Understanding ballast water Approach

Carnival Corporation & plc is a global cruise company and one of the largest vacation companies in the world. The organization operates

a fleet of more than 100 ships including leading cruise brands Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn,

and Fathom in North America; P&O Cruises and Cunard in the United Kingdom (Carnival UK); AIDA Cruises in Germany; Costa Cruises in

Southern Europe; and P&O Cruises in Australia. Alfa Laval is a global market provider of ballast water treatment systems, the organization

works with customers in nearly 100 countries, has 42 major production units and over 18,000 employees.

Both parties wanted to be sure that the retro-fitted system was able to meet the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) D-2 ballast

water performance standard under normal operating conditions. Carnival’s own testing of the ballast water from the PureBallast system to

verify performance yielded confusing results and for the parties to be sure of the performance of the ballast water treatment system they

required independent verification from the Ballast Water Centre.

What our client says “Cunard Line engaged PML Applications to conduct acceptance testing of an off-the-shelf Ballast Water Treatment System onboard MV

Queen Elizabeth in 2013. The testing covered the full suite of the IMO D2 standard, and was conducted onboard by PML Applications staff. The

professional way in which the sampling was conducted, and the detailed reports provided has given us reassurance that the system works as

intended, and confidence that it will continue to meet the demanding requirements of cruise itineraries. PML Applications continues to provide

Cunard Line with performance monitoring of our BWTS in service.”

Richard Catt - Environmental Manager, Carnival UK

The Centre was contracted by the leading cruise line

company, Carnival UK, and a leading global supplier of

products and solutions for heat transfer, separation and

fluid handling, Alfa Laval, to conduct an independent

shipboard test of the Alfa Laval Pureballast 2.0 retro-fitted

to one of Carnival’s Cunard vessels.

The project focused on a review of Carnival’s test results and

methods, undertaking ballast water sampling and analysis in

accordance with the IMO BLG guidelines and a summary of

compliance relative to the IMO’s D-2 ballast water performance

standard.

Our experts attended the ship in Southampton during one of her short routine

port visits. Ballast water was sampled over a full discharge of two ballast

tanks and analysed for the three IMO D-2 ballast water performance standard

categories. The results showed that all were well within the IMO D-2.
