With new cinema technology being constantly developed, ODEON made the decision to embark upon a digital cinema conversion across its entire UK and Ireland estate. To achieve this objective it appointed Brand-Rex Partner J. Brand to design, specify and install the new infrastructure.

Discussing the company’s suitability for the project, Paul Jordan, J. Brand’s sales and marketing manager, explains, ‘Many of the projects that we work on involve multiple sites across the country. With this experience ODEON were condent J.Brand could manage with the number of sites being upgraded and could ensure that the logistical side of the operation ran smoothly and on time.’

Importantly, ODEON realised that a best in class network cabling infrastructure was critical to the success of the project and would be the only way to get the highest level of performance out of the state-of-the-art digital projection equipment being introduced. Taking this into account and after assessing all the available options, it was decided that the Brand-Rex 10GPlus Augmented Category 6 system would be the perfect solution.

Jordan continues, ‘Our challenge was to provide a cabling infrastructure capable of supporting network speeds of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, allowing ODEON to quickly and reliably transfer lm between screens within its cinema network. We’ve worked with Brand-Rex for many years and, as a Select Partner, we have completed many installations of the 10GPlus system. We are well aware of its capabilities and had no hesitation in recommending it.’

After discussing the relative merits of shielded and unshielded cable with ODEON, it was decided to use the former, which provides an added layer of protection against electromagnetic interference. Not only does it stop interference into other cables and devices, it also reduces interference within the data transmission of the cable itself.

Commenting on the enhanced performance oered by10GPlus, Jordan says, ‘This installation was a major undertaking for ODEON and as you can imagine it’s not something that the company will be looking to do again for many years. Therefore, not only did they require a high performance solution but it had to be as future proof as possible.’

The project was run to a rigid schedule and being able to carry out the installations quickly and accurately was incredibly important. In order to make the best use of time on-site, engineers used innovations such as the Brand-Rex tool-free RJ-45 Snap-In-Jack for fast and ecient termination. As a result, all the ODEON conversions opened on schedule.

By the end of the project over 90km of cable and 3,200 links were installed in 112 cinemas. The project was a great success and ODEON now boasts 884 digital screens, which is more than any other cinema group and means that cinemagoers can enjoy the ultimate visual experience.
