the Secospace TSM system to centrally manage FAW-VW's terminals, enabling unified security policy customization. The TSM control server was deployed in each branch in redundancy mode to perform user authentications and security checks. The TSM management server was deployed at headquarters in redundancy mode to manage control servers in all branches. All network resources were classified into isolated, server, and office regions, based on service and security levels. Users access network resources are based on their assigned rights, which prevents unauthorized access.• LinkedaccesscontrolandrefineduserrightsmanagementHuawei installed client agents on all terminals accessing the network, and the TSM server connected terminals to the Security Access Control Gateway (SACG). The client agent authenticates users and confirms user network access rights through information interaction with the SACG. Refined user rights management policies ensured that users have only the access rights to resources required in their service of operation.• Comprehensive security protectionTSM provided security protection measures in network boundaries, network devices, and terminals for comprehensive network security protection. The TSM system client agent was installed on all access terminals. The system automatically collects and refreshes terminal information to manage terminal lifecycle, improving terminal management efficiency. A unified, stable, secure, and automatic patch upgrade mechanism performs security checks for all terminals to enable off-line policy control and management, prevented terminals from bypassing security authentication and improving employee efficiency. This terminal management solution has been adopted by Huawei, as a large enterprise like FAW-VW, for years. This mirrors our confidence in providing long-term solution services for FAW-VW.

Customer BenefitsThis green terminal system facilitates FAW-VW's terminal O&M. The unified, layered, and comprehensive intranet security management system enables predictive and active security protection.H u a w e i u s e s v a r i o u s i n d u s t r y terminal security check policies for a comprehensive security enhancement and protec t ion so lu t ion to assess terminal security status, securing and controlling all terminals. This facilitates FAW-VW security management policy implementation and regulation and code compliance. The solution has, on one hand, cut asset management costs and IT O&M, which enables network and terminal management performance in three major production bases with dozens of network management personnel; on the other hand promoted FAW-VW's future terminal expansion.

Building a Secure and Reliable National Broadcast PlatformData Communication Project for the CNTV Broadcast Platform

BackgroundChina Network Television (CNTV) is a national web-based TV broadcaster. The CNTV broadcast platform is the broadcast control center of Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services in China, which covers 12 provinces. The CNTV broadcast platform is responsible for pushing video programs, including live broadcast programs and Video on Demand (VoD) programs, to subsidiary broadcast platforms and receiving some video programs from the subsidiary broadcast platforms. The CNTV broadcast platform plays a key role in IPTV program broadcasting and must ensure program broadcasting security and reliability.

Key ChallengesAs the bearer network for all broadcast services, the data network is not only responsible for internal service interconnection but also secure and reliable

interconnection to subsidiary broadcast platforms. It ensures live broadcast programs are transferred from the CNTV broadcast platform to subsidiary broadcast platforms in a secure way. With the sharp increase in the number of routers connecting the CNTV broadcast platform to subsidiary broadcast platforms, the current CNTV broadcast platform was unable to satisfy the ever-growing service demands, so CNTV decided to build a new data network for the CNTV broadcast platform. CNTV faced several challenges while building this new data network, including:• ScalabilityFor all provincial broadcast platform, in order to access the CNTV broadcast platform, 40-80 155 Mbit/s POS links were required. However, the current core router was incapable of meeting these service expansion requirements.• Reliability The current core router adopted integrated single-

23

After thoroughly analyzing CNTV's network conditions and service demands, Huawei provided a hierarchical data network solution to satisfy different needs of multiple business areas, which simplified the network plan and ensured the high reliability and security. The solution created a safe and reliable broadcast control platform data network for CNTV, and protected the security of the country's IPTV broadcast. >>

core design. If the core router failed, all services would be affected. Also switches were deployed in redundancy mode (all traffic was transmitted along a single link), lacking link and device protection capabilities.Since a single link was used to connect the core router to all subsidiary broadcast platforms, the platform was relatively unreliable.• SecurityThe earlier CNTV broadcast platform covered only a few provinces, so it was easy to protect the CNTV broadcast platform by using an access control list (ACL). However, as the CNTV broadcast platform was expanded to more and more provinces, it became difficult to protect the CNTV broadcast platform using only the ACL, which had deteriorated the overall security. To ensure complete program broadcasting security, the platform needed security for both hardware and software.

