The Chandigarh College of Architecture (or CCA) is a college imparting education and research in the field of architecture. It covers the north-western region of India including the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir as well as the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The college has an enrolment of 200 undergraduates.

The college is situated on vidhya path sector-12D Chandigarh , INDIA. The campus is housed at the Punjab Engineering College Campus, Sector 12 in Chandigarh . CCA is widely spread in 5-acre (20,000 m2) campus with its own cricket ground, basketball court, volleyball court and a gym. The boys hostel is located 250 yards (230 m) at the back and the girls hostel is located in adjacent sector-11.

The distance between Chandigarh junction and CCA is 11.4 km and takes 23

min via madhya marg.

The distance between Airport and CCA is 15.2 km and takes 29 min via udyog path.

Remarks:-

• The college workshop caters to the need of ‘hands on’ experience in handling of building construction tools and model making.

• It has facilities including machines and trained personnel in the fields of carpentry, metal work and model making.

In 1998, IIT Roorkee gifted a working model of sun movement according to the building at diff. date and time.

• 15 student can work at one time. • Turning letch and multipurpose machines are available here. • A store room was there in work shop containing all the raw

material like wooden block and ply etc.

NOTES

• The dimension of the room is 25’x18’.

• Separate sitting area in the lobby and a reception is provided.

• The list of toppers of all batches has been displayed on the wall of fame.

• Attached wash room has been given in the director room.

Clay modeling and steel wire structures made by student are displayed in the graphics lab and few sculpture were displayed outside in the lab

• Sitting arrangement is done in the form of stairs wide tread of 3’ and riser is 8”.

• The lecture is designed for 30 student.

• There is best use of northern natural light.

• In facilities one white board,3 fans, 3 tube lights are provided.

Personal cabins for all the faculty members are provided but also all the faculty rooms are not placed together they are located at different places in the college building .

The college has a well equipped seminar hall with a huge table and sufficient sitting.

• The studios are quite spacious and they are separated by low height walls.

• The doubly loaded corridors are dull spaces. The studios and the workshop are intercepted columns in the middle.

• Now days, further partitions have been put in studios to divide them into subspaces.

• The walls are whitewashed while the ceiling have left of bare concrete.

• The classrooms, studios are other spaces deeper on north lights for their lighting. The lighting is good during day time.

• Ventilation is from small window, which are present on the outside walls. The north side windows are large and near the ceilings.

• The studio has a separate display area.

• Voids has been left in the for lighting and air movement.

• Armed chair and stools are used for design lecture and drafting purposes respectively .

• Dustbin is provided near the door.

• The dimension of the studio is 60’x35’ with 30 drafting tables and proper sitting.

• Every studio has CCTV, LAN, display board and fire alarm. • Drawing boards are of A0 size. • Openings for ventilation and lockers for file storage are

provided in the studio

• A complex network of corridors shows well planned internal connectivity.

• The corridor of entrance has a glass façade which lightens the corridor during day time which is very well used for display purposes

• A fully centrally air conditioned computer lab with the capacity of 40 student is provided in the college.

• The computer lab is well spacious

Remarks:-

Courtyard is the only open space in the college which is well linked to the rest of the college. It is a grassy lawn, used by students to relax during their spare time. There is a large garden at the south side of the college.

There is good usage of open spaces whether it is internal or external open space. An internal courtyard has been design with a stage which is well connected to the corridor of main entrance and internal corridor. There is open space in the front of the canteen where the sitting arrangement is done very well. Sculpture are placed such a way that they create point of attraction. Football ground, cricket pitch and basketball are provided in the college

A well equipped guard room is present beside the main entrance. The guard room has spacious use as it has a table ,chair, a window but the ceiling is low and has a height of 7’.

• Electricity transfer from transformer to poles and then to the MCB .

• Safety measures regarding electricity are taken into consideration.

• Water is store in a water tank from submersible pump and govt. water supply.

• To water cooler are provided at the two corners of the corridor.

• Waste water is transferred from the open canopy pipes to the drains then to the sewer and then to the main hole.

• Water drainage of the college is towards south direction.

• The drains carry waste water from all the parts of college to the sewers.

middle of the college. • Best usage of north light. • Solar panel are provided. • Opening and exhaust fans are

provided for ventilation. • Bend pipes are used for fresh

oxygen from ceiling. • Sitting space with in the corridor

acts as positive area. • White color in whole building

which reflect light and the space appears wide.

• At the main entrance display area is provided.

• Whole campus is surrounded by lush green path way.

• Architect has failed to link the courtyard in an active manner with rest of the building. As a result, it is a passive & a dead space..

• There is little room for inter-faculty interaction corridors which are major circulation arteries of the building help circulation in a very uninteresting and boring manner.

• The Courtyard has not been well linked with rest of the building

• BRICK HAS BEEN USED AS PRIMARY BUILDING MATERIAL FOR THE ENTIRE COMPLEX WALLS, COLUMNS.

• BRICK ARCHES HAVE BEEN USED FOR WIDE SPANS.

• USE OF CONCERETE HAS BEEN RESTRICTED TO FOUNDATIONS, FLOOR SLABS, AND TIES FOR ARCHED OPENINGS.

• Being a concrete building it absorbs heat thus it become very cold inventor. • Surrounding green belt is not well maintain. • No medical room in the college. • Girls hostel situated in another sector.
