Taking in dance floor crazes and fashion trends, Dancehall is our story.

How we danced through wars hoping soldiers would come home, how we kept going through the strikes.It’s the moves we made through sixteen Prime Minister’s and massive social change. It’s throwing down shapes when our horse won at the St Leger and Dads awkwardly dancing at that street party for the Queen’s coronation. It’s children in Saturday morning classes stepping on stage for the first time, and revellers on Saturday night floors having one last drink.

Beginning his career over three decades ago Joe Longthorne is widely recognised as one of the UK’s top entertainers.

The programme also features two world premieres. Phoenix Artistic Director Sharon Watson creates TearFall, a new piece that builds on her exploration of science through dance using mesmerising and athletic choreography.

The auditorium will rock to the thrills of Carl Orff’s dramatic and emotionally charged tour de force Carmina Burana; accompanied by four principal percussionists from the National Festival Orchestra and pianist Jonathan Gooing.

Doncaster Minster Choristers join in the fun singing the roasted swan’s solo, directed by Darren Williams.

Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy Chichester Psalms and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue are also featured.Dr Simon Lindley conducts with vocalists Debra Morley and Phil Willcox leading the line-up.

2014 saw Mik and the lads appear on Channel 4’s Random Acts, play Belgium, Glastonbury, Port Eliot, Edinburgh Fringe... and a lovely gig at Cast (filled with local teachers).

They’ve had a flying start to this year playing to a rapturous crowd of 300 people at the Brudenell Social Club, and headline spots at a number of festivals. All that and a triumphant return to Cast causing yet more havoc!

Ensemble 360 offer another varied programme of music ‘in the round’. Framed by one of Mozart’s charming flute quartets and by one of Beethoven’s first published works, the remarkable Duo by Zoltán Kodály was written in 1914. The influence of Hungarian traditional music is apparent throughout, but it’s hard not to hear hints of the impending catastrophe of the First World War in the first movement. Roussel’s cool, neo-Classical Trio is by turns athletic and unhurried.

Meverhold’s Theatrical Biomechanics is a unique approach to movement training. His ideas were fundamental to modern theatre and have influenced major directors such as Peter Brook, Grotowski and Brecht.

Chloe Whitehead, Director of Proper Job Theatre Company, has been studying Biomechanics with Russian Master Gennadi Bogdanov since 1995 and is founder of Talia Theatre, an international touring company specialising in Biomechanics. Having used the technique in contemporary theatre both as an actor and a director, she is now a PhD student with the University of Huddersfield.
