CASE STUDYAn Energy Efficient Barn
comprises a series bespoke wall panels, which are
installed as an ‘internal skin’ inside building, drastically improving
insulation and reducing the energy required for heating.
The panels are made-to-measure and pre-fabricated offsite in the Matilda’s Planet factory; reducing the installation time on site dramatically.
The units are very thin, akin to internal double glazing for walls, and provide high levels of insulation, excellent acoustic performance and high fire protection.
A sealed air gap between the inherited structure and the new wall isolates the interior wall from all external, cold walls. The system ensures that condensation is prevented by removing the most common cause - a cold external wall.
BACKGROUND
In July of 2015, Matilda’s Planet were approached by a returning customer who was already enjoying the benefits of Matilda’s
in his rural farmhouse home.
The enquiry related to a barn conversion project taking place within the grounds of the Farm and the brief was to turn a 19th Century barn into a warm, energy efficient property ready for occupancy in Autumn 2015. A big challenge on a very tight turnaround.
A number of energy efficiency measures, including a ground sourced heat pump, were adopted by the architect with
handed the task of containing the heat generated in the expansive and exposed property.
The works programme relied on complete flexibility with the installation taking place on a room by room basis as other measures such as under floor heating were installed at the same time
