MAMMA MIA!MAMMA MIA! is a jukebox musical, meaning it is an original play constructed around the existing songs of the 1970’s pop band, Abba.

PLOT SYNOPSIS ACT ONE

The story opens on the beach of a beautiful Greek island. Sophie, a

young, hopeful woman, is about to mail three invitations. She takes a moment to

think about what she’s doing (“I HAVE A DREAM”) then drops the letters into the

mailbox.

Suddenly, two of Sophie’s old friends, Ali and Lisa, appear. They are there

for a very special occasion: Sophie is getting married! But even Sky, Sophie’s

fiancé, doesn’t know the secret she now reveals to her friends: Years ago,

Sophie’s mother, Donna, knew three men, and one of them is Sophie’s father

(“HONEY, HONEY”). It is these three men, Sam Carmichael, Bill Austin and Harry

Bright, that Sophie has invited to her special day. It’s her dream to have her real

father give her away at her wedding.

Just as Sophie is plotting with her friends, her mother, Donna, is

reminiscing with her old pals, Rosie and Tanya, who have also come to the island

for Sophie’s wedding. Donna, Rosie and Tanya were once a pop singing group

called “Donna and the Dynamos.” Donna introduces her friends to Sophie’s

fiancé, Sky, along with Pepper and Eddie, the waiters at Donna’s hotel/bar, the

Taverna. After fifteen years of running the place, Donna is ready for some

success (“MONEY, MONEY, MONEY”).

As Donna and the girls exit, Sam, Harry and Bill arrive at the Taverna and

meet Sophie. Sophie wants to keep the reason for their presence on the island a

secret from Donna (“THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC”). Suddenly Donna comes

in and sees the three men. All of her old feelings come bubbling to the surface

(“MAMMA MIA”).

MAMMA MIA! Donna can’t hide her emotions from Rosie and Tanya (“CHIQ- UITITA”).

Rosie and Tanya try to comfort Donna, remembering their old days on stage

(“DANCING QUEEN”).

In the meantime, Sophie, too, is in turmoil at the arrival of her “three

Dads.” She needs Sky to comfort her (“LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME”).

While the boys are having Sky’s bachelor party, the girls listen to “Donna

and the Dynamos” sing one of their old tunes (“SUPER TROUPER”). Harry, Bill

and Sam arrive at the party, only to be welcomed into the dance (“GIMME,

GIMME”). Sophie speaks with each of her potential Dads. Bill is very close to

learning the secret (“NAME OF THE GAME”). He promises to give her away at

the wedding the next day.

All the townspeople meet in the courtyard to celebrate Sophie and Sky

(“VOULEZ-VOUS”). Sam takes Sophie aside to say that he would be proud to

be her father. He promises to walk her down the aisle at the wedding. Then Harry

meets her and promises the same thing! Sophie is stunned as the curtain falls.

ACT TWO

As the second act begins, Sophie is having a nightmare (“UNDER

ATTACK”). Upon awakening, Sophie is confronted by Donna who thinks she

wants to cancel the wedding. But Sophie is determined to not repeat what she

sees as her mother’s mistake: raising a child without a father. Donna is left with

her thoughts (“ONE OF US”), until she meets Sam. They reach out to each

other, but are held back by pride (“S.O.S.”).

The guests begin to gather for the wedding. Tanya flirts with Pepper

(“DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW?”).

MAMMA MIA! Sophie finds Sky and confesses that she invited Harry, Bill and Sam, hop-

ing that one of them would be her real father. Sky is upset that she didn’t tell him

the truth. Sam tells Sophie that she shouldn’t get married unless it’s what she

really wants (“KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU”).

In Donna’s room, Donna and Harry reminisce about their past (“OUR

LAST SUMMER’). Sophie comes in, and although there is still tension between

them, she asks Donna to help her dress for the wedding (“SLIPPING THROUGH

MY FINGERS”). Donna admits that her own mother disowned her when she

learned that she was pregnant. They reconcile and Sophie asks her mother if she

will walk her down the aisle. Sam arrives and tries to speak to Donna again, but

she doesn't want to see him, and asks him to leave. He refuses, and a bitter

confrontation ensues. Donna tells Sam that he broke her heart, presumably

when she found out he was engaged (“THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL”). It

emerges that the two still love each other dearly, albeit against Donna's better

judgment.

As Rosie puts the final touches on the wedding arrangements, she asks

Bill if there is a chance for their relationship to grow (“TAKE A CHANCE”).

The wedding begins. Before Sky and Sophie can take their vows, Donna

breaks in, telling everyone that Sophie’s real father is there. Sophie reveals that

she has read Donna’s diary and invited Sam, Harry and Bill. The three men

agree to ALL be Sophie’s dad. Sophie and Sky decide to postpone the wedding

and explore the world together. But before the wedding decorations can be

taken down, Sam asks Donna to marry him (“I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO”). In

the end, Sam and Donna are married, and at the end of the night, Sophie and

Sky depart on a round-the-world tour (“I HAVE A DREAM").