SolutionAfter thoroughly analyzing CNTV's network conditions and service demands, Huawei provided a data network that was designed with multiple functional areas and layers, simplifying the network plan and ensuring high reliability and security. The data network solution has the following advanced features:• Multi-layer network design to improve network reliabilityDevices and links are configured in redundant mode to avoid single points of failure (SPOFs).Innovative IP FRR technology is used to ensure link reliability and implement fast protection switching (FPS) between links within 50 ms.Buffer queuing and hierarchical quality of service (HQoS) are used to minimize data loss and avoid various video image faults such as black burst, frame loss, and mosaics.• High-density cards to increase subsidiary broadcast platform access capabilities

Huawei NE40E-X high-end routers support POS interfaces with the highest density in the industry and thirty-two 155 Mbit/s links per slot (a maximum of five hundred and twelve 155 Mbit/s links), greatly increasing the access capabilities of subsidiary broadcast platforms.• Multiple functional areas to enhance the system securityFour independent firewalls are connected to the core router and core switch in bypass mode to deliver independent security policies to different business service areas, isolate business service areas from each other, and ensure secure control over the entire broadcast platform.

Customer BenefitsBy upgrading the existing CNTV broadcast platform and following the "multi-network-layer and multi-functional-area" design principle, the solution developed and implemented by Huawei provides the customer with the following benefits:• Increases network capacity and expands access bandwidth by more than three times.• E n h a n c e s n e t w o r k a n d p r o g r a m broadcasting security.

Huawei CloudbasedStorage LiftsDatastore365 intoIndustry Leadership

BackgroundDatastore365 provides easily managed, affordable, secure online backup to businesses, organizations and individuals throughout the UK and Europe. The company's customers range from one-person offices to large corporations with hundreds of locations. The Managed Service Provider (MSP) prides itself on providing future-proof solutions that can be tailored to the requirements of each business, ensuring that even small but fast growing businesses with limited IT budgets can be assured that their data is safeguarded.

Key ChallengesAlthough Datastore365 powered its secure online backup service with the award-winning Asigra Cloud BackupTM software, the actual hardware at the MSP's two data centers came from a variety of vendors, resulting in signifi cant time being spent on managing the different systems to ensure the highest possible performance; in fact, monitoring the multi-

vendor storage required the full-time commitment of skilled personnel. By the summer of 2010, business growth had pushed Datastore365's data vault to near capacity, and the company was starting to experience performance issues with their configuration. As a result, the company began looking for a new solution.

SolutionThe Datastore365 team evaluated a variety of different vendors in an attempt to find one that met all their requirements. The MSP's IT director, Gary Witts, commented: "We met with several industry-leading storage vendors, but couldn't fi nd a solution that ticked every box. Then value-added distributer Zycko recommended we take a look at Huawei's OceanStor N8000 series clustered Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions." The OceanStor N8000 series is a unified storage platform, which uses a full-redundancy design that ensures 99.999% availability and supports clustered NAS engine nodes in active/active mode (all requests are load-balanced across all

27

available processing capacity; if a failure occurs on a node, another node in the network intelligently takes up the slack).David Galton-Fenzi, Zycko's Group Sales and Marketing Director, explained: "We suggested the OceanStor N8300 as a solution for Datastore365 because it offers the ideal combination of reliability and affordability. In addition, its scalable design will allow them to improve capacity and performance independently of each other, while still hitting the right price point for their customers. The Asigra platform and Huawei solution marry well; the former provides secure, on-demand online back-up, and the latter supports this with highly-resilient, flexible storage, enabling Datastore365 to make its best-ofbreed service as competitive as possible." Zycko tested the NAS solution in its £1 million Cirencester lab with data provided by Datastore365. Galton-Fenzi continued: "Asigra Cloud Backup really gives arrays a good workout. Lab testing proved to Datastore365's technical team that the Huawei solution was up to the job."Installation at Datastore365's two data centers in Maidenhead and Milton Keynes was carried out by the vendor's own engineers, with Zycko assisting in migrating all of the MSP's customer data onto the new system.

