Developed by Australian studio Hipster Whale, the company started looking for global publishers for both their Android and iOS version. Yodo1 was chosen for the Chinese market.

Upon release, Crossy Road became the #1 game in many Chinese marketplaces for its first 3 months.

Today, Crossy Road has received as high as 6 million DAUs in China, with a daily average of 1 million DAUs.

Crossy Road is an simple and easy to play pixel-style Frogger/Flappy Bird style game available on Android and iOS devices.

The difference between Crossy Road and Flappy Bird are the game elements like giftboxes that players can purchase with in-game coins, leaderboards, and improve gameplay.

The passing rate for Crossy Road was 88.3% among the hundreds of devices tested, which is superior to the average index compared to the whole industry and nearly close to optimal ranges. A high compatibility rate improves players’ game experience and is helpful for game retention rate.

The failing phones usually failed during the installation and tutorial section and in rare cases, start-ups. The main problem occurring during the tutorial section, (6.5% device failure rate) was a bug creating crashes and blank screens.

Incompatibility was mainly from low-end devices. With the game having good compatibility with high-end devices.

Because the profit model of Crossy Road’s Chinese version is from in-game ads, it was important to fix these issues.

TestBird concluded that of the 300 million users that would be able to install the game from tested devices, 20 million would encounter issues.

The CPU while playing the game tested well and most mobile devices were using less than 30%.

This showed that the game development team optimized the performance of the CPU very well.

Memory use for Crossy Road on most mobile devices held within 120MB.

Meanwhile, the develop team also optimized some devices with memory under 1GB to ensure most players could have smooth game experience.

HTC Desire 816:During gameplay, the CPU on this device rose as high as 39% and the RAM at 97MB. Meanwhile, the temperature never rises over 28℃. Under these conditions, players receive a smooth game experience without feeling the heat from the device when holding it for a long time.
