Aspin’s innovative R2R 4x4 SIV debuts for Network Rail

Case Study

Aspin’s innovative and award-winning new Network Rail approved Road to Rail specially adapted Land Rover (R2R 4x4 SIV) has made its debut on the Huntingdon to Woodwalton Four Track Project. It provides a fast, safe and economical means of facilitating ground investigations.

Developed in partnership with Aquarius Railroad Technologies, the R2R 4x4 SIV can be used on road and rail, safely transporting up to four operatives and equipment on track and two on the road. It replaces the need for using hand trolleys and significantly reduces the time and labour needed to collect essential ground investigation data, offering safe travel under live overhead line equipment.

For Morgan Sindall’s work on the East Coast main line, Aspin’s ground investigations team made 17 holes to 4 metres, covering an impressive 12 miles of track in a 28-hour possession, completing the work in about half the time compared with alternative methods.

The Result

The Aspin/Aquarius Rail R2R 4x4 SIV provides transport for people on both road and rail. It is specially designed to transport ground investigation teams and equipment with a rig on the vehicle that holds the drill securely and eliminates the risk of toppling or parting trolleys.

Access to the rail network is also made easier as the vehicle can access most step-free points or use approved foam track access platforms as well as traversing nearby off-road agricultural terrain.

Other safety measures include a manual jack so sample tubes and casings can be rescued in the event of a breakdown and a retractable barrier that protects operatives during ALO (adjacent line open) work.

The Solution

Aspin’s R2R 4x4 SIV overcomes Network Rail’s ban on link trolleys carrying more than one ton. That means track window sample rigs, such as Dart & Dando rigs don’t have to be transported to site using three trolleys.

With Aspin and Aquarius Rail’s new solution, track access time can be reduced by 80%, achieving more than double the output of conventional methods. Safety is improved as the risk of fatigue, slips, trips and falls is reduced along with manual handling thanks to the innovative design.

Teams are able to carry out essential track investigation works safely and more rapidly, minimising the need for possessions and disruption to rail services.

The vehicle now forms part of Aspin’s total range of service and comprehensive equipment solutions for the rail and infrastructure sectors. It has Network Rail product approval.