AUDITION GUIDELINES

Auditions will be decided by a panel of people including; the director/choreographer, musical director, and pit orchestra conductor. We encourage you to audition for any and all roles. Our greatest wish is that you will be supportive of others who are auditioning and accepting of the decisions made. Auditions are not based on seniority or over-all involvement in the choral program. Remember, this is an ALL SCHOOL musical, and anyone in the school is encouraged to participate. Our goal is to put the right people in the right place so that we can put on the best show possible. The initial audition process consists of singing and acting. You should sign up on the choral showcase outside of room 181 in groups of 8 for a 30 minute time slot on either Monday, November 12th or Tuesday, November 13th. The first round will conclude on Wednesday, November 14th with a dance audition. The dance call will consist of a jazz combination. Please be prepared with jazz shoes, if you have them, or a closed toe shoe that you can move in easily. Callbacks will be held Thursday, November 15th. If necessary, callbacks will continue on Friday, November 16th, so please keep this date free. Callbacks will consist of both acting and singing. All who are auditioning should be prepared to attend both portions of the initial audition process. Callbacks will require you to read sides from the show itself. The call back material will be available in the google drive. Therefore you should be familiar with every character that you might be eligible for. Following Thursday’s callback, another round of cuts might possibly be made. Please be sure to check outside room 181 on Friday morning to see if there is any new information. ***Please note-if you are not called back, IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE NOT CAST IN THE SHOW. The panel may have seen what they needed.

During your time slot on Monday or Tuesday you will perform one of the vocal cuts from the show that has been provided AND perform a monologue from the monologue sheet provided. Vocal cuts and monologues will be available in a google drive folder. Your goal should be to tell a story through your song and MAKE STRONG CHOICES in both your song and monologue. SHOW US WHAT YOU HAVE.

***Please note that we are asking you to bring a wallet sized recent school picture or snapshot. Attach it to the Information Sheet found on the last page of this packet.

***The musical selection must be memorized. The monologue does not need to be memorized.

MAMMA MIA! ***It is strongly advised that you be familiar with the songs from the show. Please note

your professionalism and preparedness will be noticed by the audition panel.

PREPARATION: In preparing for your audition it helps if you are familiar with the show you are auditioning for. Researching the show by reading the script and/or listening to a recording can often help you get a better feel for preparing audition material. As soon as a script is available, you are welcome to read it during your study hall or at another appropriate time. AUDITIONING:

• Arrive at least 15 minutes before the audition. This allows you time to relax before the process begins.

• Dress appropriately! Auditions are a professional engagement and you should dress for success. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the dance audition.

• Auditioning also includes your attitude and your ability to be a team player. Always be supportive of all who are involved in the audition process.

• Sell it with confidence! Be confident, speak clearly and loudly. Your initial impression is very important. Do not apologize or make excuses.

• Be prepared to introduce yourself and your piece. • Don’t let one mistake ruin your entire audition opportunity. RECOVER!!! Impress us with

your composure. Most importantly BE TRUTHFUL to the material. Be proud of the product you have presented. Know that you are well prepared and put your best effort forth. Whether or not you are called back, whether or not you are cast in the show - keep trying. If you do not fit a specific role in this show you may be just perfect for the next one.

Mamma Mia Monologues

Donna: I’m dreaming, aren’t I? You aren’t really here? You keep your hands to yourself. What the hell are you doing here Sam? What are any of you doing here? I’m sorry. I’m just-amazed to see you all. Oh, dear - what a shame - we don’t have any rooms. It’s that time of year…and one of the local girls is getting married tomorrow, and I just don’t have the staff to cope with you - you’d be so much more comfortable on the mainland. Well, I’d love to stop and chew over old times, but I have to go and…clean out my purse.

Sophie: Oh, you can’t see her! You’re a secret! I sent the invitations - mom doesn’t know…Mom’s always talking about her friend’s from the old days…And I thought she’d be thrilled if I invited you all. But she’s got herself in such a state about this wedding - mention unexpected guests and she’ll hyper-ventilate. So pretend you’re here for a holiday. She’ll get a lovely surprise when she sees you at my wedding and we can let her in on the secret.

Sophie: No, that’s what you think - isn’t it? - I’m stupid to get married, it’s just a whim? You did just fine without a man, didn’t you- you never did that marriage and babies thing. You just did the baby. I’m going to do it right, Mom. I love Sky and I want to be with him and I don’t want my children growing up not knowing who their Father is because it’s crap.

Sky: Is this what the big white wedding’s for? A set-up so you can find your Dad? I wanted to take a boat to the mainland and just get married with a couple of witnesses, but you insisted on this fantasy wedding so you could play “Happy Families” - Knowing who you are doesn’t come from knowing who your Dad is Sophie. That comes from you. How would you feel if I lied to you? I was marrying you because I loved you and I thought it was what you wanted. But I just don’t know anymore.

Sam: Sorry to interrupt “Indiana” - but the point is this is my Taverna…I built it! Well, I designed it. Drew up the plans - what?-twenty-one years ago…? I can’t believe she’s actually gone and built the damn thing. This is something I scribbled on the back of a menu, I had no idea. Buildings are like babies. You always know your own.

Bill: I wouldn’t know about babies. I’ve been living out of a back-pack all my life. When I got the wedding invite I sold my editor a piece on “Childhood Haunts Revisited.” I was born in the US - but my mother’s Greek. The only time I came to Greece was to visit my Great - Aunt on the mainland - and that was 21 years ago. I think this island should remain the secret idyll I’ve always remembered.

Harry: I’m glad to get off that boat. I read your book “A Bloke and a Boat in Botswana’. Travel books are my passion. A distraction from the daily rigors of the London rush hour. I have to say, I am rather impressed. I remember an old hut here - I was dreading bedding down with the goats.