Customer BenefitsOne of the main benefits of the implementation was the time saved due to no longer managing the multi-vendor system. Witts continued: "Before the new NAS solution was installed, we dedicated one team member to monitoring and checking the multiple vendor solutions at both our data centers — but now that the new storage is up and running, that employee has the opportunity to work on technical development projects, helping to grow the business. In-built features like the Integrated Storage Manager provide excellent management capability."Given this new combination of vendor solutions, Witts was apprehensive of potential growing pains, but any issues the MSP suffered from were soon resolved: "As a new combination, we were extremely impressed with the level of service and support from Huawei. They always gave us the impression that we were their top priority; at one point they were waking people up in the middle of the night and getting teams of engineers together to solve technical issues! As we were the first Asigra provider to use this hardware, we knew that we would be treading new ground, but with the impressive levels of customer service we received and the quality and price of the kit, we would happily recommend Huawei to other Asigra providers."

Datastore365, a Managed Service Provider (MSP) inthe United Kingdom, was achieving market successwith their cloud-based backup services. Ratherthan hire legions of new employees, Datastore365chose a Huawei cloud-based storage solution thatalmost runs itself. The result was that key technicalstaff could concentrate on important tasks andsupport the rapid expansion of new backupbusiness. >>

Huawei SSD StorageMakes Headlines forDer Spiegel

BackgroundDer Spiegel is a media brand known around the world, a brand synonymous with high-quality investigative journalism, in-depth coverage of important issues, and a photo-archive containing many of the signature news photographs of the past 60 years. Founded in 1947, Der Spiegel (part of SPIEGEL GROUP) is Germany's leading weekly print magazine, with a circulation of 950.000 issues and distribution to 177 countries. Der Spiegel also publishes number of other special magazines, which cover topics which ranging from culture, history, science, student-life and a monthly issue for children.Based in a new 'eco-friendly' building (Der Spiegel Haus) in Hamburg's HafenCity, Der Spiegel's 1,200 employees include 200 journalists who report on the news throughout Germany and worldwide through a series of 22 foreign bureaus. Der Spiegel is not only a print-oriented brand: since 1988 SPIEGEL TV has been a growing part of the business with two if its own TV channels and regular broadcasts on RTL and Sat.1. SPIEGEL ONLINE (www.spiegel.de) represents the digital side of the brand. Founded in 1994, the site reaches approximately 9.9 million domestic monthly users. Since 2004, SPIEGEL

ONLINE has also distributed content in English which adds 1.5-2 million global monthly users. At least 57% of SPIEGEL ONLINE's readers have a high level of education, and with 138 million visits and over 768 million page impressions per month (as of 2011), so the online presence is a very attractive audience for advertisers. SPIEGEL.TV is also part of SPIEGEL ONLINE, and an average of 1.8 million visitors per month watch online each month.

Key ChallengesICT is critical to the business of Der Spiegel. The organization has a digital archive of over 34 million photos, articles and documents and its publication process is completely automated. A system failure would be disastrous, resulting in a delay in publication or content delivery which could cost the organization millions of euros per day. Therefore, the ICT infrastructure must be robust, scalable and most importantly, highly reliable. The ICT infrastructure consists of over 100+ servers (Windows, Linux, and OS X) in two physically separate data centers. The majority of the servers have been virtualized, although some specific key tasks still run on dedicated servers. For a media-company like Der Spiegel, storage is

29

one that is growing fast in its ICT infrastructure, and one that has a critical impact on the business. Storage requirements are varied, but include providing instant access to the complete photo, video and print article archive for reporters on a deadline, storage of ultra-large files for magazine printing, plus traditional uses such as email, FTP-Server and database storage. The system stores approximately 200 TB of data, which is growing rapidly. The original storage infrastructure consisted of a SAN network which is managed/virtualized using FalconStor's Network Storage Server (NSS) solution. The NSS provides increased flexibility in SAN management and a centralized storage administration. As the magazine storage requirements grew, the SAN network grew in size. The growing SAN was not able to keep up with increasing performance demands as new and more complex applications were placing on the system. The traditional (SATA) disk arrays became the bottleneck, making access to key application data too slow.

