Cassirer and the Aesthetics: Expression,

Representation, Significance

For many years the leading neo-Kantianphilosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) wasthought to be a name of the past. However, inrecent years Cassirers philosophy has been thesubject of increasing attention fromresearchers and scholars. Particularly hisdoctrine of basic phenomena has been hailedas something completely new and original onCassirers part, bringing him into contact withmodern phenomenology and hermeneuticphilosophy.

One of the things that scholars have (re)discovered in Cassirer is his richunderstanding of what one could call theaesthetic dimension of myth, language, artand science. Under the caption Cassirer andthe aesthetic Expression, Representation,Significance the Seminar of Aesthetics at theUniversity of Oslo has invited four eminentexperts on Cassirer and the aesthetic to illuminate the relevance and significance of

Cassirers thinking for present day aesthetics.Birgit Recki is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg. She is the editor ofthe collected works of Ernst Cassirer (Gesamtausgabe) and is currently Prsidentin derDeutschen Gesellschaft fr sthetik.

Marion Lauschke holds a doctorate in philosophy. She wrote her thesis on Cassirer,published in 2007 as Die sthetische Vorgeschichte der Symbolphilosophie Ernst Cassirersund die symbolische Form der Kunst, and currently belongs to the Kolleg-ForschegruppeBildakt und Verkrperung at the Humboldt Universitt zu Berlin.

Carmen Metta wrote her doctoral thesis on Ernst Cassirer and Paul Klee under ProfessorGiulio Raio at the Universit degli Studi di Napoli LOrientale, where she is currentlyemployed at the Dipartimento di Filosofia e Politica. She is also the Associate Editor of the
