Case Study

ASouthAfricanSuccess

ScenarioWhenVumatelenteredtheFTTHmarketinAugust2014,theirmissionwastofindacost-effectivewaytoconnectcustomerstotheiropenaccessnetworkinthemostefficientandprofessionalmanner.Workingwithfiberglassrequiresadifferentsetofskillsthantraditionalcoppercables.

“WeknewthebigchallengeforVumatelwasnotsomuchtrenchingandlayingthedistributioncables”,saysIanKock,RegionalDirectoratVumatel.“Therealchallengelayinconnectingthecustomerswitha100%reliablesolutionthatworkedfromdayoneandgavethecustomerthehigh-qualityfiberspeedswehad provisionedfor.”

ThechallengeofintroducingfiberoptictechnologytoSouthAfricaisthatincontrasttocoppercables,fiberglassmustbespliced,whichrequireshighlytrainedengineerswithdedicatedfiberopticskillsandexpensiveequipment.

“Sadly,thoseengineersareinshortsupply,”Iansaid.“Wethereforewantedaruggedizedsolutionthatwaspre-terminatedandcouldbeeasilyinstalled.”

TailoredVumatel Pre-terminatedSolutionVumatelturnedtoPPCBroadbandand,inpartnershipwithMustekSA,theteamsdiscussedwaystotransformtheindustry-leadingMiniflex®fiberopticcabletobettersuitVumatel’smethodofinstallation.

“Vumatelapproachedusandaskedifwecouldpre-terminatetheMiniflexcableinsuchawaythattheircontractorscouldhavearangeofcablelengthstosuitavarietyofchallengeswhenconnecting

thelast-drop,”saysSimonRoberts,PPCSalesDirectorforAfrica.“WeneededtomakeouroutdoorMiniflexcableUVstableandwhite;improvethematerialtofurtherruggedizeagainsttheelements;andremovethefieldtermination,whichhadhistoricallybeentheissuewithsomanylast-mileconnectionsnotjustinSouthAfrica,butonthecontinentatlarge.”

TheserequirementsleadtotheVumatelMiniflexcable–3mmindiameter,5xbendradius,whiteincolor(fullyUVstableforaseamlessoutdoor/indoortransition)andacrushresistanceexceeding3,500Nor350kgpersquarefoot.

“Mustekinvestedheavilyinalocalizedpre-terminationfacilitythatcandeliverover5,000ready-madeFTTHleadsperweek,”SeanLax,PPCProductManageratMusteksaid.“Wehadseenlow-qualityproductsleakingintotheSouthAfricanmarketandknewthatovertime,thesewouldleadtonetworkissues.

“Mustekwantedtoleadthewaywithhigh-qualitysolutions,localizedproductionandsupportandadedicatedteamfocusedpurelyonlast-mile,pre-terminatedsolutions.WenotonlyspenttimetounderstandwhatVumatelwantedatthetime,butwheretheirnetworkwouldevolvetointhreetofiveyears’time.It’sbeenapleasuretobepartoftheVumateljourneyandhelpconnectmorethan350,000customerswithourhandmade,tailoredFTTHsolution.”

End-to-EndLast-dropSolution“Civilcostswilloftenaccountformorethan75%ofanetworkbuild,soit’sessentialthatoperatorshaveatoolboxsolutionthatcanaccommodatethediversityofthehomeinstallation”saysEwaldvanderWesthuizen,Implementation&OperationsExecutiveatVumatel.

“Flexibilityiskeyofcourse,butknowingwehavetherightcoreproductsthatwillnotletmycontractorsdownisthestand-upreasonVumatelstandardizedontheMiniflex®pre-terminatedsolution.Thiscompanytailoredtheircable,investedinlocalizedsupportandproductionandofferthehighestlevelsofsupportthatIhavefoundintheSouthAfricanmarket.”

TheMiniflexfiberopticcablehasbeendesignedforthedemandingAfricanenvironmentandallowstheinstallertohand-pushupto100m(328ft)throughexistingmicroductswhenpresent.Miniflexcanalsobehand-pushedthrough20mmPVCmicroductswhenVumatelrunsfromthebreak-outboxintothepreferredroomafterconsultationwiththehomeowner.

“BeforePPCandMustekdeliveredusahigh-quality,ruggedized,pre-terminatedsolution,westruggledwithpoorlysplicedinstallations,”saysvanderWesthuizen.“SincewestandardizedonMiniflexalmostthreeyearsago,ourinstallationqualityhasimprovedsignificantly.

DarrylNieuwenhuizen,HeadofInstallationsDepartmentatVumatelinEkurhuleni,says“PPCandMustekareconstantlyonhandwithproducttipsandhints,newandimprovedinstallationmethodsandtop-classsupportformycontractors.It’sonethingtohave

productsshippedinfromoutofAfrica,butit’sanothertohaveworld-classsupportfromlocalizedsupplierswhounderstandtheconstraintswefaceatVumatel.It’ssafetosaythatwithoutthesetailoredsolutions,theVumatelnetworkmaynothaveenjoyedthehighconnectionrateswecurrentlydo.”

DrivingReturnonInvestmentThroughoutAfrica,therehasbeenabiginfluxoflow-qualitysolutionsthathaveenteredthemarket,temptingoperatorswithlowprices.“VumatelmadethedecisiontoinvestinqualityandtooktherightpathinpartneringwithPPCtodevelopatailoredAfricansolutionthattheycantrustwillalwaysdothejob,”Robertssaid.

Inaddition,Vumatelreceives24hourlocalizedsupportfromMustekandacontractortrainingprogramthattakeslessthan30minutes.ThePPCsplicelesssolutionwillplugandplayfromend-to-fend,empoweringthecontractortocompletemoreinstallations.Thishelpsthemraisethebar,intermsofqualityandperformance,andultimatelydrivesafarsuperiorreturnoninvestment(whencomparingthetotalcostofownership)thanlow-cost,low-qualitysolutions.
