Case group work daily recording Case number: 3

    Date: 30.6.2010

Case group work program of the day:

    Site visit and lunch break

The site visit was very informative. Many of the preconceptions of Suurpelto were rectified and

some of the previous days ideas were then re-evaluated according to the new insights into the form

    of Suurpelto.

Some thoughts that were first presented at the case visit site:

yElderly people could help each other out, building up and exchanging social and knowledgecapital.

y Elderly people act as a security system/network, where they would act as passive guardsinthe area.

y Elderly people when relatively younger, would then help out their older friends. And as theytoo get older, the cycle continues.

y Exchange of knowledge and skills mentioned again, a point system suggested for exchange not only in monetary terms.

y Perhaps one should go for renaissance as opposed to constant modernisation.y Examples of community banks, which communities have created themselves when larger

banks have concentrated more on areas of different demographics (or to richer areas). In

this community-based banks delinquencies are low, ie. success.

y In Britain there is a startup company close to a university which works in the principle of abike crche. This bike crche would be aimed for those who cycle to nearby

workplaces/university and who not only leave their bikes at the crche but also have a

shower and the clothes are washed while at work. Also repair services can be included.

Something like this was suggested that might be implemented.

y There was some more discussion concerning Bike Tubes. They were generally thought aninteresting idea but largely unlikely to succeed due to practicalities. Rather, it was suggested

to create cyclist routes that would have e.g. heating plates installed, or some other methods

to facilitate winter cycling. Rough gravel is one of the major gripes of cyclists in Finland.

Books concerning Tapiola puutarhakaupunki and its architecture were circulated: Tapiola was a

field just like Suurpelto; there is still hope.

    Kone presentation:

Plenty of discussion takes place, but surrounds Kone and their innovations as well as practical and

technical issues. Many novel ways of travel and other KONE innovations were presented. APMs were

considered in the traditional form, or as a taxi-type PRT Personal rapid transport, both of which are

generally rather infeasible for Suurpelto. However, Kone has contributed to some extent to the

Suurpelto project (before ACSI). From KONEs perspective T3 comes first (Otaniemi, Tapiola,

Keilaniemi), and some research may be applied to Suurpelto later.

Furhter discussion may ensue from from KONE innovation for authentication and destination

control, systems that automatic door-opening, lift calling. Could perhaps be joined with a payment

    system and with transportation.

The place you work is not traditional, not the office, but some people are very effective when

working on the road while going somewhere. Jokingly; it would be great to have a monorail going

around Suurpelto without actually going anywhere. Some food for thought as to the modern way of

    (tele/near) working.

    Session two, back at dipoli

Question of the day. What did you learn today, What new ideas did you get that could be integrated.

Practical ideas. Write them on the post-it and then Why would I want to live there. What is the

brand. What makes the area what it is. Etc.

On the flap board: (these are the product of the following discussion recorded later too)

    What did you learn

    - nothing -

    New ideas for suurpelto concept

y Subsidies support to find social entrepreneurs to the regiony How to create the spirit to the region (or the heart. This could be the social network,

    physical building etc.)

y Community-based livingy Banc account proposal to community processes Assets Time(in a community-based living

money is not your only asset but also skills, knowledge thus a new type a bank for them)

y Contract the professor / expert of urban planning in order to speed up the innovation inpractice

y New ideas and insights 1. Strong promotion for rentals. To make it a better place to live. 2.Ask students to do the campaing.

y Speed up the construction progress city should subsidies give incentives to citizens tomove to the region.

    Unique selling points

y Value of investments (long term value, especially for those moving in first as the area is notcompleted yet)

y [Q3] Emerged comments, this project needs to have stage-goals, such as 1-3 years, 5-10years and 11-15 goals.

How do you find the communities, how to define them ..?

    Problems identified:

One product of the case visit was the realisation that the green image can be harder to apply in

practice as very little of the pre-existing vegetation was remaining; green area -selling point cannot

be used for the first five years or so. Also, a bike highway is very unlikely to be implemented at the

    same time.

Healthiness, balance, harmony: something referred as smart living during the previous day. Sauna

is important to Finns, but so is water and parks. Co-created services. Citizens serve citizens. Families

need space around them, space and nature, it is pretty built up now.

It was asked once again, what would make Suupelto ideal from the case workers own perspective.

However, this time knowledge working was emphasised: If were all knowledge workers, what

would be of interest. It was identified that knowledge workers tend to be very busy, and as such

    entrepreneurism should be encouraged.

Also, the main reason residents would be moving to Suurpelto was regarded to be that they need a

house to live in due to high demand. The project should have stage goals as it is not possible to do it

all in one go. For Finnish people flats are a form of investment and getting the investment back in

    10-20 years is considered important.

Helsinki City centre connection remains important, especially for students. The way Finnish

companies are involved in these projects is considered very strong. They are involved and have been

talking about Suurpelto as a large test area. Thus involving companies should not prove to be a

problem. But one must also keep in mind that one seldom wants to live in a laboratory.

The first family will move in soon. If people move in gradually, would rental apartments be better

first? First year students may be more inclined to move to Otaniemi due to distance, but later stage

students may be more inclined to be moving to some place like Suurpelto.

Students could be and should be used for marketing towards other students and University. There is

a social [networking] aspect, but also that they are the ones that are most able to create the correct

slogans. One also could contract a professor/expert to do a follow-up study on how the

development works out. Going through the process, so we know how it can be improved.

Typical to Espoo, there are 2-3 cars per household and they could be reduced by one if there were

electric cars in common use for the people in the urban area/house companies. (neighbourhood co-

sharing). In Kone, they use visitors as guinea pigs for their lifts in Kone building. Could this idea be

    somehow applied to Suurpelto?

Banking concept for knowledge workers, where you can do a service for free, but a record of it

exists. This would activate people to help each other. Especially older/elderly are targeted. Bank

account is not only money capital driven, but asset driven where assets could be considered to be

    skills.

Onecan use thecase project results and perhapssee how they apply to Suurpelto.

Thiscan be used as a circular, repetitiveconcept. In thecentre we have theconcept, project

    workers, residents'

people and challenges. These peoplecharacteristics would be open-

    inded and

visionary. Thus a positivespiral is formed where first onecares (vlit), then one influences (vaikuta)

and feels at home (viihty), and eventually one feels well/good (voi hyvin). This would then

encourage people to care for the community. Aaltos/universitys role would be one of facilitation

and stimulation as an external operator.

However, people come anyway to the place and they are not selected according to a certain profile.

Nevertheless, the issue is how to make Suurpelto into something where residents are Wanting to

live instead of Having to live there.

Thus families as one type of client is now edged towards open-minded people as a major client. Food

for thought: in a living area with a sign only rich people and everyone wants to live there. Same

could apply to open-mindedness, if considered a desired trait.

Take the people from the surrounding, involve the people. With interests and skills. Students should

    be activated.

    Powell reorientates

Needs a heart, whether it is in the structure, buildings, something social. But it needs to exists.

Something to carry you away. One of the key points from a foreigners point-of-view in Finland: one

can talk about designing with anyone, everyone can participate, and all know English.

In Britain, a pub was sold for 1 pound to students who are planning to recreate a pub without

serving any alcohol, but plenty of other drinks and food. How to recreate the feel of an old style pub,

the strong social ties to a single place/venue (pub).