SolutionSimply adding more SATA disks was not the solution, as this would be quite costly and would only erode system performance; therefore Der Spiegel turned to its trusted advisor Itiso for a solution. Itiso (a Huawei partner) is a consulting and IT solutions provider in Germany that focuses on data management, storage, backup, archiving, virtualization and cloud computing. Itiso had implemented the existing SAN network and FalconStor management at Der Spiegel, so they were very familiar with the business and technical needs. Following an extensive analysis of the existing storage network, the business requirements and the new performance goals, Der Spiegel and Itiso outlined the following requirements for upgrade:• Increase overall system performance: Der Spiegel needed an increase in its storage network performance, specifically an increase in IOPS (input/output operations per second) and reduction in latency.• Reduce/eliminate database performance bottlenecks: Der Spiegel was experiencing signifi cant bottlenecks in various database applications (including Microsoft SQL cluster and Lotus Notes).• Reliability: The storage network must deliver the highest levels of uptime as the

Der Spiegel, Germany's leading weekly print magazine, was quickly moving into online, mixed-media operations, but their back-office IT systems were unable to supportthe speed and urgency required for digital media. Byusing Huawei's Dorado 2100 Solid State Disk (SSD)system, Der Spiegel not only improved response time, butfound new ways to capture audiences through advancedtechniques. >>

organization continuously runs on short publication deadlines.• Scalability: As the storage requirements of Der Spiegel grow, the storage network must be able to grow in a modular and cost-effective way.• Excellent TCO: Total cost of ownership (TCO) is vital to Der Spiegel. This includes the purchase cost, long-term maintenance costs, data center space, and power consumption. Additionally, Der Spiegel needed to maintain its existing investment in SATA storage, so any upgrade would have to be integratable with the existing SAN infrastructure.Based on their analysis, Itiso advised that adding SSD storage to the existing SAN architecture was the right option.Huawei worked closely with Itiso and Der Spiegel to design and implement a SSD storage system that met all of the requirements. The result was the implementation of two Huawei Dorado2100 SSD Storage systems, each containing 24 SSD disks with a capacity of 100 GB per disk. The total storage capacity for each Dorado2100 is 2.4 TB, resulting in an overall capacity of 4.8 TB.The solution supports the FalconStor management platform and is used by the 6 ESX-Hosts (VMWare) and the 300 VMs (virtual machines) running on them. In addition to middleware and normal offi ce automation types of uses, the platform supports the critical Quark Publishing Platform (a primary publishing system).

Customer BenefitsThe performance benefits of the Dorado system were felt immediately by Der Spiegel:

"Performance has demonstrably improved within the entire storage network.

What took us minutes to write to the SATA drives now takes seconds with Huawei's Dorado solution."

-Robert Kiehne, IT Manager, Der Spiegel

Compared with the traditional disk array architecture, the full-SSD architecture delivers sharply improved performance. Based on Storage Performance Council (SPC-1) benchmarks, the Dorado2100 reaches 100,000 IOPS with 600 us average latency. The reliability of the Dorado system at Der Spiegel has been excellent. Full redundancy for power supplies, fans, and BBUs guarantees data reliability. With its roots in the telecom carrier sector, Huawei builds carrier-grade reliability into all its products.Power consumption and data center space have also been significantly reduced through the Dorado2100. Der Spiegel realized up to 90% power savings compared with a traditional disk array through the low-power consumption of only 320 W per single enclosure. At only 2U in size, the Dorado takes up significantly less space (to reach 100,000 IOPS would require 48 U of traditional disk array).Scalability is there for Der Spiegel as its storage requirements grow. The Dorado supports a flexible number and layout of 8 Gb/s FC host ports, which means the stacking of 8 additional units is possible.

"Der Spiegel had some very specific requirements for SSD storage. We looked around and determined that the Dorado2100 solution from Huawei met our requirements. With Dorado we were able to consolidate the number of disks significantly, resulting in much improved performance. Furthermore, the purchase cost and TCO were excellent, which made it an easy choice for us." -Robert Kiehne, IT Manager, Der Spiegel

IMG Wins Gold withHuawei Solution

BackgroundIMG Media House (a unit of IMG Worldwide, the global sports, fashion, and media company), relies on their IT storage solution to deliver high quality footage to broadcasters. The industry as a whole is currently focused on satellite and fiber channel delivery, with 90% of footage being delivered this way; however, the industry is quickly moving to digital delivery, and IMG expects that 90% of all footage will be delivered via digital channels within fi ve years.

