PROJECT SUMMARYThe Ritz-Carlton selected the town of Paradise Valley to make its entrance into Arizona. Set on 20 acres overlooking Camelback Mountain, the development offers a luxury experience inspired by its surroundings. During construction a flood control channel needed to be relocated from the west side of the campus to the perimeter of the development. The design team was charged with engineering a robust drainage channel that would provide erosion protection and complement the natural habitat. Because aesthetics were critical to the project’s design, hard armoring techniques like rip-rap and concrete were not acceptable. PYRAMAT® 75 combined with sod, concrete curbing/walls and gabion drop structures were selected to armor the drainage channel. PYRAMAT 75 is a high performance turf reinforcement mat (HPTRM) that reinforces vegetation, easily connects to hardscape areas, and gabion drop structures. Because PYRAMAT requires less area for drainage roughness coefficients than rip-rap, the overall footprint of the drainage channel was reduced, allowing for more development. A walking path and landscaping were also incorporated around the drainage channel to provide residents a space to enjoy views of the surrounding mountains.
