Breathing Brass - Part 1Photography

This picture is demonstrating, the moment of me with my flatmate listen-ing and sharing our common music during every Saturday night. This is where the whole project began.

John Coltrane - Like Someone In Love

This song has giving me the feeling of “Meditative”, but the question is why? It was at this point that I decided to explore the jazz music world and find out the answer of it.

Breathing Brass - Part 1

During the journey, I’d went to being a volunteer as a photographer in one of the jazz music clubs in north London called Vortex Jazz Club. Luckily, I met a musician named “Evan Parker”, he inspired the most at the beginning of this journey. He talked through his definition of jazz music with me. He said:

“Jazz music it’s just a word, it does not mean anything to me, but the music itself means a lot to me. It’s like I could feel every single sound around me, it was almost as if I could breathe the music, in and out.”

Breathing Brass - Part 1

After our conversation, I realized the most important part of the music is the philosophy and the way a musician treats every single sound and note that they play, over all the years. Then he mention every musician had they’re own unique customize instrument for them self. So then I decided photograph they’re instrument to show they’re characters and they’re philosophy as well.

Breathing Brass - Part 1

I come up an idea photograph they’re instrument details to show they ‘re unique characters and they’re philosophy behind them. So I went to one of the music instrument shop to do photo shoot particle. Before I met them individually.

Then I decided finding different musician. Meeting them individual-ly, where they usually doing they’re practicing and interviewing them privately.

Breathing Brass - Part 1

“The unusual sound surrounding us in our daily lives helps me to improvise and gives me a surprise. This is what I am trying to do with my music, over all these years.”

“The secret of improvising jazz music, it’s to not having any frequency of an idea about how the music goes. Therefore, I have to be thunderbolt with an open mind and go with the moment.”

“When I go onto the stage, it just has to be thunderbolt, and not to think about any expectations.”

“I often play jazz music using a structure which is based on an existing song. I believe there are always elements of freedom, and when I improvise, I find freedom even though I’m playing within a structure.”

MARK LOCKHEART

Breathing Brass - Part 1

“The idea of nature has invigorated my music, its peacefulness helps me write and create music, in a meditative way; just as an eclipse brings the sun and moon together. ”

“I like the element of risk, because with improvisation anything can happen. It could go terribly wrong, or it could tell the most exciting story. ”

“Jazz music has given me freedom to shift and mould, like an orchestra.”

YAZZ AHMED

“To me, Jazz music brings everything together, in terms of people, but also of emotion and mind. ”

Breathing Brass - Part 1

“Writing music it always been my dream job, I can not write without the big city.”

“I like surprises went other musician play my music differently, that’s how the magical moment happen.”

“I believe listening and digesting music can improving me to be come a better musician, because I’m addictive with music and I love went music challenge me. ”

GUY BARKER

“I love recreate each moment of the story for different musician.”

Breathing Brass - Part 1

Breathing Brass - Part 2 Photography Book

In this project, I decided to produce a photography book by using a systems as a hierarchy. To present the idea about, the whole series of the photography and the philosophy behind each musician individually.

Breathing Brass - Part 2

Book: http://www.casey-lee-24.com/new-page/

Every beginning of a section about the musician. Will be shows the quote of the philosophy about them been playing with they’re music, for all these years.

The next page will be continue with one page of quote then move on with the photograph.

The photograph will be laying out on different pages, starts from the top until the bottom of the instrument.

Breathing Brass - Part 2

At the end of the systems, the last 4 page will shows the last photograph of the whole interment and the last quote. Then it will be the information of how many years of the instrument and philosophy that they had been played with.

Then it will be 2 more pages to show 2 portraits of the musician as a ending.

A $25.4 Billion Dollar LiePhotography

Moon landing conspiracy theories, had been doubt for all these years. 20% of Amer-ican people did not believe Apollo 11 mission had landed to the moon. And most of the people believe they’ve live shotted the process inside of the studio, in the U.S. Air Force facility “Area 51” in Nevada. People who those believe in conspiracy theories. Had found out a lot of evidence from the photograph to proved, this whole Moon landing mission was fake as a lie.

A $25.4 Billion Dollar Lie

I decided to photography the idea about the astronaut exploring the moon, but based on the earth. To being ironic to the idea of NASA using 24.5 Billion Dollar to fake the whole Apollo 11 mis-sion, and broadcast to every corner of the whole world as a “Lie”.