Key ChallengesWhen looking for an IT storage partner, IMG's biggest challenge was fi nding a supplier who understood their complex and varied demands. The company's Service Level Agreements (SLAs) measure delivery by the second. Such a time-sensitive environment required an IT storage solution with high bandwidth and high reliability, which could cope with extensive archiving, fast retrieval, and post-production editing. They needed someone who understood their zero-failure operational environment and who could deliver an affordable and scalable solution, which allowed IMG to respond to the growing demand for digital delivery. IMG also needed a progressive environment solution – one that could meet broadcasters' incessant demands for real-time footage.

SolutionBy t aking t ime to unde r s t and cus tome r requirements, Huawei could deliver a solution that effectively and affordably addressed each of IMG's complex and varied demands. Rather than offer different solutions for different challenges (i.e., one unit for archiving, one for post-production and one for delivery), Huawei delivered blade servers to meet the full range of the customer's needs. This approach will also help IMG move into the cloud environment and adopt future virtualization. This opportunity for virtualization ensures that the solution is suitably fl exible and scalable, with a built-in growth plan, cutting costs per storage capacity unit as the solution is scaled up and more disks and racks are added. The approach also accounts for the urgent nature of the broadcast environment. When adding greater capacity, traditional storage solutions must be stopped for re-indexing information, and then restarted. From a business standpoint, this lost time is unacceptable. Using the Huawei solution, IMG can change and add drives gradually, with no need to restart the system. In addition to being effi cient, affordable and fast, this gradual change also reduces the chance of failure. Mean-time-tofailure is often batched, and the gradual change in disks removes this element of risk. A progressive environment eliminates downtime and delays from major step changes in the capacity of the storage, assuring IMG

37

of a high performance, alwayson storage solution.

Customer BenefitsHuawei works closely with customers, enabling them to offer a high level of service quality and to ensure that their solution remains tailored to the demands of the market. The storage provider often uses a simple approach – such as considering the drive population of the chassis – to make a significant difference in performance. In an environment where every second counts, and each image must be better than the last, this process of continual improvement, aligned with excellent customer service, ensures that the solution meets IMG's current and future needs. Shane Warden, General Manager at IMG Media House explains:

"What has really impressed us has been the quality of the technology, combined with the creative approach of the Huawei engineers. We spoke to other suppliers, who told us that what we wanted couldn't be done. Huawei didn't seem to hit the same walls as others — they worked hard to understand the broadcast arena and find a solution which delivered on our needs."

For their latest project, IMG Media chose the Huawei N8000 NAS system, which can support multiple media types and streams. Through horizontal and vertical independent scaling, the solution delivers the performance and capacity to exactly match IMG's current and future capacity and performance needs. This comprehensive flexibility reduces IMG's capacity and performance planning for the London event in 2012, overcoming challenges, and diminishing overall business costs. Mario Fan, General Manager at Huawei Western Europe Enterprise summarizes:

"Our work with IMG has allowed us a valuable insight into the broadcast market and its requirements. The work we've done tailoring our solutions for IMG has been fed back to our R&D department, and some of the features are already in development to become standard across our range of storage solutions."

Preparing for a onceevery-four-years event is adaunting challenge, evenfor an experienced firm likeIMG Media House. Huaweidelivered an innovativecomputing and storagesolution that meets thechallenges of digitaldelivery in a broadcastenvironment using acreative approach withcutting-edge technicalsolutions. >>

OBC Fulfils Venture Capital Potential with Huawei Storage

BackgroundThe Online Backup Company (OBC) is Norway's largest provider of online backup and disaster recovery solutions for private and public businesses. It was founded by two Norwegian entrepreneurs in 2005 and has since experienced a total growth of 1,221 percent. The company's customer portfolio now includes approximately 4,000 corporate customers. In 2011, OBC made it onto Deloitte's Fast 50 Norway and Fast 500 EMEA Technology lists of Europe's fastest growing technology companies, as well as securing the Gaselle award for the second consecutive year. OBC secured €6.47 million in venture capital funding from Northzone in January 2012 to expand into Europe.

Key ChallengesOBC was experiencing problems with its existing storage. The set-up was not suitable for bigger clients with strenuous service level agreements. The incumbent solution's scalability was not sufficient for the business expansion, given OBC's ambitious European expansion plans following its venture

capital investment. Then it required a storage platform suitable for larger clients with increased input/output requirements that would allow them to capably offer one of the leading data backup services in Europe.

SolutionThe new solution comprised of two parts: the storage software and the actual storage data. Asigra's enterprise-class cloud backup software was selected to fulfill the software requirement before the storage was evaluated. Based on the process ing power and va lue proposition of vendors, Huawei's OceanStor N8000 series were chosen by the customer. Gareth Dryden, product manager at value-added distributor Zycko, explained: "Asigra is a top-end platform and requires tier-one storage. We know Huawei well and have been very successful with them in the European channel because of their value and reputation for engineering excellence and speed. We brought Asigra and Huawei together to organize on-premise demonstrations for OBC's technical team."The successful Huawei Asigra demonstration was

Page 53: Case Studies - Altech Enterprise · PDF fileHuawei SSD Storage Makes Headlines for Der Spiegel. Bringing Multi-modal Enterprise Collaboration to Your Fingertips P34 P36 P38 P40 P32

51

outperformed the rival storage platform. Dryden detailed the reasons: "The rival solution was suitable for large files but struggled with smaller ones. The Asigra solution uses hundreds of millions of small files at once, and the Huawei OceanStor series handled these demands with ease. Once this was demonstrated, the choice became obvious for OBC."OBC opted for two three-node N8300 OceanStor clustered NAS units with 200 TB of usable space each for the primary data center in Norway and Sweden and one three-node N8300 OceanStor clustered NAS with 300 TB of usable space for the disaster recovery site in Sweden. Zycko designed the solution configuration and the logistics before Huawei’s engineers went in to perform the installation.Dryden continued: "Fast network-attached storage allows a managed service provider to easily write the data before moving it to a SAN. It uses a network file system to categorize and service the data before presenting it to the storage network. According to the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) NFS Benchmark Mid Range Storage results, the OceanStor NAS has the best performance in the world and was therefore perfect for OBC's requirements."

Customer BenefitsThe storage solution has already allowed OBC to step up its new business activities, and it has won a number of enterprise contracts in the Nordic region, which Vilhelmsen explained would previously have been unattainable: "The Asigra software places rigorous demands on our storage, but the Huawei OceanStor series meets them with ease. It processes backups, restores, daily and weekly admin tasks and 32 autonomic healing processes at any one time. This is a tier-one solution and what we needed for new business and European expansion plans — particularly as the Asigra software is the only solution in the industry that complies with FIPS 140/2. Without this security standard government contracts would be unattainable.""The old solution was fine for customers that were interested in backing up a SQL or Exchange database, but once we moved beyond that we suffered from performance issues. The new Huawei solution allows us to on-board customers much faster than before and is much more stable than the old platform."

A Brand-New Office System for JournalistsCCTV Desktop Cloud Project

BackgroundChina Central Television, commonly abbreviated as CCTV, is the predominant state television broadcaster in mainland China. CCTV plays a critical role in news broadcasting, social education, culture and entertainment, and information services. CCTV is also an effective channel for mutual communication between China and the rest of the world. New technologies such as cloud computing, virtualization, constantly emerge, which drives information-led transformations to come true. Amid that, new information-based work modes are becoming an important competitive stake for enterprises and public institutions. As the benchmark media organization in China, CCTV must keep abreast of industry trends and use more information technologies to quicken its news collection, compiling, and broadcast in the ever-growing information era.