Through my research, Apollo 11 had only landed around one area call “Mare Fecundation”. From this point of view, they should have broad-cast the same background over and over again. Then I spend 245 GBP to rent out a astronaut suit to re-demonstrate the lie on the earth. Be-ing ironic to the idea about the whole lie.

Air FrictionInteractive Design

Demonstration

Air Pump up from the hole

Air friction it’s refers to forces acting opposites to the relative motion of any object. Moving with respect to surrounding fluid. This can be exist between two fluid layers (or surfaces) or a fluid and a solid surface.

This demonstration, shows how air friction controlling a piece of paper, between two fluid surfaces. During the process, a “Xbox kinect” will be fast tracking the movement of the piece of paper. To transfer the data into the computer system. Therefore, the system will be start interacting with the data to create a digital drawing.

This demonstration shows, by using a soft-ware “Processing”. Create a program code to control the kinect for the object tracking and using the movement to create a digital drawing.

Land Reclamation, usually known as reclamation, and also known as land fill, is the process of created new land from ocean, riverbeds, or lake beds. The land reclaimed is known as reclamation ground or land fill.

In 6-1-2015, the Hong Kong International Airport planing to add-ing a third runway. This project would require dredging and land reclamation, will directly affect approximately 650 ha of the seabed.

During the process, it will create a lot of different impact to the Chinese white dolphins. Such as permanent loss of habitat, temporary loss of hab-itat, water pollution, acoustic disturbance from percussive piling (under-water noise generated by percussive piling) and marine traffic disturbance.

Swallow

In this project, I decided to products a short film to show a demonstration. About the sea creature facing a number of threats. Due to mass land reclamation production and creating water pollution, along with coastal development.

First Aid, Saves LivesCharity Campaign Design

First Aid, Saves Lives

Every year, 140,000 people lose their life in UK due to a lack of first aid on hand. The Red Cross briefed us to organise a day of fundraising for the British Red Cross. Inspired by the work that the BRC do with training people in first aid skills, we created costumes and props focused on the concept of preparing and training.

First Aid, Saves Lives

In one day we managed to raise over £200, helping to raise awareness and allowing the Red Cross to continue saving lives.

Thank you

I believe creativity is about exploring and observing our interests. Discovering different possibilities and observing the little details of the subject matter, in order to find things you would never get in touch with or learn before, or to see a place you have never been before.

Taking risks and being brave to solve problems in different circumstances has always been a strategy in my work.

My photography project about Jazz musicians in London, called ‘Breathing Brass’ (2015) shows my approach. I was inspired by a song called ‘Like Someone in Love’ by John Coltrane. My idea was trying to photograph the audience in their meditative state. After my investigation with different musicians, from the gigs and musicians I interviewed individually, I started to realise, each individual jazz musician has a unique story and identity behind themselves. This became the inspiration for developing my whole project.

Keep questioning and being curious is my key solution and motivation to solving problems. At the same time, it helps me to develop and expand the possibilities of my ability as well.

Organising information is always a consideration for me, when designing. Imagine a piece of paper as a format to show information, and our job is to organise the information behind this piece of paper. We need to be able to communicate and visualise this in a creative way, so we can engage the audience. We all live in a era of digital technology, this piece of paper has expanded into the a digital form, such as a screen of a computer, a television or our mobile devices, my work is always aware of this, and considers these formats.

Information is everywhere. Without graphic design, we wouldn’t be able to understand information, without organisation in design, we would be just making things more complicated. I always aim not to just add more information, but make existing information more understandable to the audience.

The last three years of my practice has helped me to develop and explore as well as create. Being a photographer and a designer is a big advantage to build up my character, as being a photographer inspires me to consider how my audience experiences or inter-acts with my work. Photography has been a great conjugation with my graphic design work, which I like to push into what I many call ‘Information Experience Design’. I believe Information Experience Design will be indispensable for communication design in the future.

My project ‘Air Friction’ (2015), demonstrates this practice, and also how I am developing my abilities. I am learning coding in order to control an ‘Xbox 360 kinect’ to detect the movement of an object during air friction. Then using the data to transform into a dig-ital drawing as an outcome to communicate and materialise a complex subject.

I am always looking forward to explore and discover new subject matter, which I have never explored before, as this is how I chal-lenge myself.