Key ChallengesWhen streamlining its news collection, compiling,

and broadcast processes, CCTV faced many challenges, including:• Real-time work mode for enhanced work efficiencyJournalists were required to collect and compile news initially on the scene, however, the existing CCTV service platform could not fully meet the real-time news requirements. It was an important goal for CCTV to enhance the work efficiency of frontline journalists so that they can collect news as it happens.• Mobile off ice appl icat ions and unif ied operation and maintenance Since frontline journalists did not have fixed workplaces, their computers were difficult to manage and maintain when they were on the move. A brand new office solution was required to centrally manage and maintain their computers while not compromising their mobile work style experience.

used Huawei's pool-mode desktop cloud solution. In pool mode, only 500 virtual desktops were deployed to support CCTV's approximately 3,000 journalists. With its convenient, flexible, and mobile features, the pool-mode desktop cloud solution enabled frontline journalists to better experience mobile office services and made it possible to centrally manage and maintain the office system. The pool-mode desktop cloud solution has the following compelling features:• End-to-end securityHuawei offers an end-to-end security solution that covers terminal access authentication, user rights authentication, user behavior audit, data encryption during transmission, content encryption, and rights management. This solution stores data centrally to the backend data center, but not the front-end office terminals (the terminals have no hard disks), to ensure the data security.• Carrier-class reliabilityHuawei also delivers a carrier-class reliability solution. This solution adopts a "1+1 redundancy" network structure and supports management nodes in 1+1 hot standby mode. This solution ensures the high reliability of the entire journalist office system.• Customized development capabilityHuawei provides customizable Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) interfaces, helping CCTV to incorporate the new journalist office system into the entire IT system for centralized maintenance. Huawei makes customization an easy task with its proprietary Unified Virtualization Platform (UVP), a platform that can deliver integrated software and hardware solutions.End-to-end deliveryHuawei presents CCTV with end-to-end integrated software and hardware solutions that enable the new journalist system to be compatible with existing software and hardware, providing optimal user experience.• Solid track record in large-scale deploymentsHuawei has deployed the world's largest desktop cloud system for internal use and consequently accumulated broad experience. Currently, about 70,000

R&D engineers at Huawei are experiencing the benefits brought about by the desktop cloud system. Huawei's solid track record and expertise in desktop cloud systems combine to deliver a high-quality desktop cloud system and provide a highly reliable and efficient Opera t ion and Main tenance (O&M) platform.

Customer Benefits• Increased brand valuesBy combining the advantages of cloud computing technology with CCTV services, this system enhances CCTV's brand image and paramount role in the media sector.• Real-time newsThe desktop cloud could support approximate ly 3 ,000 mobi le journalist centers. Journalists can access the desktop cloud from any desktop office terminals on location then edit, upload, and broadcast news scripts, thereby making CCTV stay ahead of other media organizations.• EnhancedO&MefficiencyThe unified O&M platform can: o Easily deliver and uniformly manage Windows desktops. o Centrally update and release applications. o Centrally manage the application update, changes, and maintenance in the background. o Release, configure, and update appl icat ions and services on the system rather than on user terminals. o Allow users to obtain the latest applications and services without any additional configurations. o Enhance O&M efficiency by more than 10 times.

On-line ShoppingWithout Networks:Taobao Cloud ContactCenter Project

BackgroundTaobao is a Chinese website for on-line shopping, similar to eBay and Amazon. Taobao facilitates Business-to-Customer (B2C) and Consumer-to- Consumer (C2C) retail by providing a platform for businesses and individual entrepreneurs to open online retail stores. By the end of 2011, Taobao had 3.7 million registered users and 8 million different commodities available online. About 60 million users visit the Taobao website each day, and 48,000 commodities are sold each minute. The rapid development of e-commerce and stiff competition between B2C websites, such as Amazon and 360buy, forced Taobao to design a new operational platform. Taobao plans to build a ubiquitous shopping access platform, integrating on-line, TV, mobile phone, and toll-free shopping, which will continue to enhance service capability by building a better communication bridge between sellers and buyers and retaining buyers with repeat-purchase loyalty.

Key ChallengesThe construction of Taobao Cloud Contact Center marks several fi rsts in the online shopping industry: for example, the first multi-party cooperative operation platform, initial integration with Taobao Mall (Tmall) services, and the industry's largest contact center. The following major challenges had to be considered during the planning phase for the Taobao project:○ Seamless integration with Tmall system: Taobao Cloud Contact Center had to be seamlessly integrated with the existing Tmall system to allow Tmall sellers to use a unifi ed voice access code to communicate with buyers.○ Large-capacity and high-reliability: Tmall had about 40,000 sellers and planned to increase them to 80,000 agents, which required a large-scale contact center platform featuring high reliability and centralized management.○ Multi-party co-operative operation: An open Taobao
